SunGard Banner Documentation This web page will help you to access the Banner documentation from your desktop or from within the Banner program. If you need assistance with any part of this process, please call the Helpdesk at (248)370-HELP, or send email to helpdesk@oakland.edu. Installing Banner Documentation: There are two ways that are suggested for installation of the SunGard Banner documentation on your desktop. They are outlined below. Please select which method you would like to follow. Shortcut Create a shortcut to the Banner documentation bookshelf You can create a shortcut on your desktop so you can read the Banner documentation without having to open Banner. If you want to perform indexbased searches of the Banner documentation, you must access it using a desktop shortcut. Web browser If you have Banner Forms open, there is a link to the Banner documentation on the right-hand side of the main menu, and this will open the documentation in your web browser. If you wish to open the documentation now, select the following link: Banner Bookshelf If you are going to print documentation while reading the documents from your web browser, please refer to the note below about printing documentation from the web. Printing documentation from the web If you are going to print any of the documentation, be sure to use the print button on the Adobe toolbar, not the print function of your browser. An sample screen shot is displayed below:

Create a shortcut to the Banner Documentation bookshelf Creating a shortcut to the Banner documentation will provide an easy way for you to access the Banner Bookshelf, even if you do not have Banner installed on your system. It also avoids some of the problems that users have sometimes experienced when trying to read the documentation from a web browser.

These instructions assume that a version of the Adobe Acrobat Reader software has already been installed on your system. If the Acrobat Reader is not installed on your system, you can download it from Adobe Systems. If you need assistance with the installation, please contact the Help Desk: by phone at (248)370-HELP, or by email at helpdesk@oakland.edu. To create the shortcut, perform the following steps: 1. Right-click anywhere on your desktop. You should then see a menu that looks like this: 2. Click New. You will then see another menu like the one shown below. Click Shortcut.

3. A Create Shortcut dialog will display. Type \\web02\banner\banbkshlf.pdf into the Command line box. Then click Next>.

4. You can then select the title of your shortcut. This is the text that will appear on your desktop under the icon. Type whatever will be meaningful to you here. When you have typed it, click Finish.

5. You will now see an Acrobat icon (like the one shown below) on your desktop. Doubleclick this anytime you want to read the documentation. If you need help with this procedure, the UTS Help Desk can assist you. Contact them by phone at (248)370-HELP, or by email at helpdesk@oakland.edu. Index-based searches of the Banner documentation The documentation in the Banner Bookshelf comes with indexes for faster searching through all of the manuals. To use these indexes, you will first need to set up your Adobe Reader program to know where the indexes are. This document assumes that you are using Adobe Reader 7.0 or higher. If you are using an older version, you can browse to www.adobe.com to get the latest version. 1. Before you can do index-based searches, you must access the Banner documentation using a shortcut on your desktop; index-based searches are not available when viewing the documentation in a web browser. Refer to the document on creating a Banner documentation shortcut for instructions on how to do that. 2. Use your documentation shortcut to access the Banner Bookshelf. You will see the following screen:

3. Click the Search button on the toolbar. This will open a search panel on the right side of your screen, as shown:

4. Click the "Use Advanced Search Options" link on the bottom of the search panel. The screen will change, as shown:

5. Click on the drop-down list labelled "Look in:" and select "Select Index...". This will open a window for index selection. Click the "Add" button.

6. In the "File Name" box, type \\mirage\banner\bandoc7x\index7x and click the "Open" button. Several index files (*.pdx) will be displayed. You will need to double-click each one individually to add it to your list of indexes. 7. Repeat the previous step until all of the index files are added. When you have added all of the index files, click OK.

8. You can now enter your search term in the "Search Term" text box, select any other search options you would like to use, and click "Search" to begin the search.

9. The results will be displayed in the "Results" window. You can select the document(s) you want from that window.

If you need help with this procedure, the UTS Help Desk can assist you. Contact them by phone at (248)370-HELP, or by email at helpdesk@oakland.edu. Author: Anthony Becker Document created: 29 February 2000 Document last modified: 12 October 2009
