DIMENSIONS THE WRIGHT STATE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL PSYCHOLOGY NEWSLETTER Spring/Summer/Fall 2012 Dr. Adia Winfrey Class of 2008 Named 2012 Alumni of the Year Dr. Adia Winfrey was selected as the 2012 Alumni of the Year, graduating from Wright State University School of Professional Psychology in 2008. According to Dr. Adia, she has made numerous achievements at the national and international levels, volunteered her time on professional and community levels, all while seeking to advance the University and the School. As an SOPP student, Dr. Winfrey told herself, and her dissertation panel, that she would change the field of I hope this message finds you well. Things are rolling for SOPP. We were recently reaccredited for seven years by the American Psychological Association. This means that SOPP is one of the nation's Psy.D. programs psychology through rap music. After piloting the program, H.Y.P.E.: Healing Young People thru Empowerment during her internship, she wrote a manuscript on the program which was later selected for publication. In December 2009, H.Y.P.E.: Healing Young People thru Empowerment was released, as well as The H.Y.P.E. Communicator monthly e-newsletter. Dr. Winfrey received immediate attention from professionals and parents all over the country. She participated in her first national radio interview on the Michael Baisden Show. Other media features have included NPR, JET Magazine, the Tom Joyner Morning Show, and the American Urban Radio Networks. Dr. Adia also founded Elevating Us, LLC, a company dedicated to empowering communities through partnerships with non-profits and professional development workshops for mental health and education professionals. This program challenge biases and celebrates Hip Hop. In 2011, she started The H.Y.P.E. Movement, a mentoring program that began with one youth in Stone Mountain, GA and has extended to include youth from all over Metro Atlanta. Message From Dean Larry James that has been continuously accredited from the start of our Program. Our new Child Emphasis program has attracted many students and it continues to build on a solid SOPP foundation. SOPP is going international! We're all excited about the opportunity to partner with universities in Nigeria and India to improve the quality of mental health education and clinical services in these countries. NEWSLETTER ALUMNI TITLE CLASS NOTES Page 2 Class of 2005 Dr. Erin Armour was hired by her internship site at James Quillen VAMC in Primary Care Mental Health Integration in Tennessee. Class of Dr. Paul Smiley recently passed the examination for the Diplomate in Clinical Psychology. Class of 2005 Dr. Richard Sears received a book contract with Professional Resource Press for an edited book tentatively titled Perspectives on Spirituality and Religion in Psychotherapy. Over a dozen SOPP students contributed chapters and Alison Niblick (Class of 2013), is one of the co-editors. Look for the book to be released sometime during the Spring or Summer of 2013. Class of 2007 Dr. Robert Denton was promoted in June as the Director and Training Director for the APA accredited predoctoral internship program at Guidestone in Cleveland Ohio. Dr. Denton along with Dr. Richard Sears (Class of 2005), co-authored a book, Mindfulness in Clinical Practice, published in August, 2011. Class of 2011 Dr. Abraham Eapen has accepted a position, Staff Psychologist Group Coordinator at Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI. Pictured left to right Drs. SOPP alumni and faculty were well represented. Anna Fedotova (Class of 2011), representing Wilford Hall Medical Center, Kristin Galloway (Class of 2011), representing Seymour Johnson, AFB, North Carolina and Ryan Buhite (Class of 2006?) representing Wright Patterson AFB, along with faculty members Drs. Kathy Malloy and James Dobbins. SOPP alumni and faculty were presenting on sexual identity issues in practice for the United States Air Force.

