1 Department of Health and Exercise Science Sports Medicine Concentration Student Name Career Planning: This concentration provides a pre-professional degree only and does not prepare the student to enter the job market with a bachelor s degree. The program prepares the student for graduate studies in allied health areas and a variety of medical professions. With this intent, students should maintain a minimum GPA of.0 in order to meet the minimum prerequisites of many graduate study requirements. Many professional programs require courses additional to Health and Exercise Science degree requirements. Curriculum: The sequence of classes listed allows for meeting all prerequisites for upper level classes and the All University Core Requirements (AUCC). The AUCC courses can be found at Since these approved courses are revised periodically, it is the student s responsibility to check the DARS program or CSU General Catalog to be sure their course selection for the AUCC is current during the semester they register for these classes. Students enrolling in classes out of sequence will likely face delays in their graduation. While Faculty and Department Advisors are available to assist you in your class scheduling, it is your responsibility to follow all requirements on this check-sheet and in the University Catalog. Students transferring into this concentration will likely face delays in graduation in order to meet all prerequisites. Many courses are NOT offered during the summer session. Advising: All freshmen and sophomores are assigned an Academic Support Coordinator Office location is Rm. 26, Moby. Juniors and seniors are advised by designated academic faculty. Every faculty member is available throughout the year to assist students with career and academic issues. Faculty have office hours posted on their office door. It is important for students to periodically review the Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS) program in the Records section on your RamWeb (click on My Undergraduate degree plan ) to make sure you are on track with graduation requirements. It is the student s responsibility to complete all requirements on this check-sheet and in the University Catalog. Graduate School Advising: Students interested in continuing education in medicine, physical therapy, physician s assistant, nursing, and other health professions must see a Health Professions Advisor. Health Professions Advisors are located in the Center for Advising and Student Achievement (CASA), st Floor of the TILT Building, , Additional important course information: MATH 7, MATH 8, MATH 2 and MATH 25 are all required math requirements for the Sports Medicine Concentration. Advanced math courses that have the required math credits as prerequisites (e.g. MATH 55, MATH 60) can be substituted. MATH 0, cannot be substituted! See an advisor if you have a question about your math requirements. A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required in the following courses, with no grade lower than C; HES 5, HES 207 & BMS 00. This requirement is included as a prerequisite for HES 79 Psychology and Sport. Students requiring organic chemistry I & II may substitute CHEM,, for CHEM 25, 26. You must complete the three course series in order to substitute. When selecting your statistics course, advanced writing course (AUCC 2B), and deciding what science electives to choose, talk to your Health Professions Advisor to help determine what the best choice for your graduate program is: Use your electives wisely! You may want to delay taking electives until you have decided what graduate program you will be applying to. rev. 6/20

The attached list of graduate school prerequisites should serve as a guide for this selection process but individual programs can vary. Most of the electives have prerequisites, so plan accordingly. Also, many students will find that they need more than two courses from this list in order to obtain all the necessary prerequisites for their graduate program. LIFE 0 and PH 22 are the most common prerequisites for graduate school, thus if unsure of what graduate program you are going to pursue, these would be good options. The Science elective course list is fully inclusive, thus there will be no substitutions. rev. 6/20

Generally, the total general elective credits will be from 9. The bottom-line is that you need a total of 20 credits in order to graduate. It is YOUR responsibility to ensure you have not only met the course requirements for the major but also have acquired enough electives to reach 20 credits. Remember to periodically review the Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS) to make sure you are on track for graduation. DARS can be found in your RamWeb Records section - click on My undergraduate degree plan. It is recommended that you see a Department Advisor before registering for classes. You should also check your credits with an Advisor the semester before your anticipated graduation. rev. 6/20
