The postgraduate mentoring programme TUTOR QUIRÓN The Department of English and German Philology at the University of Zaragoza has been developing a Peer Mentoring Programme at the postgraduate level during the last four academic years. We have become aware of the fact that the student perceptions of a course are strongly associated with the service quality in higher education institutions. In addition, due to the new degrees that have been implemented in our university as well as the recent emphasis on the quality assessment in higher education approaches, our students satisfaction and perceptions of academic quality has become one of our main concerns. Objectives and participants in the TUTOR QUIRÓN programme The project Tutor Quirón seeks to better the students learning experiences and provide them with additional academic support that may help them improve their learning processes skills and results their time management skills their social life at university This mentoring programme is also a strategic area for assessing the quality standards of the Master in Textual and Cultural Studies in English and the PhD in English Studies. This Project counts on the participation of all the agents 2

involved in the learning process, namely the teachers and the coordinators of the MA and PhD degrees as well as final year PhD students or recent doctors in the Department of English and German Studies. They act as mentors and collaborate to provide the MA and first year PhD students enrolled in the project as mentees with the support and guidance to complete their degrees successfully. One particularly noteworthy advantage of the project is that it fosters the students acquisition of a range of professional competences which will be essential for their future academic and work life. Why enrol in the TUTOR QUIRÓN programme? On the one hand, the MA students may benefit from this programme and be advised by an individual mentor with whom they will hold regular meetings to elaborate a study plan and receive help and guidance about any problem they may encounter in this new academic stage. MA students are also encouraged to participate actively in the academic and social activities organised within the programme (see TRIP Sessions, Research Group Meetings or other activities to take place during the academic year disseminated via institutional email or through the Moodle webpage of the project) On the other hand, at the PhD level, apart from offering first year students the help of a personal mentor, we have launched the TRIP, THESIS AND RESEARCH IN PROGRESS SEMINARS. These meetings offer students an opportunity to give presentations or discuss aspects of their ongoing research to other postgraduates in a friendly environment. The TRIP Seminars are aimed at helping students progress in their research process and create a certain feeling of community and belonging among the other students. There are three sessions every academic course in which 3

PhD students may receive very interesting feedback from their colleagues and teachers. We welcome all the PhD and MA students to participate actively in these TRIP sessions. Communication channel The project currently has its own Moodle webpage which is a useful arena for members to share ideas and pass on information that others may find useful or interesting. Any member can also post a message in the forum of the Project Tutor Quiron in Moodle with any aspect of language/linguistics/literature/film and cultural studies. The Moodle webpage of the project is also the channel by which notices about the TRIP Seminars and other research/social events are circulated, so it is important if you want to be kept informed that you are subscribed as a participant in the project. Contact For more information on the project: Tutor Quiron presentation video: http://vimeo.com/69475789 Or email: llantada@unizar.es (Teachers Coordinator) spellice@unizar.es (Mentors Coordinator) 4

The Forum is also the channel by which notices about the TRIP seminars and other research/social events are circulated, so it is important if you want to be kept informed that you are subscribed as a participant in the project. If you would like to be subscribed, please contact the TRIP Representatives, Silvia Pellicer at spellice@unizar.es or Oana Carciu at ocarciu@unizar.es. TRIP Profile Form Information What is the TRIP Directory? The TRIP Directory lists postgraduate students engaged in research in the Department of English at the University of Zaragoza. The entries comprise the names and research details of students currently registered for higher degrees (MA and PhD). Why should I complete a Profile Form? To raise your public profile, which is beneficial in terms of future employment and academic standing and conveys your willingness to engage with others. By filling out this form, you provide an improved capability for PG TRIP members to search, network and collaborate other members. What if I m not sure what to write? A sample profile (Maria Perez Perez) has been completed (refer to TRIP Documents on Moodle) to give a basic idea of what information you should provide. Don t worry if you re a brand new or still unsure first year student this form is not written in stone; you will have future opportunities to amend and/or alter your information if necessary. However, if you change your mind after submitting the profile form and no longer wish your profile to be included, please let us know. When do I need to complete the form? We would greatly appreciate the forms being completed and sent via email to either Silvia Pellicer (spellice@unizar.es) or Oana Carciu (ocarciu@unizar.es). Where will the information on my form be posted? The information you provide will be made available in the Moodle page of the Proyecto Tutor Quiron and wherever it is appropriate to do so for project members (i.e. maybe the web page of the department, other suggestions are welcome). Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Contact either Silvia Pellicer (spellice@unizar.es) or Oana Carciu (ocarciu@unizar.es) 14
