5 4 Practitioner-Scholar Model College of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING The ethical practice of clinical psychology not only requires applying theory and research in clinical settings, but also demands the effective application of skills that enable the practitioner to conduct accurate assessments and therapeutic interventions. Argosy University, Twin Cities PsyD in Clinical Psychology program is grounded in theory but also consists of experiential elements that allow the student to learn by relevant research, applied theory and field experience. This integrated program design, known as the practitioner-scholar model, is an essential component in preparing aspiring psychologists for clinical practice. Professional development is led and supported by mentoring relationships with our practitioner-scholar faculty who embody the knowledge, skills, ethics and professional attitudes required of clinical psychologists. 6 PROGRAM OVERVIEW PsyD at a glance 5 Argosy University, Twin Cities Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in Clinical Psychology program is designed to educate and train students to function effectively as clinical psychologists. The program is grounded in theory and supported by appropriate practicum sequences for experiential learning through relevant research, applied theory and field experience. Through personalized oversight and instruction by faculty, students develop the attitudes, knowledge and skills essential to the practice of clinical psychology. The PsyD in Clinical Psychology degree program is 98 semester credit hours. The program s curriculum encompasses the science of psychology, clinical practice and professional development. Students also complete required coursework in: Intervention and supervision Research methodology Diversity studies Clinical research Clinical knowledge and psychotherapy During their clinical studies, students advance through progressively challenging levels of practica. At each level, a student s progress is assessed in multiple ways by faculty members and field supervisors. PsyD in Clinical Psychology students generally complete their practicum in the second and third years of the program, with an optional advanced practicum in the fourth year, and their predoctoral internship in the fifth year. In addition, students must successfully complete the Clinical Competency Examination (CCE) as part of their practicum training. Our formal curriculum provides a meaningful integration of theory, research and practice. Students acquire didactic knowledge in these areas: History of thought and development in the discipline of psychology Cognitive and affective bases of human functioning Biological bases of human behavior and social bases of individual and group behavior Human development Foundations of measurement theory and research methods Whether a student s professional emphasis is developmental, therapeutic or preventative, the key to their effectiveness lies in the expert support and guidance of Argosy University, Twin Cities accomplished faculty. Through these relationships, students apply their theoretical knowledge, implement clinical techniques and integrate research findings to enhance their competence as a clinician. As a result, students gain experiences that will better prepare them to acquire the abilities to conduct assessments and interventions, as well as maintain ethical relationships with patients and colleagues. This program is designed so that it can be completed in as little as five years and no more than seven years. Graduates of our program can be prepared to pursue a position as a licensed clinical psychologist provided they pass the appropriate licensure within one or two years of completing their degree. 7 6 ALUMNI FOCUS PRIVATE AND PERSONAL TRIUMPHS THE STORY OF ABBEY WEISS, PSYD Dr. Abbey Weiss completed her Bachelor s degree in psychology at the State University of New York. After graduation, she spent a year living and volunteering in Israel, working with immigrants from all over the world, including Ethiopia, Kurdistan, Yemen and Iran. Many of the families she met had faced severe hardship. One family s father had been murdered in front of their eyes because of their religious beliefs. In 1998, Dr. Weiss enrolled in the Clinical Psychology program at Argosy University, Twin Cities. She specifically chose Argosy University s program because she wanted to engage in clinical practice. Dr. Weiss graduated in That same year, she traveled to the Philippines where she talked firsthand with victims of abuse and torture from the Marcos regime. These stories sparked an interest in human rights that would influence her future career. Dr. Weiss obtained her first clinical job with Chrysalis in Chrysalis specialized in providing psychological services to women and their families. She worked with clients in both group and individual therapy. Many of the women had co-occurring mental and substance abuse disorders and histories of abuse. In 2006, Dr. Weiss started working with survivors of political torture at the Center of Victims of Torture. There she brought together her earlier experiences and her growing clinical expertise in trauma therapy. Her diverse caseload includes people ages 19 to 65 from 12 different countries. Dr. Weiss feels great satisfaction from her work and considers one of the highlights of her career to be: the private and personal triumphs I am privileged to witness every day during therapy. I think it is no small act of courage to face the demons of trauma, abuse, depression and all kinds of suffering, and to find that one can heal from these things, rediscover hope and find a new life. In 2010, Dr. Weiss participated in a symposium sponsored by the University of Minnesota entitled Forgiveness, Resiliency and Survivorship: Implications for Today s Survivors of Trauma, Genocide and Upheaval. She presented on the parallels found between research on survivors of the Nazi Holocaust and the torture survivors she works with now. Dr. Weiss says, I had a vision about the kind of work I wanted to do with my life. My education at Argosy University gave me the tools, knowledge and access to training that I needed to fulfill this goal.
