Introduction Congratulations on receiving a new ipad! This booklet, Getting Started with the ipad, will help you to learn more about this exciting product. The information within this document has been created for users who plan to set up their ipads with a Mac computer. As you read through this document, you will learn that the ipad is a great tool to use in an educational environment like Kennesaw State University. Learning Objectives The learning objectives in this document include: Understanding how to update itunes. Learning how to create an account in itunes. Knowing how to set up the ipad. Having the ability to turn the ipad on and off. Having the ability to open and close an application. Understanding how to connect to the Internet using WiFi. Knowing how to renew a WiFi lease. Having the ability to use Safari to browse the Internet. 4

1. Setting Up the ipad Figure 2 contains all of the items that you will need to set up your new ipad on your Mac. ipad Requirements Hardware Requirements A Mac Computer Internet access Software Requirements Mac OS X version 10.5.8 or later itunes 9.1 or later Figure 2 ipad Requirements for the Mac The following steps explain how to set up the ipad: 1.1 Step One: Update itunes Your Mac computer already has the itunes software installed on the system. However, the version must be 9.1 or later to be compatible with the ipad. The following instructions explain how to update itunes on your computer: 1. Click the itunes icon on your dock to open the software. Figure 3 itunes Icon 2. From the menu options in the upper-left area of the screen, click itunes. 3. Then, click Check for Updates. 4. If your computer has the latest version of itunes, you will receive the following message: This version of itunes is the current version. You may proceed to the next section, Creating an Account in itunes on page 7. If the Software Update window appears, then your computer needs an updated version of itunes. In this window, you will see a list of software; select the option itunes in this list. Then, click the button labeled Install 1 Item. 5. Next, the Password window will appear. Enter your User Name and Password and click the OK button. 6. The License Agreement will appear. Read the agreement and click the Agree button. 7. A window will appear indicating that itunes is being updated on your computer. If you receive a message on your screen requesting that you close itunes, simply click the Continue button. 6

1.2 Step 2: Creating an Account for itunes Within the itunes store, there are many applications that you can download. Some of these items can be downloaded for a set price, while others can be downloaded for free. When setting up an itunes account without a credit card, you must purchase a free application. The following instructions explain how to create an itunes account without a credit card: 1. On the left-side of the itunes window, click itunes Store (see Figure 4). 2. Then, in the upper-middle area of the itunes window, click App Store (see Figure 4). Figure 4 itunes 7

3. The App Store will now appear in your itunes window. As you scroll up-and-down in this window, notice the different categories on the right-side of the window. One category is named Free Apps. Click the option See All next to the Free Apps heading. Figure 5 itunes App Store 4. Find an application that you would like to purchase for free and click the Free button for the app (see Figure 6). 5. The Sign-In window will appear on your screen. Click the Create New Account button. Figure 7 itunes Sign-In Window 6. In the itunes window, you will see the Welcome screen. Click the Continue button. Figure 8 Welcome to the itunes Store Window 9

7. The Terms and Conditions will appear next in the itunes window. Read the Terms of Service, select the box indicating that you agree with the terms, and click the Continue button. Figure 9 itunes Store Terms and Conditions 8. In the next screen that appears, enter the requested Account information and click the Continue button. Figure 10 itunes Store Account 10

9. Next, for Credit Card, select None (see Figure 11). Then, enter the requested Billing Address information, and finally, click the Continue button. Figure 11 Payment Method 11

10. You will see the Congratulations screen indicating that your account has successfully been created. Here, click the Done button. Figure 12 Congratulations Screen 1.3 Step Three: Connect the ipad to Your Mac After you have updated itunes on your Mac and have created an itunes account, you are ready to set up the ipad. The following instructions explain how to set up your ipad: 1. Open itunes on your Mac. 2. Connect your ipad (see Figure 13) to a USB 2.0 port on your Mac using the cord that came with the ipad. Hint: If the cord is connected to the power adapter, simply remove the cord from the power adapter. Then, you can plug the cord into your computer. 3. On your Mac screen, in the itunes window, you will see the Welcome screen. Click the Continue button. Figure 14 Welcome to Your New ipad Screen 4. In the next screen that appears, enter your Apple ID and Password. Then, click the Continue button. Figure 15 itunes Account 13

5. The Register Your ipad screen will appear next. Complete the form and click the Submit button in the lower-right area of the window. 6. Next, you will see a message in the top-middle area of the window with the following message: ipad sync is complete - OK to disconnect. You can now disconnect your ipad from the Mac. 2. Turning the ipad On and Off The following instructions explain how to turn the ipad on and off: To turn the ipad on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears. After a moment, the ipad will turn on. If a white arrow appears on the screen, place your finger over the arrow so that your finger touches the screen and drag the arrow to the right (remember that this is a touch screen). Sliding this arrow to the right with your finger will unlock the screen. To turn the ipad off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for several seconds until a red arrow appears on the screen. 3. Opening and Closing an Application The following instructions explain how to open and close an application with the ipad: 1. To open the Calendar application, touch the Calendar icon once with your finger (many of the applications will not work until you complete the steps in the next section of this document explaining how to access the Internet however, the Calendar application is not dependent upon Internet access and will currently work for you). 4. Connecting to the Internet (using WiFi) The following instructions explain how to connect to the KSU network which will allow your ipad to have access to the Internet on campus: 1. 5. Renewing Your WiFi Lease Moving from building-to-building can cause disruption in your WiFI connection. In most cases, your WiFi will reconnect successfully. However, if this attempt is not successful, the following steps will get you connected quickly: 1. From the Home screen, touch the Settings icon. Settings icon 2. Touch the WiFi button. Using Safari to Browse the Internet The following instructions explain how to use Safari to browse the Internet: 1. To open Safari, touch the Safari icon. Safari icon Figure 34 Safari Icon 23

4. A keyboard will appear. Type the address for the website that you want to visit (example: www.kennesaw.edu) by touching the various keys and press the Go button on the keyboard. Figure 37 Keyboard for Safari 5. You will be transferred to the new website. To close Safari and return to the Home screen, press the Home button on the ipad. 7. The ipad Battery The status of the battery on your ipad can be found in the upper-right corner of the ipad screen (see Figure 35). To re-charge the battery, connect the device to an AC outlet or a Mac computer using the cord that was provided. PC users may find that their PCs will not charge the ipad because the system requires more power than most USB ports typically produce. Battery Status Figure 39 Battery Status 8. Cleaning the ipad A microfiber cloth can be used to clean the ipad. Allow the cloth to be slightly damp (make sure that the water is not dripping from the cloth) and gently allow the cloth to glide across the screen until all of the smudges are gone. When done, you can remove any remaining water on the ipad with a dry cloth. Remember the following when cleaning the ipad: It is important to only use a damp cloth to clean the ipad do not use any type of cleaner! Turn off your ipad before you clean the device. Be sure to disconnect any wires attached to the ipad. 26
