Preface Hi, my name is Carina and I m the author of this guide to help you find your dream course in events! I graduated in 2013 with a MA in Events from Edinburgh Napier University and have been working full time in the event industry since May 2013 now. Not so long ago I started thinking about how difficult it was to choose the right course that led me to where I am today. I had really a hard time trying to find the right university and course. It took me months to go through the huge selection of courses out there, and I was afraid of missing out on the one course that suited all my needs. I know how much of a pain it can be going to each university website and trying to compare all their course information. Plus, most of these websites are totally confusing and poorly updated. This got me thinking -- maybe I could help prospective students who are looking to apply for courses in Events Management, by drastically reducing all the time end effort it takes to choose one. So, in order to make this whole process easier for future students, like you I created this guide which gives you all the information you need in one single, easy to read document. I know there is plenty of other stuff you need to do before student life is getting started, and I can guarantee this guide will save you both time and nerves! Wherever you will go, I hope you enjoy your student days and maybe we will meet someday at an event! Carina 4 Copyright Carina William

Introduction Every course in event management available in the entire Scottish region is included. Some courses may be far better than others but ALL courses have been included in order to give you a clear overview of what is available. Firstly, I take you through the process of how to apply for an undergraduate course in Scotland and then talk a little about what to expect from life in general in Scotland. Then, I get straight down to the various courses available. Each chapter deals with different benefits and drawbacks of each course and university. Next to a detailed description of every course, you will also find its entry requirements and tuition fees. Additionally, I talk a bit about the city to give you an idea of living costs and if it s the right place for you. At the end of this guide, you will find a list with the most important links for you to start your university life. All star ratings in this guide are based on online student reviews, personal interviews, university websites and professional sources such as The Guardian and The Times newspapers. 5 Copyright Carina William

Why study in Scotland? When I first thought about studying in Scotland images of kilts, sheep and bagpipes, popped into my mind, but Scotland has plenty more to offer than that. It has a great arts and culture scene, plenty of sport facilities, and a proud history of university education. Most of Scotland s universities have state of the art campuses equipped with the latest technologies and very strong industry links from which you can benefit from their connections to other universities and companies all over the world. This is perfect if you want to study abroad and see the world during your studies. I am not a big nature lover, but I was overwhelmed of the stunning landscapes in Scotland. If you choose to study there, I highly recommend you to rent a car and make a trip to the Highlands; it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. When I arrived in Scotland for my studies, I was impressed by how warm, open and welcoming Scottish people are. I found it easier to make friends than in every other country I ve been to. If your native language is not English, it will probably take a week or so to get used to the Scottish accent, but most lecturers at universities have only a slight accent, so it s easy to understand them. Here are some key facts why Scotland is a great place to study: Graduates from Scottish universities have the highest rate of employment or further study in the UK. The highest rates of student satisfaction in quality of teaching in the UK. Over 30,000 people from more than 180 countries choose to study in Scotland every year. 6 Copyright Carina William

STUDY IN GLASGOW Living in Glasgow In the past people might have described Glasgow as grey, depressed and dominated by high-rise flats. However, today Glasgow is a modern city with a vibrating music scene and nightlife. It is also the city of shopping with big malls and small boutiques and there is a great choice of restaurants. Unfortunately, a big motorway runs straight through the city, which can cause traffic and noise. 27 Copyright Carina William

GLASGOW CALEDONIAN UNIVERSITY Glasgow Caledonian University is an innovative and multi-award winning university. It's proximity to the city centre allow a busy social scene and excellent transport links. It also offers a fantastic, large library with a big study area, great student accommodation and fitness facilities. The university offers students opportunities to study abroad as well as bringing in international guest lecturers from time to time. Studying at GCU means you ll get to enjoy small class sizes, which are ideal for working on group projects. 28 Copyright Carina William

Courses Glasgow Caledonian University BA (Hons) International Events Management (subject to approval) 2014 will be the first year of this new course. I would recommend you wait until other students have reviewed the quality of this course and give the university some time to improve their modules. However, Glasgow Caledonian University has a good reputation and it is very likely that this course will fulfil its promises. During the first year of the course you will get a good understanding of event management theory. In year two, theory is put into practice and you will create event concepts, present your ideas in pitches to business clients and run your own events. You will also get a deeper understanding of event strategy and global impacts of events. Additionally, you will gain a good insight in the industry and how businesses are running by studying selected business modules. Before you graduate the uni will prepare you for the job hunt with application training.
