What do you want to learn? The ALDD programme aims to develop and encourage your independence, health, fitness and work ready skills. You practice speaking, listening, literacy and numeracy skills on all our courses. What courses do we offer? Mosaics, pottery, art and creative textiles, singing and drumming, performing arts and gardening, personal finance, independent living, computers, cookery and more. The courses are free. CALAT offers a wide choice of interesting and enjoyable art and craft courses. Our tutors are outstanding professional practitioners who will encourage you to develop your creativity and skills. Key for Art and Craft courses, unless specified otherwise: Beginners & Improvers - as a beginner or improver you will be made to feel comfortable and will gradually build up confidence as you progress and develop your skills. Intermediate - join this level if you have recently progressed in one of our beginners or improvers classes or have gained experience and ability elsewhere. Advanced - suitable if you have recently progressed within an intermediate class, or have extensive experience. - for mixed abilities, including beginners. 7 Beauty therapy and Complementary therapy A programme of Beauty and Complementary therapy courses accredited by ITEC provide a foundation for working in these two industries. A variety of ITEC courses provide vocational qualifications which enable you to obtain the skills necessary for employment or self employment. CALAT courses in these subjects are offered subject to availability of government funding. All ITEC Level 2 and Level 3 courses require applicants to attend an interview and assessment session. 9 Computing and IT We offer a range of accredited qualifications from Entry to Level 2. The courses cover using the internet, computer safety, document creation, Microsoft Office programmes (Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access). These are ideal if you are looking for a job or want to update your skills to improve your career prospects. All courses are also suitable for anyone wanting to use a computer for leisure and are accredited. If you wish to do any of these courses, please attend an induction session on any Monday at 2pm at CALAT Central Croydon Centre so that you can register and enrol. You do not have to book. 11 ABC Awards Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills This full year course is an accredited introduction to the counselling profession and the practical skills required within it. The course provides a qualification and is suitable for those looking to progress in counselling training or as an introduction to transferable communication skills that are useful in other career and educational opportunities. Level 1 Award in Caring for Children This is an introductory course for those interested in working with children. You will explore key concepts involved in delivering high quality childcare and find out about the range of jobs available within the sector. This course prepares you for the Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People s Workforce or for the Croydon Childminding Training Package. Course attendance is from 9:30-3:00pm once a week. Courses start in April and May 2014. Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People s Workforce This course leads to the nationally recognised qualification for the childcare sector. To join this course you must have substantional experience of working in an early years setting or have successfully completed the Level 1 Award in Caring for Children. In addition to attending classroom sessions you will need to undertake a 300 hour work placement (10 hours per week). You will produce written assignments to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding and you will also be observed by a CALAT assessor in your workplace to evidence how you perform your role at work. You will also work towards a literacy qualification. Course attendance is from 1.5 days per week. All learners will need to complete a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) form before commencing the workplacement. Next course starts in September 2014. Level 3 Diploma for Early Years Educators This new qualification will be the required qualification for people working with Early Years children from September 2014. We are currently developing this course and are accepting applications from interested learners. We will update information on our website www.calat.ac.uk as it becomes available. You will work towards the Entry 3 Certificate in Employability and Personal Development. You will also work towards a literacy qualification. This course prepares you for the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting the Wider Curriculum. Course attendance is from 9:30-3:00pm 1.5 days per week. Level 2 Certificate in Supporting the Wider Curriculum This course leads to the nationally recognised qualification for school support staff. To join this course you must have some experience working or volunteering in schools or have successfully completed the Preparing to Work in Schools course. In addition to attending classroom sessions you will need to undertake a 120 hour work placement (5 hours per week). You will produce written assignments to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding and be observed by a CALAT assessor in your workplace to evidence how you perform your role at work. You will also work towards a maths qualification. Course attendance is from 1.5 days per week. All learners will need to complete a DBS Enhanced Disclosure before commencing the workplacement. Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning This course leads to the nationally recognised qualification for Teaching Assistants. To join this course you must be working as a Teaching Assistant in a local school or have successfully completed the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting the Wider Curriculum qualification. If you are not currently employed you will need to undertake a 120 hour work placement (5 hours per week). You will produce written assignments to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding and be observed by a CALAT assessor in your workplace to evidence how you perform your role at work. Course attendance is from 4:00-6:30pm once a week. Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning This is an advanced diploma for experienced Teaching Assistants. You will need to have substantial experience in this role. Alternatively you will have successfully have completed the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting the Wider Curriculum and have continued in your work placement and your experience will be sufficient to meet the qualification requirements. Working with children, young people and families 21 Working with Parents Volunteer Programme CALAT and Croydon Council are working partnership to provide this opportunity for people who wish to develop their skills in the field of family support. This programme runs twice a year and is free to people who commit to volunteer supporting parents for a minimum of 1 year. You will need to volunteer in a suitable setting, such as a children s centre and undertake a training programme once a week at CALAT Thornton Heath Centre. You will work towards the Level 2 Award in Working with Parents. You will gain this qualification by producing written assignments and by a CALAT assessor observing you in your voluntary placement. Please note that all volunteers will undergo an enhanced DBS disclosure before starting their placements. Teacher, Assessor and Verifier Training CALAT offers high-quality training to develop the professional skills you need to work as a teacher of adults or as an assessor of vocational qualifications. Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) This qualification replaces the PTLLS award and is the minimum level qualification to teach within the adult education sector. A surcharge of 1.65% will be made on all credit card payments. Bank mandate must be completed at time of enrolment. only available for courses running for six weeks or more with a total fee above 120.00 a fee of 10.00 will be added to your fee when using this facility (this is not included in the 120.00 total fee) an initial payment of 35% must be made at time of enrolment and the remaining fee will be paid by standing order starting 30 days after enrolment date. Funding Funding for Level 3 courses Level 3 courses can be funded in one of the following ways: If you are 19-23 and have no previous Level 3 qualifications you will be entitled to free tuition, which includes exam and relevant materials costs. If you are aged 24 years or over you can apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to fund the costs of your course If you are aged 24 years or over you can pay the full published fee yourself. 24+ Advanced Learning Loans These are available for anyone aged 24 or over wishing to study a Level 3 or above qualification.this means that learners do not have to pay the course fee upfront. Repayments for the loan will only start once the adult is earning over 21,000 per year. The amount paid back each year is dependent on the wage earned over this amount and not how much the course costs. Loans are funded from the Student Loan Company and are not means tested or subject to credit checks. The loan is available irrespective of the learner s current employment status. The application form is simple and can be done online. Therefore different qualifications at Level 3 may cost differing amounts. CALAT courses that are affected include: Beauty, Childcare, Health & Social Care, A levels and Children s Workforce. Other funding and assistance If you are on a low income and on a course leading to a qualification, you may be eligible to apply for the Discretionary Learner Support Fund (Access Fund). The fund could help pay towards the cost of course tuition fees, examination fees, course materials and child care. Adults with learning difficulties and/or disabilites (ALDD) may be eligible to apply for support with travel costs. If you are on a non-accredited course and receive a state means tested benefit or if you are on a low income (annual household income of 25,000 or less), you may be eligible to apply for a Community Learning Bursary.
Learner information 23 If you are on a course which is funded by the 24+ Advanced Learning Loan, you may be eligible for additional financial support with travel costs, childcare and essential equipment through the loans bursary.
