MBA is a company specialising in the creation, implementation, delivery, management, assessment and audit of competence assurance systems. MBA currently has a permanent team of 25 staff, supported by a specialist subject team of 12 consultants, all of whom have extensive experience in the oil and gas industry. MBA personnel work in a number of international locations, both offshore and onshore. This real work experience enables the team to be more responsive to the practical requirements of MBA clients. Managing CMS Systems Industry Standards Setting Body OPITO approved competence management systems are recognised by the oil and gas industry as being responsible for ensuring Best in Class competence assurance systems. MBA has currently developed the competence standards, along with associated processes and procedures for more than 70% of the existing OPITO approved CMS systems, and MBA continues to support and manage more than 80% of OPITO approved Competence Management Systems on behalf of a number of global organisations within the oil and gas industry. Developing Assessment Materials Besides developing competence standards, MBA produces support materials, along with guidance information, to ensure a simple, effective and systematic approach to assessment. This step is of particular importance and MBA use their extensive experience in the practical implementation of competence assurance systems worldwide to develop assessment materials which are user-friendly, simple to apply and whose application is easily understood. Training Assessors As an organisation, MBA are industry approved by OPITO (oil and gas industry standards setting body) and ECITB (Engineering Construction Industry Training Board) to deliver industry required Assessor and Internal Verifier training. Over the past 12 years MBA personnel have trained and assessed more than 5,000 individuals in the oil and gas industry, to operate as Assessors or Internal Verifiers in many locations, including UK, Middle East, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, various African countries, USA, and Far East. In doing so, MBA have used a number of different assessment methodologies and systems and gained considerable expertise in adapting and responding to the needs of different systems, while continuing to maintain the required industry standard of assessment quality assurance. Conducting CMS Audits Also enhancing the MBA team s skills and experience base, is the experience gained by members of the team in conducting audits of competence assurance systems globally, representing industry regulatory bodies (including OPITO), and on behalf of oil and gas industry operating companies. MBA has 6 members of staff who are qualified Lead Auditors. All of the competence assurance systems MBA operates and manages around the world are subject to regular external audit. MBA is approved by various awarding bodies to offer a range of Competence Based Qualifications, as well as academic management qualifications. As such, MBA is regularly audited by all the external regulatory authorities. This has enabled MBA staff to gain a unique perspective when conducting competence management system audits. We are able to see things from both sides. The approach normally applied by MBA competence assurance system auditors, is based on an open, friendly approach to the audit process, thereby gaining people s co-operation. This cooperation, combined with the fact that MBA auditors know exactly what they are looking at, enables them to find the unexpected and identify things which don t actually work, even when the procedures and systems indicate that they should. It is MBA s approach that auditing is not just about finding out what is wrong with a competence system: practical experience allows the auditor to see what is right about the system and, perhaps, what can be done to make it more effective for all system users. It is MBA s policy that auditors ensure training provision should not merely comply with contractual obligations but, wherever possible, reflect industry best practice. For example, is the existing training course the best the industry provides, or is it merely the easiest or cheapest? Where there is a disparity, MBA will indicate this in the audit findings report, along with a recommended course of action for the future. 2 P a g e
