Development, Implementation and Assessment of Quality Management Systems The ISO 9001:2008 standard is one of the most widely known standards, implemented by over 800,000 organisations in 162 countries. The ISO 9001 standard has become an international reference for quality management requirements in business-to-business relationships. ISO 9001 helps organisations of any type and size with quality management including: Fulfilling customers quality requirements Following applicable regulatory requirements Enhancing customer satisfaction Achieving continual performance improvement in pursuit of these objectives The standard has earned a worldwide reputation known as the generic quality management system standard, which can be applied to any organisation, large or small, whatever its business, product or service. Management system refers to the organisation s structure for managing its processes or business activities. This structure transforms input of resources into a product or service that meets the organisation s business objectives, satisfies the customer s quality requirements and complies with regulations. ISO 9001 provides a framework of requirements for management to address customer focus, process the management approach, and pursue continuous performance improvement. The Benefits Achieve consistency of product/service quality and compliance with legal requirements Formalise Good Working Practices Assure satisfaction and added value to customers Reduce costs for quality Be internationally recognised as a well-managed organisation and business The ISO 9001 standard is based on the management principles as shown below. These principles can be used by senior management as a framework to guide organisations toward improved performance. The 8 Principles: 1. Customer focus 2. Leadership 3. Involvement of people 4. Process approach 5. System approach to management 6. Continual improvement 7. Factual approach to decision making 8. Mutually beneficial supplier relationships Delivering On-Time and to Specification 10
Development, Implementation and Assessment of Food Safety management system (FSMS) HACCP - Hazards Analysis & Critical Control Points is a widely recognised and used product safety management principle in food manufacturing, processing, treatment and service organisations. Implementation of HACCP is a legislative requirement for the food industry in many countries. By partnering with a quality management system, the food organisation is able to manage the safety of food products under the internationally recognized management system structure. HACCP principles require identification of the critical control points in the manufacturing or service processes and set up of the controls for food safety. QUALMS Group has developed a technical specification of requirements for an operational HACCP system to be used in development, implementation and assessment in the food manufacturing and servicing industries. ISO Food Safety Management System is an international standard designed to ensure worldwide safe food supply chains and provide a framework of internationally harmonised requirements for the global approach that is needed. A major resulting benefit is that ISO makes it easier for organisations to implement the Codex Alimentarius HACCP (Hazards Analysis and Critical Control Points) system for food hygiene in a harmonised way, which does not vary with the country or food product concerned. ISO allows all types of organisations within the food supply chain to implement a food safety management system. The supply chain members range from farms, feed producers, primary producers, food manufacturers, transport and storage operators and subcontractors to retail and food service outlets together with related business such as producers of equipment, packaging material, cleaning agents, additives and ingredients. Food safety management systems that conform to ISO can be certified. This answers the growing demand in the food sector for the certification of suppliers. The standard can also be implemented solely for the benefits it provides without certification of conformity. 11
BRC British Retail Consortium first issued the Global Food Standard in 1998 with the intention of eliminating multiple audits by retailer and third party auditors on food manufacturers supplying UK retailers with their own brand products. This standard is used as the benchmark for food safety management and has been extensively revised to reflect EU legislation and continuous best practice requirements. It possesses a comprehensive scope covering all areas of product safety and legality issues and addresses part of the due diligence required of both the supplier and the retailer. The BRC standard has now become the internationally recognised mark of excellence. Certification to the standard verifies technical competence and aids suppliers, brand owners and retailers fulfilment of legal obligations. It also safeguards the consumer. The retailers, food producers, importers, caterers, ingredient suppliers and the food service industry can all benefit greatly from this essential standard. It is currently used by suppliers in Europe, Africa, North and South America, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East. QUALMS Group offers training and consulting to interested food suppliers and clients in preparing them for implementation and certification which forms a critical part of food supplier qualification. FSSC Food Safety Systems Certification food safety is a global concern, not only because of the importance for public health, but also because of its impact on international trade. Globalization of food production and procurement makes food chains longer and more complex and increases the risk of food safety incidents. Effective and harmonized food safety systems shall manage and ensure the safety and suitability of food in each link of the supply chain. For this reason ISO developed the standard for food safety management systems ISO 22000, which applies to all organizations in the food chain and thus ensures integrity of the chain. Parallel to this development there is an increasing need for harmonized certification of the food safety systems in order to create justified confidence that all necessary measures are taken to ensure food safety in previous links of the chain. In this context ISO developed the technical specification ISO/ TS that contains requirements for bodies providing certification of the food safety management systems. These developments were triggered by the increasing need of food manufacturers for a generally accepted food safety certificate that meets with the requirements of the subsequent customers in the chain and may incorporate the requirements of the