MAJOR KIMBERLY FINNEY Class of 1999 Announces Her Retirement from the United States Air Force Major Kimberly Finney final assignment was the flight commander of the Mental Health Clinic, 61 st Medical Squadron at Los Angeles Air Force Base, California. She was responsible for the delivery of mental health services, family advocacy and substance abuse services to the 8,300 beneficiaries served by the Los Angeles Air Force Base clinic. Major Finney is from Chicago, Illinois. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Rush University in Biological Sciences and completed a post graduate Fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in Immunohematology. In 1989, Major Finney entered the Air Force as a Laboratory Officer and was assigned to Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. At Wright-Patterson, she established its first blood donor center and initiated bone marrow screening. Her efforts delivered over 2,600 units of blood in eight days during Operation Desert Storm. Her bone marrow program not only increased the national registry by over 1,500 donors, but provided a second chance at life for three Department of Defense members. These achievements resulted in her being the Air Force winner of the prestigious Admiral Zumwalt Award for Community Leadership. Major Finney left active duty service in 1994 to pursue a Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology. She continued her service as a member of the Air Force Reserves and during this timeframe was chosen by the American Association of Blood Banks as an accreditation inspector for civilian and military blood banks. In 1998, Major Finney was selected by the Air Force to complete her psychology residency at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Following several assignments as an Air Force psychologist, Major Finney was selected as the Field Grade Psychologist of the Year for 2003 by Air Force Space Command (AFSPC). In 2004, she was selected to attend a fellowship in Psychopharmacology. This fellowship, in conjunction with Nova Southeastern University, earned her a post-doctoral Master of Science degree in Psychopharmacology. She is currently one of only four Air Force psychologists and one of approximately 150 psychologists nationwide who are credentialed to prescribe medications. 2012 CONVOCATION SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS Page 6 The Dean s Award Scholarship was awarded to Kimberly Conde and Amber Thornton. This scholarship recognizes the student who best demonstrates those exemplary personal and professional qualities that are in the finest traditions of the science of professional psychology. The E. Scott Redman Scholarship was awarded to Hannah Gammon, Anne Reagan and Amanda Schaad. This scholarship recognizes the student who excels in community service beyond that required in practica and other curricular activities. The award was initiated in honor of Dr. Scott Redman a 1984 graduate who passed away in 1986. The Academy of Psychology Scholarship was awarded to Currlin Alexis and Katherine Isaza. This scholarship recognizes the student the best demonstrates continued excellence in progressing through the SOPP curriculum while overcoming hardships, especially of a personal or financial nature. The Bruce E and Lenora Kline Scholarship was awarded to Brigitte Beale. This scholarship recognizes a highly proficient and talented student who plans to continue their doctoral studies and training within the SOPP. The Jimmy Johnson Scholarship was awarded to Maria Houston. SOPP STUDENT ENGAGING IN COMMUNITY SERVICE Page 7 SOPP students participated in a weekend for Hospice's Camp Pathways. They volunteer to help Hospice of Dayton by spending a weekend of their own time at Hospice's Camp Pathways. This camp is for youth who have experienced the death of their parent or other family members. It is a great service for these kids, and a wonderful experience for our students. FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENT UPDATES Page 8 Dr. Janeece Warfield Announces Phase I of Ellis Playroom In 2009, Dr. Janeece Warfield submitted a proposal to the Wright State Foundation Office, and was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Vectren Foundation to refurbish the Ellis Human Development Institute s existing playroom (Phase I). The items purchased included materials for the implementation of Client Centered Play Therapy, Filial Play Therapy, Sand Tray Therapy, Theraplay, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT), and Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). Storage cabinets for the play therapy supplies, and a curtain to divide the room for clients requiring less stimulation or group work. Counseling and Wellness Award Recipients Counseling and Wellness Services were the recipients of the 2012 President for Excellence Award in the Outstanding Unit category. Congratulations CWS!!!!!! FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENT UPDATES Dr. Gokce Durmusoglu has been appointed Visiting Professor for the academic 