Automation is not (yet) a standard Equipment Fleet Solution and Architecture Products Process Drivers Project Methodology and Governance
Return of investment.. a matter of time Hidden Cost shall be discovered Project Budget are different, sometimes a small investment returns the highest value Time plays an important role as technology is evolving extremely fast Requirements and Drivers can change during the project lifecycle Automation could cross multiple functions and increase the number of Training hours needed

Main Challenges Day by day business. Automation Process is often applied to working terminal Automation may require deployment of new IT architectures (i.e. Wi-Fi) Automation Firmware compliancy with terminal infrastructure (i.e. network) shall be verified Fleet of Equipment (TT, RTG, SC, QC, ) could be not homogenous and some could be de-scope from project TOS configuration can be affected by automation and new business process shall be designed and tested Project Governance shall be clearly identified as well as delivery interdependency Accurate CAD map for asset tracking

Consolidate Hardware installation TECPLATA hired Cargotec Argentina for the installation KALMAR created installation guides of every sensor installed RTLS and DGPS infrastructure installed Sensors and CrossCore were installed on RTGs, RS, EH & TT Kalmar consultant on-site assisting in the process Software installation Kalmar consultant made initial server installationo n-site, completed remotely First SW installation on CHEs was made by Kalmar consultant on-site, remaining CHEs have been made by TECPLATA resource Fine SW tuning on CHEs was made remotely by Kalmar Finland
Click Testing to edit Master title style Hardware Commissioning Hardware installation/configuration verified Integration of CHEs & MTS Tested all CHEs Result analysed and adjusted TECPLATA acceptance System Integration Integration SmartPort TOS N4 Kalmar consultant worked closely with Navis Soft Go Live, moving real containers in production enviroment Variation detected and repaired Integration final test
Go Live Kalmar provided on-site support for the Go- Live The complete solution was tested to ensure that the system operated properly and accurately Trained TECPLATA personnel and shadow assistance as the users begun to use the systems Split into one week of preparation and one week of production support. After the Go Live was completed, Kalmar support team started to assist the Terminal
Learned Lessons Automation is not a plug & play Same team of consultants during the project lifecycle is an advantage The integration between KALMAR- NAVIS was the key factor of the decision of TECPLATA. The solution has been customized to fulfill TECPLATA expectations Working with local partner (Cargotec-Argentina) for completion of installation on all CHE was beneficial for both side.
Lessons Learned Before installation of the solution, the operations team should be familiar with the use of EC and PrimeRoute The implementation team should be a mix of operations, IT and maintenance Project Manager: 70/80% of his time Being part of Ops staff and with an operation mindset was an advantage The PM should know and understand the process to be automated During the Project, the training of the operators consumed a considerable amount of hours
La Spezia Container Terminal, Italy 1.2 Million TEU Over 2000 m quay 11 Quay Gantry Cranes and 7 Mobile Cranes 12 RTG 8 RMG 27 Reach Stackers
Postion Detection System Automated since 90s Equipment Automation Business Logic RMG Transponder, sensors TOS RTG DGPS
Targets and Benefit Increase reliability of container locations no more lost containers! Speed up of rehandling operations under RMG/RTG with no manual input of container numbers and/or positions The effective return is coming from the TOS that shall apply the right and desired business logic. Expert decking manages automatic rehandling decking Selected job is automatically promoted on job list
Lessons Learned Keep it simple: requirements and technology This was mainly an operations and technical project Training: all drivers shall be trained and made aware of the new procedure Manual process shall always be possibile to override exeptions
