1. WHO Photo Library Intranet: login You can access this web site if your are a WHO staff. Please enter your Synergy account, login and password to the homepage. http: //intranet.who.int/tools/photolibrary/ You can browse, select or download pictures. IMPORTANT: to go back to the welcome page of the Photo Library, click on the WHO logo: the back button of your browser doesn t work! 1
2. Search Three search modes are available on the site: 1/ Quick search This is the equivalent of a full text search. Enter a term in the search box, and the system will browse all the fields where you entry term appears. 2/ Advanced search The advanced search allows you to search for photos which meet several criteria. If you click on the down arrow to the right of each field, you will see a list of terms which can be used for searching. 3/ Search through Highlights The Highlights provide another way of viewing images using selected criteria. By clicking on the crosses located next to a topic, you will reveal a list of sub-topics. If you click directly on the term (not on the crosses) you will display all documents under the category. 2
3. Tips for the research Boolean search It is possible to refine or to broaden your search, using operators such as AND, OR and NOT. If you type several words with no operators, the search considers that the operator is AND by default. Ex: hospital patient : will display a photo of a patient in a hospital. hospital OR patient : will display all photos of hospitals, and all photos with patients. hospital NOT patient : will display photos of hospitals without patients. Wildcard search This sign * is the wildcard character. It replaces any sign and any number of signs as well. It can be helpful when you are not sure of the spelling of a term. Ex: - *lderly (beginning of the keyword) - dis*se (middle of the keyword) - handwash* (at the end of the keyword) Exact phrases You can search exact phrases by using (quotation marks). Ex: blood sample 3
4. Results display When you process a search, the number of photos found appears above the display frame and to the right of the search window. To go from one result page to another, you can either use the navigation buttons (arrows) or the scroll bar at the far right of the page. Ex. For poverty area : 1/ Display modes The results of your search will be displayed either in the thumbnail or in the list mode Thumbnails mode By default, the results are displayed in the thumbnail mode List mode All the thumbnails results are showed with the metadata listed, and the different download options Large view To see a big zoom of the photo 4
2/ Display views Each selected photo can be displayed in two ways: Details view By default, the results are displayed in the thumbnail mode Zoom view You see an enlarged view of your selected picture You can change the display mode at any time without losing your search. In whichever mode you use, the navigation buttons will remain visible. 3/ Sort by You can choose the way images are sorted. Select from the scrolling menu Sort by 5

Basket management (selection of images) To select and keep your photo search results, use the Add to basket option. 1/ To create your basket In the thumbnail or details modes, select the pictures you wish to include in the basket, by ticking the box under each thumbnail image. Then, click on the add to basket button at the bottom of the page. A pop-up window will ask you to select an existing basket (list) or create a new one (type a new name). You can create several baskets according to your different subjects. 6
2/ To retrieve and to manage your basket To display a basket To display an existing basket, go to Your account and click on either the basket thumbnail or the basket title. Images will appear in the same order as they were added to the basket. To retrieve To retrieve the contents of your basket, go to Your account on the top right side of the page. There, you can see and manage all your saved baskets. 3/ To add pictures to your basket If you wish to add pictures to an already existing basket, just follow the basket creation procedure. A pop-up window will ask you to select an existing basket or create a new one. Select the name of the appropriate basket and click on save. 7
4/ To remove pictures from the basket / to remove basket / to rename basket If you wish to remove pictures from a basket, click on Your account. To the right side of the basket, click on the + sign. A pop-up window called basket management, will open. From there, you can delete the pictures you don t need any more, by clicking on the cross below the thumbnails. To remove all the pictures of your basket at once, click on Empty basket. Delete your basket, clicking on Delete basket. 5/ To download or to print selected images Once you have displayed your basket just click on the box below the thumbnails and on Download photos or on Print at the bottom of the page. Finally, click either on Download photos or Print at the bottom of the page. Don t forget to choose the resolution you need. To do this, please scroll down and select the option you want. Then, click on Download photos, found at the bottom of the page: IMPORTANT: if you need to print on paper, choose high resolution. If you need to use in a powerpoint or on the web, use the lowest resolution. A pop-up window will appear where you will have to save a zip file. This file contains the pictures file (*.jpg) and a text file with metadatas (*.txt). 8 Any questions, please contact : photolibrary@who.int.
