13 Oil & Gas Industry More than 120,000 skilled personnel will be needed over the next decade to fully realise the planned surge in investment in the North Sea oil and gas industry -as well as exploit new shale oil discoveries in the UK. Britain is the third largest producer of natural gas in the European Union. Natural gas production has been declining since The UK continental shelf, located in the North Sea off the eastern coast of the United Kingdom, is the major source of natural gas supplies. Maturing fields and falling natural gas production have led to a change in the industry s structure.
