1 Postgraduate Studies MASTER S (2ND CYCLE) PROGRAM IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING (ELT) The Faculty of Pedagogical and Methodological Training will offer a 2nd cycle degree course of study leading to a Masters Degree in English Language Teaching (ELT). I. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM The aim of the program is to equip students with a solid background in methodological theory and the skills needed to apply that theory in their teaching practice. Selection of the overall focus of the curriculum and the individual courses contained therein directly reflects what is currently generally accepted about the nature of second language acquisition, along with a clear, honest recognition of local and regional teaching needs and realities. As the program is primarily designed for non-native speakers of English, there is a component of advanced English language study, with a particular emphasis on academic reading and writing. There is a strong component of research throughout (qualitative and quantitative), academic, as well as action research conducted in the classroom itself. II. LEARNING OUTCOMES The graduates from the SEEU MA in ELT will hold a degree currently unattainable anywhere else in the region. Since the program is modeled on the best American and British MA programs, yet adapted to regional needs and circumstances, it is anticipated that graduates will be in demand to not only teach but also help train the next generation of English language teachers. Also, because the degree is international in nature, it will improve graduates chances of finding employment with international organizations, here and abroad, along with qualifying them for admittance to Ph.D. programs in English language teaching. III. PROGRAM AND CURRICULUM DESCRIPTION The 2nd Cycle Program in ELT will be composed of 90 ECST credits and be taught fulltime over the course of three semesters (30 credits each). The program is composed of five core courses each of the first two semesters and thesis work in the final, third semester. Semester 1 1

Admission Requirements In addition to general SEEU 2nd cycle program requirements, the perspective student must have: 1) 1st cycle (Bachelor Degree) in English Language, Foreign Languages, Communication, Pedagogy, Philology and related fields) 2) Excellent English proficiency (TOEFL 580 paper based/237 computer based; IELTS 6.5) 3) Basic computing skills: knowledge of popular software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) 4) Undergraduate GPA greater then 8.0 preferred 5) Approval from the Admission committee (Students with degrees in other disciplines may be required to take undergraduate prerequisites as part of their program). For those who come close but do not meet the minimum requirements for admission to the MA in TEFL program, a summer program will be available (at extra charge) to help them attain the minimum qualification. 2
3 MA ENGLISH TEACHING ENGLISH (ELT) SEMESTER I 1. Foreign Language Teaching Methodology and Practise 6 credits Brief Course Outline: A study of the main foreign language teaching from Grammar- Translation through the Communicative Approaches with a strong emphasis on practical applications of English Language Teaching methodologies. 2. Teaching Grammar 6 credits Brief Course Outline: A practical approach in innovative methodologies and strategies in the teaching of grammar, from pattern practises to consciousness raising techniques. 3. Research Methodology 6 credits Brief Course Outline: A study of research design and methods including sampling, hypothesis formation, testing and experimental research. Throughout this course, students will learn to develop the research skills necessary to create, implement and successfully complete a substantial research project. 4. Pedagogical Writing 6 credits Brief Course Outline: This course will examine current methods of teaching writing in foreign language classrooms. Particular attention will be paid to the concept of product versus product oriented approaches. 5. Teaching Vocabulary 6 credits Brief Course Outline: This course will trace the rebirth of this exciting field through an examination of its historical roots and the multidisciplinary sources from which it draws. It also will explore a range of efficient and practical strategies for helping students to master high-frequency vocabulary for conversation, academic study, and the vocations. 3
4 MA in ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING (ETFL) SEMESTER II 1. Second Language Acquisition and Learning 6 credits Brief Course Outline: A study of the psycholinguistic aspects of second and foreign language teaching in the classroom and environment. 2. English for Specific Purposes 6 credits Brief Course Outline: Students will develop a critical awareness and understanding of the principles and practice of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), as well as the knowledge and skills to negotiate and manage the design and implementation of effective courses ESP in a range of contexts. 3. C.A.L.L. (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) 6 credits Brief Course Outline: This course is intended to give participants a broad general view of computer-enhanced language teaching and learning. It will involve participants in exploring a working theory of language learning environments, using and discussing existing and potential applications of computer technology in the language classroom, and creating projects to use and test knowledge gained through reading, discussion, and hands-on experience. 4. Issues in ELT 6 credits Brief Course Outline: This is not a single course but a series of lectures and seminars on topics and trends in English Language Teaching. Cutting-edge issues such as Critical Thinking in ELT, Multiple Intelligences, Using Literature in ELT, Teaching Young Learners, Task Based Learning, Error Correction, Genre Recognition, Individual Differences, Assessment, etc. will be taught by distinguished guest scholars. 5. Masters Thesis Writing Seminar 6 credits Brief Course Outline: A practical course in the writing of a Master s Thesis. This will include, among others, how to research, how to select and use a style sheet, correct formatting and how to avoid plagiarizing. 4
