College-Based ESOL and Teacher Training 2016/17 courses
COLLEGE-BASED ESOL AND TEACHER TRAINING We offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other languages (TESOL) courses at Edinburgh College. If English is not your first language, you can study ESOL courses full time, part time and in the evening. You will learn the language skills you need to live and work in any English-speaking country. Students study for Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) ESOL qualifications recognised nationally and worldwide. Our courses prepare you for English language tests, such as IELTS and Cambridge certificates (CAE, FCE). In some classes you can study other subjects with ESOL, such as business, tourism and IT. We also run an English Language Summer School that takes place in July and August, during the Edinburgh Festival. Some of our courses also include a work placement in an organisation to help improve your language skills further. Our TESOL courses cover methods and classroom techniques you need to teach second language learners. You can study pre- and in-service teacher training qualifications that lead to Cambridge or SQA certificates. We also design bespoke programmes for groups covering any level or area of teacher training. SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS AGED 16-18 OUR FACILITIES All 16 18 year olds are given a 24-hour emergency number. Information on Keeping yourself safe in Edinburgh is provided at induction. A tutorial system is in place for students to discuss progress or any problems with their teacher. Students are supervised in class, on class trips/activities and during work placement. Parental consent is required for class trips and work placements. Outside these activities there is no supervision of 16-18 year olds. In addition to the main college facilities of libraries, online resources and student support, the ESOL Centre offers classrooms which are smart-board equipped. We use specialist software and a wide range of materials and resources to provide the best language learning experience for our students. 01 Edinburgh College College-based ESOL and Teacher Training 02
COLLEGE-BASED ESOL AND TEACHER TRAINING ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMMES Edinburgh College is one of the largest year-round providers of English Language courses in Scotland. We have been running English programmes for EU and international (non-eu) students for over 40 years. College based ESOL courses are accredited by the British Council. I have been teaching English to high school students in Jiangsu Province, China for fifteen years. The Education Ministry arranged for our group of experienced teachers to attend the ICELT course at the Sighthill campus. The course is very useful as we have the opportunity to see classes and teaching styles here and how they differ from China. The social programme is also helpful and allows us to experience the country and culture. As English teachers it is so important to learn about the food, the music and the country, not just what happens in school. I am sure when I go home to China I will be able to apply everything new that I have learned in Edinburgh.
