3 Apprenticeships Apprenticeships combine employment and training allowing the apprentice to gain valuable work experience and a recognised qualification whilst earning a salary. 4 Who are they for? They are for anyone aged 16+ whether they are just leaving school/college, have been working for a number of years or are seeking to start a new career. How long do they take? They can take anything from one to four years to complete, depending on the type of Apprenticeship and chosen level. Apprenticeship Levels Intermediate Apprenticeships - Apprentices work towards a Level 2 Competence Qualification, Functional Skills in Maths, English and in some cases ICT and, in most cases, a relevant knowledge based qualification. Advanced Apprenticeships - Apprentices work towards a Level 3 Competence Qualification, Functional Skills in Maths, English and in some cases ICT and, in most cases, a relevant knowledge-based qualification. Higher Apprenticeships - Apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications at Level 4 or above. How is an Apprenticeship delivered? We offer a range of flexible delivery methods to meet the needs of both the employer and apprentice. These consist of on-the-job training, college-based training and work based supported learning. All apprentices are allocated an assessor who will support their progress and development through workplace visits. Training is not tied to the academic year; the programme can start at any time. How much will an apprentice earn? The National Apprenticeship wage is 2.73 per hour ( 3.30 per hour from October 2015) for apprentices under 19, or for those who are aged and in the first year of their Apprenticeship, however some employers pay more. Anyone over 24 must be earning the national minimum wage, or higher. How much does an Apprenticeship cost? Apprenticeships are funded by the government though the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) year olds fully funded by the SFA Anyone 19+ part funded by the SFA with a small employer/learner contribution How many hours does an apprentice need to work? All apprentices must be employed for at least 30 hours per week. There are a small number of circumstances where the learner cannot complete the full 30 hours, in these cases employment must be more than 16 hours per week. How to enrol/finding employment You can apply for an Apprenticeship if you are already in employment or are seeking employment. All you have to do is download the Apprenticeship application form from our website, fill it in and send it to the address below. Whether you are leading a team for the first time or preparing to step up to senior management, ILM qualifications can help you develop the skills, knowledge and personal abilities you need to succeed. The innovative design of the Level 2 Certificate in Team Leading The Level 2 Certificate has been designed to develop the knowledge and skills which team members and potential team leaders require to become more effective in their workplace and to lead a successful team. Level 3 Certificate in Leadership and Management The Level 3 Certificate in Leadership and Management has been designed to develop the leadership and management skills of new or aspiring first time managers. Level 4 Certificate in Leadership and Management The Level 4 Certificate in Leadership and Management has been designed to help participants develop a wide range of middle management and leadership skills. qualifications means you can fast-track your progression and target training to your precise needs. ILM qualifications are a proven route to improving your performance, communications skills and ability to motivate. Anyone studying for an ILM qualification receives six months trial membership to ILM, giving you access to a range of resources and services designed to support your learning and development. Level 5 Certificate in Leadership and Management The Level 5 Certificate has been designed to give current managers a solid foundation for their formal development. Learners will develop a wide range of basic middle management skills and gain the comprehensive leadership and management knowledge required at this level. Level 3 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring This qualification is designed for junior managers seeking to gain the skills, knowledge and confidence to coach and mentor people. It is an ideal starting point for those considering a career in coaching and mentoring. There are six mandatory units in this qualification. Two of the units focus on understanding good practice in workplace coaching and mentoring and exploring the role of a coach and mentor, the processes they follow and the qualities and abilities required. There are two units that reflect on the learner s own skills as a coach or mentor in the workplace, introducing tools and techniques to develop and improve their practice. 6 Training and Education 10 Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is a first stage teaching qualification and has a teaching/training practice requirement. It is an in service qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers/trainers in England. It may be possible for pre-service teachers/trainers (defined as those who are not formally contracted as teachers/trainers) to complete this qualification. All candidates, whether pre-service or in-service must have access to 30 hours of teaching, 3hrs of which will be observed. This qualification is suitable for those delivering education and training in any learning environment. Upon successful completion of this qualification, you will have a fundamental understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners. You will be able to use initial and diagnostic assessments to plan and deliver inclusive teaching and learning, assess learning and use appropriate resources to support effective learning. Entry requirements You will be required