Creating DCE Submaps 4 Why Create DCE Submaps? Use DCE submaps to create a new set of submaps to help you picture the organization of your AT&T Paradyne DCE devices that are managed by the AT&T DCE Manager. It is important for device monitoring to be able to see the relationships among the sites, cabinets, carriers and cards in your network. You can create submaps based on both physical and logical relationships between the devices. Create DCE submaps based on: Device function (such as all CSUs) Geographic location (such as all devices located at one site) Network layout (such as devices connected physically or logically) Corporate organization (such as devices belonging to System Administrators) Methods of Creating Submaps HP OpenView creates hierarchical submaps during its layout operation based on the devices network addresses. The AT&T DCE Manager for HP OpenView for Windows product gives you the capability of adding to these submaps in two different ways: Connectivity submaps The HP OpenView submap default does not show the physical connectivity of the devices in the network. However, HP OpenView does provide a feature that allows you to create connectivity submaps. Once you create DCE connectivity submaps, the AT&T DCE Manager enables you to find these submaps using the Connectivity application. Issue 1 January

Creating DCE Submaps DCE SITES submaps The HP OpenView submap default does not show the geographical hierarchy of the devices in the network. The AT&T DCE Manager enables you to create submaps based on geographical hierarchy by using the User Sites application. NOTES: It is recommended that you use the User Sites application to tell the AT&T DCE Manager where to place 3100 Series cards into a 3000 Series Carrier. This information that you enter via User Sites is used by the Device View application to accurately display the carrier view. Only use the User Sites application to modify the DCE SITES submaps that you have created. If you make changes to these submaps using any other means, your changes may be lost the next time you use the User Sites application. Creating HP OpenView Network Submaps Using Autodiscovery Before you create a submap, the devices must be autodiscovered by HP OpenView. During autodiscovery, the ALL NETS submap is created which contains a list of submaps, one for each network containing discovered devices. Refer to your HP OpenView manual for more information on the Autodiscovery feature. NOTE: Do not rename the ALL NETS submap or the User Sites application will not work correctly. Viewing a List of Submaps You use the AT&T DCE Manager to create, change, and view a list of DCE SITES submaps. You view submaps themselves using HP OpenView. To view a hierarchical list of both the HP OpenView submaps and the AT&T DCE Manager submaps, use the User Sites window (see User Sites Window). The ALLNETS submap list consists of all discovered devices in the HP OpenView network. The DCE SITE submap list consists of all submaps that have been created for devices by the AT&T DCE Manager. If no DCE SITES submaps currently exist, the Sites section of the User Sites window is blank except for the DCE Sites site name. DCE SITES will always be the name of the first hierarchical site. See Creating and Changing the DCE Submap List if no submaps currently exist. 4-2 Issue 1 January 1996

Creating DCE Submaps User Sites Window The User Sites window allows you to create submaps by placing device and site icons in their appropriate hierarchical location in a hierarchical list of submaps. Use the User Sites window to create, change and display the DCE SITES submap list. The User Sites Window also displays the HP OpenView submap list of all discovered devices in the network. Access the User Sites application from: The AT&T DCE Manager pull-down menu The User Sites window appears. Discovered Devices section for HP OpenView submap names Icons section Sites section for DCE submap site names AT&T Paradyne DCE site and device names are displayed here HP Openview submap names are displayed here Issue 1 January

Creating DCE Submaps Submap Icons The submap names are listed hierarchically next to icons that represent their type (see the following table). 47 Creating DCE Submaps The following example places a carrier onto a DCE site. Drag icon onto DCE site Name the icon Name appears in DCE SITES section Issue 1 January

Creating DCE Submaps Connecting Devices Connect devices in your submap to show a relationship between devices using the standard HP OpenView Connectivity feature. This relationship can be physical or logical. Be sure that you connect all supported devices to another object. Connectivity is used to identify the remote device to be selected for various device tests, such as Remote Line Loopback. See Chapter 7, Fault Isolation, for more information. Procedure To create connectivity maps for your devices using the HP OpenView commands: 1. Use the Edit >New Submap command to create a new submap. 2. Cut/paste DCE devices into the new submap. 3. Use Edit > Add to add connection lines. Be sure to use the Connections button, or the connection will not be recognized. You must connect devices before they will appear in the Test application s remote Device Selection List box. See Device Selection List in Chapter 3, User Interface Conventions, for more information. NOTE: Do not use connectivity on the submaps created by the DCE Manager User Sites application since these connections will be deleted the next time that you request User Sites. Displaying DCE Submaps To display DCE submaps, use the standard HP OpenView feature of double-clicking on compound icons in submaps. Displaying DCE SITES submaps allows you to monitor DCE devices based on geographical view. For example, when a device is in alert, all of its parent site, cabinet, and/or carrier objects will show the most severe alarm color. See Chapter 6, Monitoring Devices, for more information Issue 1 January 1996

Creating DCE Submaps The following is an example of displaying a DCE SITES submap using HP OpenView. Viewing DCE Devices Based on Connectivity Use the Connectivity application to find connectivity maps based on the selected DCE device. Access the Connectivity application from either: The AT&T DCE Manager menu on the pull-down menu, or The Application menu on a specific window Issue 1 January

Creating DCE Submaps The AT&T DCE Manager examines each submap for the selected device. If the selected device... Then... Has a connection on one submap Is located on more than one submap That submap appears. A list box appears asking you to select which submap to display. Select submap to display and click on OK, or double-click on selection 4-12 Issue 1 January 1996

Configuring Your Device 5 Hardware and Software Device Configuration The AT&T DCE Manager receives hardware device configuration information, such as what interfaces are currently supported in the device: The first time that you request an application for that device Every time that you select the Device Sync application Three AT&T DCE Manager applications enable you to set software configuration information for your DCE devices: Device Options Switch Configurations Channel Configuration Collecting Device Hardware Configuration Information The first time that you open a AT&T DCE Manager application on a discovered device, the AT&T DCE Manager interrogates the device for its hardware configuration. A dialog box appears to let you know that a synchronization is in progress to collect this information. Issue 1 January