different certification schemes of the retail organizations. As a follow up the FoodDrinkEurope took the initiative to develop a technical specification that specifies the requirements for good practices in food manufacturing and that meets customer requirements. Implementation of these good practices is an essential part of the food safety system and creates confidence in trade. The British Standard Institution (BSI) issued these requirements as the Publicly Available Specification BSI PAS 220. As a next step FoodDrinkEurope initiated the development of a certification scheme for food safety systems of food manufacturers that incorporates the standards ISO 22000, ISO/TS / PAS 220 and guidance on the application of ISO 22000, ISO/TS The aim of this scheme is to harmonize the certification requirements and methods for food safety systems in the food chain and to ensure the issue of trustworthy food safety certificates that are comparable as regards content and scope. The Foundation was commissioned by FoodDrinkEurope to develop this scheme and retains the legal ownership and the licence agreements for the certification bodies. QUALMS Group offers training and consulting to interested food manufacturers and clients in preparing them for implementation and certification which forms a critical part of food manufacturers qualification. Delivering On-Time and to Specification 12
Development, Implementation and Assessment of Occupational Health & Safety OHSAS Occupational Health & Safety is an international occupational health and safety management system specification. The specification is comprised of two parts, and 18002, and embraces BS 8800 and a number of other publications. The standard follows the structure of ISO 14001, requiring top-level commitment to compliance with legislation, prevention of accidents, promotion of good health and continual improvement. The OHSAS specification is applicable to any organisation that wishes to: Establish an OH&S management system to eliminate or minimise risk to employees and other interested parties who may be exposed to activities with OH&S risks Assure compliance with its own OH&S policy Demonstrate such compliance to the stakeholders Implement, maintain and continually improve an OH&S management system Make a self-determination and declaration of compliance with this OHSAS specification Seek third party independent certification of its OH&S management system An OHSAS development and implementation assists in a variety of business to minimise risk to employees and other interested parties; improve an existing OH&S management system; demonstrate diligence; gain assurance; among others. The Occupational Health and Safety Management System supports organisations to create a culture of safety and maintain business sustainability. The Benefits: Internationally recognised and accepted standard Easily assessed with existing management systems Skilled internal auditors who are trained for various systems Consistency in internal audit methodology Duplication of similar elements of each standard is avoided Delivering On-Time and to Specification 13
Development, Implementation and Assessment of Environmental management system (EMS) ISO Environmental Management System; With the worldwide growing concerns regarding our living environment, ISO is recognised more and more as an organisation s high level commitment to environmental protection. Over 110,000 organisations in 138 countries have implemented ISO standard requirements in their environmental management system and have been assessed and certified. The ISO standard is primarily concerned with the approach of environmental management, which provides guidance to the organisation in order to: Minimise harmful effects on the environment caused by business activities; and Achieve continual improvement of environmental performance The standard is widely recognised as a generic environmental management system standard which can be applied to any organisation, large or small, whatever its product or service. Management system refers to the organisation s structure for managing its processes or activities. This structure transforms input of resources into a product or service that meets the organisation s environmental objectives such as complying with regulations and resource effectiveness. Environmental responsibility is an emotional and controversial subject around the world. The public wants protection and governments want regulation. Business is in the middle and pressed by both. ISO was first issued in 1996 to meet market demands and provide business with a management system standard that demands top-level commitment to legislative compliance, pollution prevention and continual improvement that can be independently verified through accredited certification. The Benefits Internationally recognised and accepted standard Formal accredited certificate giving confidence to customers and stakeholders Can be easily integrated with existing management systems Provision of skilled environmental auditors Consistency in audit methodology QUALMS Group professional consultants and assessors work with clients to ensure the management systems are effectively developed, implemented, maintained and continuously improved to meet customers growing expectations and legal statutory requirements. 14

Industrial Food Safety Assurance Program (IFSAP ) Each year, the consumption of unsafe food leads to illnesses in over 2 billion people and 32 million deaths worldwide (WHO, 2012). Food safety hazards can be introduced or enhanced in food materials along the food chain through wrongful acquisition of ingredients, poor storage practices, unclean work area, poor personnel hygiene and practices. In industrial set ups, where every employee s role is vital to the collective achievement of set targets, poor food safety practices which can result in illnesses, loss of productive man hours, high medical expenses and high staff turnover cannot be tolerated. QUALMS Group has developed the Industrial Food Safety Assurance Program (IFSAP ) to serve our clients in the industrial sector in this regard, The program assesses and rectifies lapses in food acquisition and handling to avoid food borne illnesses and continually improves on food service delivery. It is applicable to in-house catering providers as well as outsourced food providers. The program involves: Gap assessment and rectification of lapses in food preparation, transportation and service; Gradual food safety training for catering personnel and other safety executives; Implementation of best practices and safe working procedures; Food safety awareness for consumers/industrial personnel; Periodic second party audits to assure safety and ensure continual improvement. 16
