It is assumed that you have a basic understanding of modems and their operation, are knowledgeable about data communications, and are familiar with Windows terminology and conventions. Introduction 1 What is the Remote Monitor Feature? The COMSPHERE 6700 Series NMS Remote Monitor feature provides innovative management support for the DSU, Dial, and APL family of modems in a client/server environment. The 6700 Remote Monitor feature provides the capability to monitor and perform diagnostics from a client workstation on devices defined in other 6700 servers. Prior to this feature, the client workstation could only be connected to one server known as the Active Server. The Remote Monitor feature provides the user with the ability to monitor Alerts, Calls, and Security Events. Status Server device profiles can also be viewed. Feature List In addition to all the features of the 6700 Series NMS, the Remote Monitor feature provides the following capabilities: Platform/Network Performance Monitoring Knowledge of more than one NMS server User-selectable active NMS server The interface between the client and the server is accomplished via a TCP/IP communication stack. Installation and Setup 2 Getting Started This chapter provides procedures for the Remote Monitor feature installation. Please check that your Remote Monitor feature package includes the following in addition to this manual: Remote Monitor server software on one or more 3 1/2 disks One Software Abstract Prerequisites Before you install the software, verify that you have met the recommended hardware and software prerequisites. Hardware Prerequisites The following are the hardware requirements for installation of the Remote Monitor feature server and client software: 486 Series, 66 MHz or higher PC (or compatible computer) 16 MB of RAM (32 MB of RAM is recommended) Hard disk with 15 MB of free space and a minimum of 14 ms access time Super VGA (800 x 600 resolution) or higher with 256 colors Video accelerator card 6700-A2-GB23-10 October 1998 2-1

Installation and Setup Software Prerequisites You must have the following software installed before you install the Remote Monitor feature on your 6700 NMS servers or clients: COMSPHERE 6700 Series Network Management System NMS 5.0.2 or higher with Windows 95 or Windows NT NMS 4.0.9 or higher with MS-DOS Release 3.3 or higher COMSPHERE 6700 Series NMS Multiuser Feature COMSPHERE 6700 Series NMS Network Configuration Feature Network interface: NDIS-compliant and NDIS driver, or Open Data-Link Interface (ODI) and ODI network adapter (Ethernet, FDDI, token ring, etc.), or Additional serial port (PPP, SLIP, or CSLIP) Installation Procedure The Remote Monitor feature software must be installed on all 6700 NMS servers and clients. To install the Remote Monitor feature server or client software, start from the Program Manager window. NOTE: NMS is designed to be the primary application program running on a personal computer. If you use NMS with other applications, it is your responsibility to ensure compatibility. The following procedure refers to Drive A. Use the disk drive that is appropriate for your PC. Procedure 1. Insert Disk #1 into Drive A. 2. From the Program Manager window, if you are running: Windows 3.1, choose Run from the File menu. Windows 95 or Windows NT, choose the Start button and then Run. 3. In the Command Line field, type A:\INSTALL. 2-2 October 1998 6700-A2-GB23-10

Installation and Setup 4. Choose OK. The Welcome window appears. 5. Choose Continue. The Product Information window appears. 6. Choose Yes. The Destination Directory window appears. The Destination Directory window allows you to place the NMS software into a specific directory. A single directory within a single partition is required. Enter a subdirectory location or choose the default setting of C:\PCNMS. 6700-A2-GB23-10 October 1998 2-3

Installation and Setup 7. Choose Continue. The Confirmation window appears. 8. Choose Install to confirm the installation of the NMS software into the specified directory. The Completion status window appears. This window displays a bar indicating the percentage of completion for the current installation. In addition, the names of the files being installed appear above the bar until the installation is complete. 9. The Remote Monitor icon is created and the Installation Completed! window appears. 2-4 October 1998 6700-A2-GB23-10

Network Configuration 3 Remote Monitor Network Configuration The Remote Monitor network configuration feature allows the user to select the Active Server, Inactive servers, and Status Only servers. This can only be accomplished when the NMS is not active. To access the Remote Monitor feature, double-click on the Network Configuration icon in COMSPHERE 6700 NMS. 6700-A2-GB23-10 October 1998 3-1

Network Configuration Changes to the status of a server can only be accomplished when the NMS is not active. Procedure To change the status of a server: 1. From the WorkStation menu, select the Active Server menu item. 2. The Active Server window appears. Each server appears with a current status of Active, InActive, or Status (Only). The Status Only button toggles to Inactive when a Status Only or Active Server is selected. Allowable server status changes are listed in the following table. If the Status is... Then the server can be changed to... Active InActive InActive Status Only Status Only Status Only using the Status Only button. Active using the OK button. Status Only using the Status Only button. Network Configuration 3. To change a server from Active or Inactive to Status Only: Select the appropriate server entry. Press the Status Only button. To change a server from Inactive or Status Only to Active: Select the appropriate server entry. Press the OK button. The window closes. To change a server from Status Only to InActive: Select the appropriate server entry. Press the InActive button. NOTE: Only one server can be connected and active with full features. 6700-A2-GB23-10 October 1998 3-3

Network Configuration Remote Status Servers Upon execution of the 6700 NMS, the Remote Status Servers task will be executed and the window will be minimized. The window will provide the current status of each: Remote Status Server s monitor, and Remote Status Server s connection. If a monitor has been closed, the monitor can be opened either by: Receiving a status message from the server, or Selecting the entry from the Remote Status Monitors list and pressing the Start Monitor button. If a monitor is minimized and status information is received, the minimized icon will flash until the user restores the minimized icon. If a status server connection was shutdown, the connection can be reopened after the server has been brought up. Procedure To reopen a status server connection: 1. Bring up the server. 2. Select the entry from the Remote Status Connections list. 3. Press the Open Connection button. After synchronization (up to 3 minutes) is accomplished, the remote status monitor for the opened server will be executed. 3-4 October 1998 6700-A2-GB23-10

Network Configuration Remote Status Monitors The remote status monitor gives the user the ability to monitor Alerts, Call Statistics, Events, and Device profiles from a Status Server. When a remote status monitor is started, the name of the status server will be appended to the window title. The user can view the various monitors by selecting the appropriate monitor from the Monitors menu. The Alert, Call Statistics, and Event monitors have the ability to perform various types of Actions. When a device(s) is selected, the appropriate action is enabled. The user can either Clear, Acknowledge, or Disconnect an alert, call, or event. Each monitor can be sorted in various ways. The Sorts menu item will be enabled after selecting a monitor. The current sorting selection will contain a check mark () to the left of the sort item. In the following example, Device Name is the current selection. When a user selects a device from either the Alert monitor or the Devices monitor, the appropriate test menu items will be enabled. 6700-A2-GB23-10 October 1998 3-5

Network Configuration Upon selection of a test, the same test window as described in the Device Management function will be displayed with the selected device s name in the title. However, if a device contains multiple ports, the port selection drop down list will be displayed within the test window, allowing the user to select the appropriate port. When a user selects a device from either the Alert monitor or the Devices monitor, the appropriate command menu items will be enabled. Upon selection of a command, the same command window as described in the Device Management function will be displayed with the selected device s name in the title. However, if a device contains multiple ports and the command has the ability to be performed on a port, the port selection dialog window will be displayed, allowing the user to select the appropriate port. 3-6 October 1998 6700-A2-GB23-10

Network Configuration The window menu gives the user the ability to manage the current windows being displayed. If the menu item selected is... Then all windows... Cascade Tile Arrange Icons Close All Windows Will be displayed one on top of each other in a stagger fashion. Will be displayed side by side.