to have a reasonable level of language, literacy and numeracy. You should be aware that if you wish to progress to the Level 5 and become a teaching professional you will need to be qualified to Level 2 in both Maths and English. Topics include: planning to enable inclusive and engaging learning theories and principles which underpin and enable learning assessment principles and practice curriculum development continuing personal development and reflective practice wider professional practice You are expected to demonstrate at least 100 hours of teaching. This can include any recent teaching you have carried out which must be supported by evidence such as session plans, schemes of work and any other official documentation. Upon successful completion, you will be awarded a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training from City & Guilds. Teachers can then progress with their professional development by working towards QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills). Entry requirements You are expected to have a Level 2 qualification in English (or equivalent). You do not need a specific Mathematics qualification to join this course, however you should be aware that teaching professionals should be qualified to Level 2 equivalent. The Henley College can provide support to help you achieve both Maths and English qualifications. All applicants will be interviewed prior to enrolment; interviews will be held on Wednesday 8th July or Wednesday 9th September. Cost 2900 ( 1450 per year). For further information, or to arrange an interview, please contact Toni O Toole on or [email protected] Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement The Edexcel Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (QCF) is for those who assess both occupational competence in the work environment and vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in environments other than the workplace (e.g. a workshop, classroom or other training environment). You will need to have a Level 3 qualification in your area of expertise, or at least 5 years experience in your occupational area. The Certificate comprises of 3 units. Unit 1 is a knowledge unit which will be delivered during the 5 week classroom training sessions. Units 2 and 3 are competency-based units. To achieve these units you will be required to work with a minimum of two learners who are working towards an NVQ/work based qualification. You will build a portfolio of evidence which shows you have an understanding of assessment principles and practices and have supported your learners by planning and carrying out assessments, observing, setting questions/ assignments and giving feedback. You will be allocated an assessor who will provide you with 1-1 support both in and out of the workplace. Cost 575. Applicants aged 24+ can apply for a learner loan, the course is subsidised for those aged Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice This course consists of two units and you will need to be responsible for at least two assessors to complete the course. The first unit is theory-based and the second is practical. The units are: Understanding the Principles and Practices of Internally Assuring the Quality of Assessment Internally Assure the Quality of Assessment The qualification is intended for those who maintain the quality of assessment from within an organisation or assessment centre. The first unit is assessed using professional discussion after completion of the three training dates. The second unit is assessed within the workplace. 7 12 Academic igcse English This course is designed to help you communicate effectively both in speech and written form and follows the igcse Cambridge Board curriculum. It will cover a variety of styles of writing from descriptive, narrative and imaginative essays to the more practical business English and letters. Special emphasis is placed upon the needs of individual students to develop particular skills in effective reading, writing and speaking. Assessment is through examination. The cost of textbooks and exam fees are not included in the course fee. GCSE Maths The course covers the National Curriculum in Mathematics, including sections on number, handling data, algebra, shape and space. It leads to a GCSE at Foundation Level. The cost of textbooks and exam fees are not included in the course fee. GCSE Maths Higher Level For students who require GCSE Mathematics at grade C, but who aspire to achieve a higher grade. Our aim is to help ensure that you will achieve at least a grade C, in return you will need to attend all the lessons and attempt all of the homework. You will need to purchase your own textbook. The course fee does not include exam fees. You may be eligible for funding if you do not already have an A-C grade. AS/A2 Level English Language and Literature You will gain a two-fold benefit from this course which offers an integrated approach to the study of language and literature. Two units will be covered for AS (Unit 1: Voices in Speech and Writing and Unit 2: Creating Texts, a coursework module) and a further two for the A2 (Unit 3: Varieties in Language and Literature and Unit 4: Presenting the world also a coursework unit). You will be able to develop your personal writing skills by adapting material for a variety of contexts, as well as experimenting in original writing and examining spoken language in use. Through the study of two set literature texts for AS and another two for A2, you will extend your critical awareness and refine your skills of close textual analysis. The cost of textbooks and exam fees are not included in the course fee. AS/A2 Law A subject which plays a central role in society and everyday lives, A Level Law will provide you with the opportunity to examine, understand and explore the English Legal System, Sources of Law and Criminal Law. The specifications provide an