3 Electrical Maintenance Level 3 Technician Status Occupation OVERVIEW Electrical maintenance technicians are responsible for the assembly, installation, maintenance and testing of a wide range of electrical plant and associated components. Typical equipment includes power generation and distribution systems, switch panels, transformers, motors and generators. Electrical technicians are expected to be able to diagnose the causes of electrical or electromechanical malfunctions or failures of operational equipment in a prompt and efficient manner. They must be able to interpret maintenance specifications, engineering drawings and wiring diagrams to achieve many of their day to day objectives. OCCUPATIONAL HIERARCHY The electrical maintenance technician works at technician level and is overseen by a supervisor. Assistants and mates work in a semi-skilled role alongside electrical maintenance technician on more complex or manpower intensive jobs and the will regularly work alongside or in conjunction with electrical fitters. MAIN OBJECTIVES Position and install electrical plant and equipment. Dismantle electrical plant and equipment. Carry out planned maintenance procedures on electrical plant and equipment. Adjust electrical plant and equipment to meet operating requirements. Remove components from electrical plant and equipment. Replace components in electrical plant and equipment. Monitor the performance and condition of electrical plant and equipment. Assess the performance and condition of electrical plant and equipment. Diagnose and determine the causes of faults in electrical plant and equipment. Assemble components of electrical plant and equipment. Repair components of electrical plant and equipment to operational condition. Hand over plant and equipment. Determine the feasibility of repair of components from electrical plant and equipment. Test the performance and condition of electrical plant and equipment. Analyse the test results relating to electrical plant and equipment. Keep others informed about work plans or activities which affect them and seek assistance from others in a polite and courteous way without causing undue disruption to normal work activities. Respond in a timely and positive way when others ask for help or information. Work safely at all times, complying with health and safety and other relevant regulations and guidelines. Call for expert help in the event of contingencies occurring, using warning systems as appropriate. Take prompt and appropriate action to minimise risk of personal and third party injury as a first priority and then damage to property and equipment. Follow shutdown and evacuation procedures promptly and correctly. Deal safely with dangers that can be contained using appropriate appropriate equipment and materials, in accordance with organisational policy and procedures. Work safely at all times, complying with health and safety and other relevant regulations and guidelines. Recognise industrial processes, tools, equipment and materials that have the potential to cause harm. Check for hazards in the workplace in line with agreed and approved procedures. Identify any potential hazards and take appropriate action to minimise the risk from them. Report any hazards identified and any actions taken. Install, position and secure the electrical equipment and components in accordance with the specification and checking that the installation is complete and free from damage. Make all isolations and disconnections to equipment in line with approved procedures and carry out any dismantling to the agreed level using correct tools and techniques. Make any required adjustments in the specified sequence and in an agreed timescale and confirm that the adjusted equipment meets the required operating specification. Remove the required components from electrical plant & equipment using approved tools and techniques and check the condition of the removed components recording those that will require replacing. Replace components in the correct sequence using appropriate tools and techniques and make any necessary settings or adjustments to the components to ensure they will function correctly. Correctly set up and check/calibrate any equipment required for the monitoring activity being carried out and carry out the monitoring activities effectively with minimum disruption to normal activities. Carry out the assessment using all relevant data and valid methods, comparing current performances and condition data with that from previous assessments and identifying and reporting the implications arising from those assessments. Complete the fault diagnosis within the agreed time and determine the implications of the fault for other work and for safety considerations. Use the appropriate methods and techniques to assemble the components in their correct positions and securing the components using the specified connectors and securing devices. Carry out the repairs within agreed timescales using approved materials, components, methods and procedures, and ensuring that the repaired component meets the specified operating conditions. 8 TRAINING COURSES There are a range of training courses available that target this occupation available from ECITB Licensed Training Providers. The ECITB have developed training standards, in consultation with the industry, that specify in detail the skills and knowledge required to successfully complete their Ofqual and SQA regulated Diplomas in Maintaining Plant & Systems: Electrical. These training standards define what must be taught by a licensed provider and the related learning outcomes that learners are expected to achieve. The output of a training course developed to meet the standards is a trained but inexperienced individual who will have to gain occupational experience before being ready for either a vocational competency assessment or Technical Test(s). To assist these individuals to consolidate the skills and knowledge gained during training the ECITB have developed optional Work Based Task Assignments that focus on areas where essential skills and knowledge should be developed. CAREER PROGRESSION & FURTHER TRAINING Career progression from this role would be to supervisor level, those moving into or employed in a supervisory role would benefit from the completion of ECITB s Supervisory Management Training & Development (SMTD) course, the National Agreement for the Engineering Construction Industry (NAECI) Industrial Relations Course and the ECITB s Joint Training for Supervisors and Workplace Safety Representatives course.
