5 Preface Hi, my name is Carina and I m the author of this guide to help you find your dream course in events! I graduated in 2013 with a MA in Events from Edinburgh Napier University and have been working full time as a project manager for an event agency since May Not so long ago I started thinking about how difficult it was to choose the right course that led me to where I am today. I had really a hard time trying to find the right university and course, and it took me months to go through the huge selection of courses out there. In short, I was afraid of missing out on the one course that suited all my needs. I know how much of a pain it can be going to each university website and trying to compare all their course information. And let s be honest, most of these websites are quite confusing and poorly updated. So, in order to make this whole process easier for future students like you, I created this guide, which gives you all the information you need in one single, easy to read document. I know there is plenty of other stuff you need to do before student life gets started, and I can guarantee this guide will save you both time and nerves! Wherever you will go, I hope you enjoy your student days and maybe we will meet someday at an event! Carina 4

6 Introduction Some courses may be better than others but ALL Event Management courses are described in detail in order to give you a clear overview of what is available. Firstly, I will talk about what it s like to study in England s capital and what you can expect if you decide to study there. I will also give you an idea of the costs of living and more background info about the quality of living in London. Then, I get straight down to the various courses available, and each chapter deals with different benefits and drawbacks of each course and university. I visited most of these universities myself; talked to the students and lecturers in order to find out which university is really a great place to study and how this course will prepare you for a career in events. All star ratings in this guide are based on personal interviews with students and lecturers, student reviews, and professional sources such as The Guardian and The Times newspapers. You will also find inside the entry requirements and tuition fees for each university and course. At the end of the guide, I take you through the process of how to apply for an undergraduate course in London, followed by a list of resources to help start university life. 5

7 WHY STUDY IN LONDON? London is the most visited city in Europe with millions of tourists every year. It is also extremely popular city for students and this is not without a reason: 5 Living in London is like being a kid in a candy store. It doesn t matter what your taste and interests are, 5 4 the city will offer it. If you want to live like a cool hipster, party animal, a creative artist or an extreme sport athlete you will definitely find everything you need and lots of people who share your interests. The nightlife will totally blow you away and, if you like, you can go out every day of the week. If you are into alternative bands, well-known DJs, classic concerts or Elton John - you will probably be able to see them live, as every artist who tours will play in London with 99% certainty. Please be warned: going out in London can be pretty pricy! 6

8 In general, London is a very expensive city and you will pay a lot for your rent, pubs, clubs and restaurants. So, maybe, you might need a part time job, of which London has plenty to offer. It is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world. The city has a rich culture with plenty of theatres, cinemas, beautiful parks, exhibitions, shopping centres, vintage markets and of course millions of events. The events industry contributes about 36 billion to the British economy, and most of the companies and professionals are based in London. Living here, you will be able to learn from the best practitioners and see the latest trends. So, if you want to build a network to boost your career in events, London is definitely the place to be. The capital has plenty of opportunities to gain experience in event management during your studies. Please make sure you re using your time wisely: - get a part-time job working in the event industry or related industries - get internships - do voluntary work. 7

10 The UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS LONDON The Live Events and Television course is located at the London College of Communication Campus of the University of the Arts, which is at Elephant & Castle in South London. The first impression of Elephant & Castle can be a bit dirty and run-down, but if you take a close look, you will actually see that this area is safe and also welllocated. Some people see Elephant & Castle as an upcoming and vibrant area of London, and it is a very short distance from Central London and also very close to Kennington, which is a nice and popular area to live. On the way from the underground to the university, there is a big street market where people from all over the world sell all kind of products. However, the campus may not be ideally placed for some as it s right next to a large, busy roundabout and the market itself is pretty scruffy and dated. 9

11 It depends what place to study you have in mind for your future. If you want to study in a busy, multi-cultural and energetic area then the campus on Elephant & Castle will be a great choice for you. Once you have entered the campus, you will be surprised at how spacious and modern the interior is. The university is the largest arts and design university in Europe and offers plenty of gallery space for artists and students, among very open and modern architecture. This gives the campus a great and unique atmosphere. 4 4 Student accommodations are also available from 96 to 254 a week, including internet access. The university provides 3,027 places in 12 residences across London. Non-EU students, disabled students and students under 18 at the start of their course, are given priority. The university is very focused on practicality and your tutors will be experts currently working in their respective fields. Their technical skills, knowledge and enthusiasm will help you get the best from your studies. This is also reflected in its facilities, which will help you to gain hands-on experience. For instance, TV studios, workshops, media suites, galleries, modern IT facilities, group working spaces, richly stocked library, catwalk venues and theatre spaces are on campus. 28

12 Due to the university s strong industry links and partner organisations you will get the chance to work on live projects throughout your studies and gain valuable contacts and insights to the events industry. The Course - BA (Hons) Live Events and Television This course is the best choice for you if you are looking for a very hands-on course that enables you to manage the production and management of festivals and events. At the end of the course you will know how to create and transform environments for live events and television. In each year of your studies there will be regular visits from industry guest lecturers. You ll get a good knowledge about the application of key event management concepts, approaches and techniques to enable you to enter a professional career in events management. Year 1 will introduce you to the production for live events and television. You will learn creative and technical crafts, analyse various studies about social and cultural influences, historical moments and changing patterns. The second year offers the opportunity to use and further develop your skills, focus on 29

13 practice, select and experiment in a specialist area of study in preparation for the major project in year 3. In this year, you will learn how to design and create concepts for events in relation to industry standards. The university encourages you to put your skills into practice and find an internship. Previous students had internships at various major companies, including Olympics 2012, Clarion Events, Lesley Goring Fashion Promotions, the royal wedding, Escape Festival (Brighton) and Rock of Ages (Palace Theatre, London). Year 3 offers you the chance to deepen your focus and to further develop your skills across the live event and television industry. Projects are designed to support and develop your ability to analyse and interpret, while also enhancing your task management and team working skills. 15 Entry Requirements Entry to this course is highly competitive. Applicants are normally expected to achieve, or already have, the course entry requirements detailed below. Applicants with some, or all, of the following achievements will be considered for admission to the programme: GCSE Edexcel GNVQ Access Certificate Experience UCAS tariff points English language requirements Two (or more) A-Level/AVCE passes with at least three GCSE passes (A-C) An Edexcel GNVQ at advanced level (or equivalent) at merit level An Access Certificate recognised by the National Open College Network Accreditation of previous experience or employment (APEL) This course requires a minimum 160 UCAS tariff points. The standard English Language requirement for entry is IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in any one paper, or equivalent. Exceptionally, applicants who do not meet these course entry requirements may still be considered if the course team judges the application demonstrates additional strengths and alternative evidence. This might be demonstrated, for example, by related academic or work experience, the quality of the personal statement, a strong academic or other professional reference or a combination of these factors. Applicants may be asked to attend an interview. 14