excellent foundation for the study of Law or related courses in Higher Education. No prior knowledge of the subject is required, although it is recommended that you have good communication skills, together with a good memory for detail. There is, however, an emphasis on formal essay writing and this should be taken into account when making your application. AS/A2 Psychology This course will introduce you to the major areas of study such as cognitive, behavioural, development, biological, social and abnormal psychology. Within these areas of study you will have the opportunity to explore topics related to stress, eating behaviours, aggression, child development, social influence, depression and schizophrenia. This course includes lectures and formal and informal discussions. There is the opportunity to take the AS/A2 exams if you wish. AS/A2 Sociology Sociology explores the relationships between society s social instwtigate social issues and social problems. You will be shown how to apply this knowledge to a number of selected sociological topics including: culture and identity, the family, poverty, education and health at AS Level; crime and deviance, mass media and power and politics for A2. Core themes such as socialisation, social class and stratification Functional Skills Functional skills are intended to provide the essential skills in English, Mathematics and ICT that enable everyone to deal with practical problems and challenges of life, at home, in education and at work. Functional Skills Maths This course will help you to understand your current ability and focus on areas requiring additional improvement. You will be able to gradually increase your skills and qualifications in maths, taking assignments and tests when you are ready. You will learn about: numbers (rounding and estimating), calculations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing), fractions (decimals and percentages), perimeter, area and volume, 2D and 3D shapes, ratio and scale drawings, metric measures, formula, handling data (charts, tables and graphs), test technique and revision. Functional Skills and GCSE Maths and English courses are available free of charge to those who do not already have a Level 2 (GCSE Grade C or above) in these subjects. Please note a 3 registration fee will apply. and power will also be studied. Assessment will be by four examinations. There are no special requirements to study on this course; enthusiasm and a willingness to study independently are more important. Functional Skills English Functional Skills English is designed to give learners the literacy skills to operate confidently, effectively and independently in education, work and everyday life. It is made up of three components: Speaking, Listening and Communication Reading Writing Functional Skills ICT This course covers word processing, Excel spreadsheets, Access database, PowerPoint presentations, Publisher, internet and , ICT basics and using Windows at a Level 2. 8 14 ArtS and CraftS Ceramics This course gives you the chance to explore the creative potential of clay, broaden your current skill levels and increase your knowledge of ceramic materials and processes. This is a practical workshop-based course with group and individual demonstrations of a variety of techniques. You will learn and develop new skills to produce finished ceramic pieces and will work on your own designs at a pace appropriate to your skill level and experience with individual tutor guidance. Suitable for both beginners and more experienced potters. Introduction to Acrylic Painting Come along and explore several different techniques of painting with acrylics including studying composition, colour, colour mixing and observation. Subject matter will include still life and figurative painting. During the course you will need to bring with you a range of acrylic brushes of varying sizes, pencils, a selection of acrylic paints, acrylic paper and a stretched canvas. Introduction to Botanical Art A fun, relaxed and informative course for beginners. If you love flowers and have always wanted to have a go at painting or drawing them, then this course aims to provide a thorough grounding in the basics of rendering form and colour and how to portray what you see. This course will include tips on how to improve your drawing skills through close observation of plant structures. There will be some set exercises - but individual creative expression is always encouraged. Students will need to provide their own art materials. Please see our website for recommendations. Jewellery Making for Beginners A jewellery making class for beginners, no experience or equipment required. The course will include an introduction to essential tools, different types of components and the wonderful variety of beads and stringing materials available. Learn how to thread, knot, turn head pins and use jump rings to make beautiful, wearable jewellery. Each week you will learn a new technique to make a new piece of jewellery. Throughout the course you will make 6 10 pieces of jewellery to take home including bracelets, earrings and necklaces. All tools and materials included in the course cost. KANZASHI SILK FLOWER MAKING Kanzashi is a traditional silk flower making technique from Japan. This ornamentation is based on origami, using small squares of fabric instead of folded paper. On this course you will learning the art of Kanzashi using ribbon to create your own flowers which can be used as decoration or as accessories such as hairbands or clips. Life Drawing and Painting Suitable for both beginners and those with previous experience in drawing, this course concentrates on learning to draw from observation. By following a series of different exercises, you will be encouraged to develop your ability to look and respond to the human form and develop your mark-making skills. We will also cover the basics of composition, including