Using Remote Desktop to access your MTSU class account To remotely access certain systems at MTSU such as ranger you may use Microsoft's remote desktop software. Requirements: 1. high speed internet connection such as DSL (BellSouth) or cable modem(comcast) 2. Microsoft's remote desktop client 3. MTSU account information Microsoft's Remote Desktop Client The remote desktop client software comes standard with the Window XP system. To run it, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click Communications, and then click Remote Desktop Connection. This software package can also be found on the Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition product CDs and can be installed on any supported Windows platform. To install from the CD, insert the disc into the target machine's CD-ROM drive, select Perform Additional Tasks, and then click Install Remote Desktop Connection. The remote desktop client software is also available for the Macintosh. See http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=remotedesktopclient Starting Remote Desktop To start the remote desktop client on a windows XP system, please refer to the above or http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/getstarted/starteremote.mspx To remotely access ranger for usage in 1170 First we will log into a system at MTSU using remote desktop; this system has the name shemp.cs.mtsu.edu. We will use this system and your MTSU ranger account to remotely access ranger. Bring up your remote desktop client, Now enter the computer system name shemp.cs.mtsu.edu and click Connect.

If your Internet connection and remote desktop client are correct, then you should see the following window (this may take a minute to pop up). If you do not see the above window, then see below for trouble shooting. In order for you to access shemp, your ranger account information must have been configured on shemp. Normally this just means that your course instructor has asked the person in charge of the shemp system to add your ranger account to the list of accounts allowed to remotely access shemp.

Enter your ranger account information in the remote desktop logon window. You must use the original password associated with the account. BEFORE clicking ok, make sure you have the menu box, Log on to: appearing in your login screen. If it does not appear, then click on the Options>> button. For the Log on to: enter CS. The figure below shows what you should see.

Now click OK. If you are succesful in logging in, your window/desktop should be similar to the one that follows:

You may now use the gnome icon to access ranger using your ranger account number and password. Trouble Shooting I do not get the shemp log in screen. 1. check to see if you have Internet access by trying to access MTSU's home page, www.mtsu.edu 2. If you have access to MTSU's home page, make sure you have the system name correct shemp.cs.mtsu.edu 3. Make sure you have do not have any previously set remote desktop options set. On the Remote Desktop Connection window, click the Options>> button.

Make sure the User name is blank as well as the Password are blank. If they are not blank, then erase the contents. I get the shemp log in window, but I cannot log in to shemp. 4. If you are succesful in getting the shemp log in screen, but are not able to log in using your account and password, then perhaps you instructor has not asked for you ranger account to be added to the list of shemp accounts. Check with your instructor. 5. If your account is valid for shemp, then perhaps you are using the wrong password. The password must be the password that you used to log into ranger the very first time of the semester. If you later changed your ranger password, then shemp is still using your old password and not the one you changed to. You must use this old/original password to access shemp.
