Washingtn State University advises us t fcus n external cmpensatin. They pay faculty t develp curses. See it as an alternative revenue surce. Faculty at WSU sees this nt as their jb but in additin t. We need them t understand the value. Its nt an extensin anymre, it is just part f their jb. Oregn State uses a revenue sharing mdel. It s the primary reasn faculty pt in. It s lucrative. In a strapped state institutin, prgrams generating revenue directly t cllege is very attractive. Sme faculty members are champins. They try it and then say I m ging t incrprate this stuff even int class- based experience. This is a real incentive fr faculty members. 80 percent f tuitin frm the prcess ges back t the cllege. This mney can be send t fund GA s, travel budgets fr cnferences, etc. Design Washingtn State has develped standards. Identified best practices fr WSU faculty and expectatins. At the end f the day the respnsibility is n the faculty, WSU desn t aren t want t put peple int a bx. Oregn State has an Instructinal Designer assigned t every faculty. It s a partnership in the design. The gal is t try t meet faculty members where they are at (sme will give it their all, sme it is nt as easy). The emphasis here is n the partnership. The administratin desn t just tell them t d it alne. Wh Decides What is Taught Online? At Oregn State University it is the academic units. We culd have all the market research in the wrld, if the cllege desn t want t put it nline we dn t. They have t want t wrk with us. OSU extended campus supprts university missin. Clleges missin is aligned with nline missin. It is the department s curse. Belngs with the academic unit. ON a diplma it desn t say yu tk it nline. This is an OSU curse and yu have an OSU degree. Yu have t get t thse learning utcmes, just lks different. Freedm f the department and faculty t cme up with all srts f ideas. Organizatinal structure is under VC fr Academic Affairs, they have a separate unit that technically supprts the tls. Learning Analytics UIS uses starfish within blackbard. Gather data n student use beynd what nrmal blackbard wuld prvide yu with. Adaptive learning engines are really an imprtant piece f the future f Higher Educatin. Mve students frward nly ne student has mastered material. Pre nline learning assessment UIS des nt use ne, thers are. Penn State uses ne. Ones available that aren t very expensive. Average age. The average f students participating in nline learning at Oregn State is 33. Mre than 50 percent are campus- based students. This makes up abut 1/3 rd f his budget. OSU is 75 dllar per credit hur. Where are yu seeing future directins fr yur institutins? Open educatinal resurces. OSU divisin Outreach and Engagement. Many Americans cannt easily affrd higher educatin. Peple questin if we will nly be serving upper class students. Online learning allws fr us t maintain upper divisin attentin, quality. MOOKS: Ggle has ffered its first MOOK. Apple has just pened up itunes U t everyne. Ray explains, Imagine if yu will Ggle becming an nline university. With all f the resurces they have. Imagine them receiving reginal accreditatin. Apple is the same. I mentin thse fr yu t think abut the fact that we are nt in a unique space. Ask the reprters wh have lst their jbs. This isn t that far ut. Old Dminin University is explring a partnership with Cisc fr their tw- way netwrk. They als have a successful Tw plus Tw system, where students take tw years at a cmmunity cllege and tw years at ODU. This is a site- based envirnment. Lwer divisin curses taken at Cmmunity Cllege, upper divisin classes taken at ODU. Student Supprt Services Oregn State University has tried t replicated the services we see n campus (Cunseling, Advising, Disability Services, etc.) What we have tried t d at OSU is replicate the services that they ffer n campus. Nt all the way there but getting there. They recently hired an nline career advisr. It can ften be difficult fr adult learners because they can t get t career fair. T meet this challenge OSU is putting career fairs nline by Skyping the businesses in. The gal is t give nline learners a campus- based experience. Campus- based advisrs have t serve their students first, nline students are waiting frever. We are spending a lt fr these students t apply, need smene t answer their questins. Every degree prgram has an advisr that is funded. Debriefing After Panel Is there a specific nline librarian? D they just g t the library r is there a special elearning librarian. Schls that had instructinal designers, verarching structure that crdinates all the nline learning. They had an pen dr. They culd help yu create the cntent if yu were having truble. But if yu dn t have that structure, its ging t fall n the faculty members if they are having truble creating a vide, where d they g? Training materials fr faculty develpment. Sme use nline curses, interesting idea because it puts faculty thrugh the experience. IU has a lt f theirs nline.