how to plan a drawing. By taking into consideration both outline and negative space you will learn to measure, respond to light and develop a concept of space and form. Additionally, you will be encouraged to try different media and work in colour. The tutor will be available to give individual help and advice. STAINED GLASS DESIGN Explore the art of making stained glass using traditional tools and materials during these creative workshops. Beginners will start with a simple set project to introduce you to the various techniques needed to make a panel. You will be taught to prepare a cutting template, cut coloured glass, assemble the glass with lead and solder the pieces together. You will go on to develop ideas for larger projects, which can include a window to be installed into your own home. Everyone is given individual guidance and works at their own pace. Watercolour Painting This course is suitable for both beginners and experienced painters alike, learning and developing skills to produce confident pieces whilst enjoying the freedom and fun that this media brings. You will be encouraged to explore the diverse styles of watercolour painting, covering a different subject each session. Beginners will start by learning the basic techniques whilst more advanced students can further develop ideas. You will work on your own paintings at a pace appropriate to your skill level with one-to-one tutor guidance and discussion. Any type of digital camera is suitable. Expand your Digital Photography This course will encourage you to use the full capabilities of your camera with interesting and diverse projects. A stimulating class for anyone with basic skills needing fresh motivation. Creative Photography The Creative Photography course is suitable for photographers at all levels of experience; all you need is a digital camera with manual exposure controls (either SLR or mirror-less system). Each session combines some theory with slideshows and a practical workshop where students will take photographs, putting what we have learned into practice. We also look at influential practitioners from the past to inspire and inform our own photography. Two hours of guided photography in the field is included in this course. 21 RYA Royal Yachting Association Shore-Based Qualifications 40 RYA Royal Yachting Association RYA Day Skipper A course to provide shore-based instruction on basic seamanship and navigation for the RYA syllabus over a 20 week period. It is primarily for those involved in small craft handling in tidal waters, but sea anglers, divers and those who wish to know how to navigate through basic and electronic chart work will benefit from the course. Previous practical experience is useful, but not essential. During the course you will complete a number of navigational exercises and other papers. 22 Cambridge English Language Courses for Foreign Students Pathways Plus Standalone courses for adults with learning difficulties. 42 Cambridge English Language Courses for Foreign Students This course will lead to an internationally recognised qualification in English and enable you to make some new friends whilst studying. Cambridge English Language courses are available at four levels: Elementary A2 European framework level (students must have basic English for this course), Lower Intermediate B1, Upper Intermediate B2 and Advanced C1. All courses lead to examinations in June. There will be an Open Information Session for students and host families on Wednesday 9th September at 1.30pm at the Deanfield site. The first assessment test, to determine your level of tuition, will be on Monday 14th September at 6.30pm, at the Deanfield site. Subsequent tests will be held weekly; please telephone to find out the day and time. Summer exams will take place during June. Classes are held during the daytime, two 90 minute sessions per week, with exact timings to be confirmed at the start of the course. Students can use their literacy skills to be creative, individually or in a group, writing, composing poems, stories, notes, card messages and posters. Communications Skills A course designed to improve communication skills through games, music, role-play and outdoor activities using a variety of communication aids including signing, widget and social signs. This course is open to students and carers of all abilities. Cooking Skills 1 & 2 Students can learn cooking skills as well as develop literacy and independence skills through their cooking. Sessions will involve preparing various snacks, cakes, biscuits and simple meals. Horticultural Skills This course offers basic gardening and associated craft skills through indoor and outdoor activities. The course aims to develop the students basic skills in maintaining and developing the Pathways garden. Students will undertake a learning programme for the gardening year and work towards achieving individual full potential. Sensory Social Skills 1 & 3 A course primarily designed for individuals with profound or multiple learning difficulties. Students will work towards targets designed to enhance communication skills, an awareness of themselves and others and the environment, through a sensory programme including art, cookery, gardening activities, music, movement and the use of the Sensory Room. Social Enterprise 1 & 2 During this course students will experiment with a variety of techniques and materials. These will include: painting, drawing, collage, 3D modelling, papier maché, pottery and printing. Suitable for students who enjoy creative activities. Social Enterprise 3 A course of arts, crafts and other hobbies to include gardening. For people who enjoy being creative and working in a small friendly group. Students can enjoy making different items using various art and craft techniques. 43 Pathways Plus A tuition fee is payable (averaging 5.00 per hour) and a materials charge is applicable.
