The SLSP is the nly library-science-supervisr prgram apprved by the Pennsylvania Department f Educatin in the Cmmnwealth. The SLSP is a specializatin within the Certificate f Advanced Study prgram. It was first apprved by the PDE in the early 1970s. Qualificatins Applicants must hld a valid Pennsylvania Instructinal I r II certificate in Library Science, K-12, and have five years f successful experience wrking as a schl librarian.

Applicants must have earned a minimum grade pint average (GPA) f 3.0 in a MLIS prgram t be admitted t the CAS prgram, and the students must maintain a GPA f at least 3.0 each term t cntinue in the prgram. SLSP candidates cmplete a 24-credit curse f study that fcuses n the teaching-learning prcess and the management f library resurces in a district-wide setting. The prgram includes required curses in bth the Library and Infrmatin Science Prgram f the Schl f Infrmatin Sciences and the Schl Leadership Develpment specializatin in the Schl f Educatin. Upn cmpletin f the prgram, graduates are recmmended t the Pennsylvania Department f Educatin fr the Library Science Supervisr certificatin and receive the Certificate f Advanced Study frm the University f Pittsburgh Schl f Infrmatin Sciences. When can I apply? SLSP applicants may be admitted t the SLSP each term (fall, spring, and summer) upn the decisin f the DLIS Admissins and Review Cmmittee. Students may pursue either full-time r part-time study t cmplete the 24-credit certificate. Upn admissin, the student is matched with the SLSP Directr as an advisr and tgether a plan f study is prepared which will lead t the cmpletin f the certificate prgram. Hw lng d I have t cmplete the prgram? The faculty f the Library and Infrmatin Science Prgram has set a fur-year statute f limitatin fr the cmpletin f the Certificate f Advanced Study (CAS). This fur-year statute f limitatin is measured frm the time f the first class taken until cmpletin, and it is explained in print and Webbased infrmatin fr bth ptential applicants and students. The SLSP requires the successful cmpletin f 24 credits, which can be cmpleted in tw terms f full-time study (at 12 credits per term), r up t fur years f part-time study (at ne curse per term). The SLSP Practicum Experience The Practicum experience is the capstne experience f the SLSP and cnstitutes a ttal f 360 hurs r apprximately 48 days (@ 7.5 hurs per day) f management experience in a district-level library-media prgram under the guidance f a Cperating Library Supervisr. This requirement meets the PDE Supervisr f Library Science Guidelines (Single Area), which require 360 hurs. It is expected that students will cmplete the majrity f this practicum experience ver a Summer Term when they are nt emplyed; they may, hwever, arrange t cmplete at least a prtin f the Practicum during the schl year depending upn schedules. Evaluatin f student perfrmance during the Practicum is an imprtant cmpnent in helping students measure mastery f cmpetencies and evaluate ptential fr success in a supervisry psitin at the district level. The Cperating Library Supervisr evaluates the student twice during the experience, nce at midpint in a frmative appraisal and nce at the cnclusin as a summative appraisal.

The student als cmpletes a frmative and summative self-appraisal. The Cperating Library Supervisr and the student meet in cnference t review their appraisals and assess student prgress. They determine if and hw the student is prgressing tward develping cmpetencies. Tgether they prepare a plan f actin fr the student t wrk tward mastery and/r t identify any areas that may need imprving r mre develpment. The SLSP Directr bserves the student in the practicum setting and cmpletes an appraisal based n that bservatin. Requirements T be recmmended fr the Library Science Supervisr certificatin by the University, each SLSP candidate must cmplete the required 21 credits f cursewrk identified n the "Planning Yur Prgram" advising sheet with an verall GPA f at least 3.0, while maintaining a GPA f at least 3.0 thrughut the prgram. Fr the additinal three required credits, the candidate must als earn a "Satisfactry" grade in LIS 2923: Practicum in Schl District Library Media Center Prgrams. Prgram f Study SLSP candidates must successfully cmplete twenty-ne credits f cursewrk (7 curses) and three credits f Practicum. Students must successfully cmplete fur curses and a Practicum in the Library and Infrmatin Science Prgram that build specific skills in the areas f management, infrmatin-technlgy deplyment, actin research, prfessinalism, and cllabratin t imprve student learning. The SLSP ffers students a cmpetency-based curriculum, mdeled n the PDE Supervisr f Library Science Single Guidelines (Guidelines).