Peple wh want t teach nline start tw semesters ahead. Chrt experience assignment includes designing yur wn curse. Online educatin is a huge paradigm shift. Revenue sharing ges back t cllege, ges back t department. Revenue sharing is central t the buy- in questin. We need faculty t see that this mney will be cming back t them. Cncentrate n prgrams, rather than curses. If yu just have a few curses here and there des it really make students want t take a lt f curses? We need t give them a whle prgram. This will bring in mre revenue. WSU bringing in the entire campus experience dn t just g there fr the classes. Things like research webinars, and live streaming cultural events prvide them with the campus experience. Crdinated these ideas arund the nline gal. We have the pieces arund the university we just need t bring them in t this. Everyne uses blackbard. Als have revenue streams frm their fees, individual departments fund their platfrms (webcams, etc). Then leverage ther services that the university has. We want t be nimble and dynamic. Dn t want t tie urselves dwn t smething. If we chse t speak t ther flks speak t them abut learning analytics didn t really speak t this much. Expand mre regarding pedaggy think abut rich learning experiences. Decentralized versus Centralized: Might be useful t think abut which f these mdels is mst useful t us in the immediate and in the lng run. Perhaps an evlutinary way frm ne rganizatinal structure t anther? This visin shuld be ur ideal. It s a stretch gal where d we want t be? The dream. Will faculty be wrried that they need t be experts in delivering and creating nline cntent? What is this ging t d fr residential, traditinal students? Offers alternative ptins, summer, j- term ptins. Different types f experiences speak t residential students. Residential shuld mean cmmunal. They aren t actually n campus, but they have the shared Miami Experience (think abut study abrad). Can yu retain an academic cnnectin, t where they are lifelng learners thrugh Miami? Greatest thing abut Miami is that they had this great prfessr, it was a very persnal experience. That is a critical part f the Miami experience. We want t replicate that. Extending, Changing the experience? Enriching the experience. What language? Cmmittee shuld talk t new Miami Plan Task frce. Ray Schreder Assciate Vice Chancellr fr Online Learning University f Illinis- Springfield Ray is als Prfessr Emeritus f Cmmunicatin with three dzen years f teaching experience n the Urbana and Springfield campuses. He has taught mre than 30 nline class fferings. As Directr f the Center fr Online Learning, Research and Service, Ray is dedicated t faculty develpment and pedaggical supprt f the nline initiative. He has published the ppular Online Learning Update blg daily fr the past half dzen years. Ray is a Slan Cnsrtium Distinguished Schlar in Online Learning 2002-2003, Visiting Schlar in Online Learning at the University f Suthern Maine 2006-2008, and the recipient f the 2002 Slan- C award fr the Mst Outstanding Achievement in ALN by an Individual. Mst recently, Ray received the Slan Cnsrtium s highest individual award the inaugural 2010 Frank Mayadas Leadership in Online Learning award. He is a charter Slan Cnsrtium Fellw. Lisa Templetn Executive Directr Oregn State University Extended Campus Lisa prvides daily peratinal leadership and management fr Extended Campus staff and prgrams, including Ecampus nline curses and degrees and OSU Summer Sessin. As the Executive Directr f Oregn State s (Ecampus) since 2008, Templetn versees a prgram that has develped and delivered mre than 800 credit nline curses in ver 80 subjects and this year has had mre than 11,000 learners enrlled in nline curses frm every state and 30 freign cuntries. Ecampus is part f OSU s Divisin f Outreach and Engagement. The University Prfessinal & Cntinuing Educatin Assciatin (UPCEA), the leading rganizatin fr universities engaged in prfessinal, cntinuing, and nline educatin, has recently selected Lisa t be the Chair f the UPCEA Prgram Management & Innvatin Netwrk.