2012-13 year. Hannah Gammon (Class of 2014) has been selected as a recipient of the American College Counseling Association (ACCA) Emerging Leader award. This award recognizes individuals who are considered to be up-and-coming leaders within the profession of college counseling. Responsibilities include serving on one of the ACCA's twelve committees for at least a year, writing an article for publication in the ACCA's newsletter, and delivering a presentation (as well as attending business meetings and trainings) at the Sixth Annual ACCA Conference (October 2012 - Orlando, Florida). Gammon's presentation is entitled "Enhancing the Experience of University Students with Mental Illness: Related Issues and Recommendations." Dustin Hamilton (Class of 2013), Kolina Delgado (Class of 2013), and Dr.Cheryl Meyer presented a poster session, What suicide notes can tell us about suicide completers, at the 45th AAS Annual Conference April 18-21, 2012. Dean Larry James has been appointed to the American Board of Professional Psychology's 2012 Board of Trustees as a specialty board representative in Clinical Health Psychology. Dr. Cheryl Meyer and Kim Conde (Class of 2015 )presented a poster presentation at the Annual Convention of the Association for Psychological Science on May 24, 2012. The poster titled, APA Writitng for Dummies, provided a guide to assist students in developing their research writing style. The guide is formatted as a research article, with sections which parallel the parts of a research paper and explain how to write that section using illustrative examples. Dr. Cheryl Meyer, Dr. Betty Yung, and Stephanie Gemmer (Class of 2013 )presented a poster presentation at the Annual Convention of the Association for Psychological Science on May 26, 2012. The poster titled, Multisource Assessment of a Graduate Clinical Psychology Training Program, examined Parallel forms of an evaluation instrument were created and administered to faculty, staff and students as a 360-degree evaluation of an academic department, assessing respondent views of facilities, support, morale, faculty, administration and curricular issues. Such an evaluation can provide insights into stakeholder views and program modifications needed. Anne Reagan (Class of 2014) was appointed student trustee on Wright State University's Board of Trustees for a term ending June 30, 2013. Richards, M.(Class of 2013), Moor, T. Structured discussion at the Association of Women in Psychology Conference, Palm Springs, CA. Dr. Michelle Schultz (Class of 2008) has been appointed Director of Clinical Training. Rosie Staal's (Class of 2014) dissertation won second place in a national competition with the American Association of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD). Her dissertation is titled "Diagnostic Accuracy in Dual Diagnosis: The Development of the Screen for Symptoms of Psychopathology in Individuals with Intellectual Disability (SSP-ID)." She received her award at the upcoming annual convention of the AAIDD. REMEMBERING DR. BETTY YUNG Page 10 On October 5, 2012, the Health Path Foundation of Ohio had an award luncheon. They established the Health Path Foundation, Dr. Betty Yung award in honor for her service, and advocacy. "Betty was a great asset to the Foundation, particularly with her leadership and knowledge of family violence prevention," said Theresa Wukusick, executive director of The HealthPath Foundation of Ohio. "Betty was also an advocate for the needs of Appalachian Ohioans and minorities suffering from the injustices of health inequities. She was a friend, colleague and mentor. We will miss her." Betty came to Wright State in 1983 joining the College of Education and Human Services. She served as Officer of Grants, Research, Evaluation and Accreditation for five years and in 1988, joined the School of Professional Psychology as a grants and proposals writer, a position she held for 25 years. At the time of her death, Betty was an associate professor and coordinator of program research and evaluator of the SOPP s Positive Adolescent Choices Training Program Betty is survived by her husband, Jerry (retired Lexis/Nexis); sons, Eric (with Miami University) and wife, Jerrilyne and children, Kierra and Nick; Chris (with University of Virginia) and his children, Ben, Joe and Harry; sister, Alice and her daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Wayne; brother-in-law, Gus Edward and wife, Cathy; and their daughters, Marianne and Elizabeth. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alva and Erma Rice (both teachers in Eastern Kentucky); in-laws, Gus and Mary Miller; and sisters, Phyllis and Kaye. Betty was a longtime Kentucky resident with undergraduate, masters and PhD degrees from the University of Kentucky. Betty was known for her love of family and friends, sense of humor and academic work. She made everyone's life better for having known her. She was a consummate team player, wonderful wife and mother and the best grandparent in the world. We will truly miss her and her never ending stories.
