5 Paths to earning a degree Program 3 years at a liberal arts college followed by 2 years at a school that offers engineering Student earns 2 bachelor s degrees Program Over a 5 year period, a student earns a bachelor s degree and a master s degree at the same institution Increasingly popular Co-Op Program An internship program that enables students to get career training with pay, typically for a full semester Usually extends a student s undergraduate time by a semester or a year Articulation Agreement A formal partnership between academic institutions that allows a student to begin studying math and science at a liberal arts or community college and complete the engineering degree at another institution.

9 Health Science Majors Some careers have obvious majors associated with it: Nursing, Nutritionist, Dietician Many careers, though, have a less obvious path. Pre-med, Pre-pharmacy, Pre-physical therapy, Pre-dentistry, Pre-physician s assistant Majors may include biology, organic chemistry, physics, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, psychology, public health, kinesiology...and more Some health science majors appeal to other skills; not all are practitioner-based: Cytotechnology Health Information Management Nuclear Medicine Technology Magnetic Resonance Imaging Radiation Therapy Medical Laboratory Science Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Exercise Science and Wellness Community Health Health Care Innovation Music Therapy

11 Direct Admission or Direct Entry Many Health Science programs have competitive admission. Nursing, Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy degree programs, for example, accept about 10% of applicants. When looking at colleges, investigate if the school offers direct admission to the program. Direct admission means that when you apply to the school, you immediately gain admission to the college or program into which you want to enroll. You do not have to fulfill general education requirements in your first year before you can apply to the college or major of your choice.

13 Some careers require an Associate Degree An Associate Degree generally takes two years to complete. Many Community Colleges offer two-year Associate Degrees in Nursing. Upon completion, one can enter the workforce or transfer to a four-year college to complete a Bachelor s Degree in Nursing. Community Colleges offer other Associate Degrees such as: Medical Laboratory Technician Medical Assistant or Dental Assistant Paramedic Some four-year schools also offer Associate Degrees in healthcare fields: Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy Assistant Opthalmic Technician Radiography

14 Some careers require an Advanced Degree To become a Physician, one must graduate from a medical school. It can take 10+ years after high school to become a physician. Other programs require a Master s degree or a PhD before entering the workforce. These include: Physical Therapy Occupational Therapy Nurse Practitioner Physician s Assistant Athletic Training
