North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University Division of Information Technology (DoIT) VPN Client Installation & Configuration Guide for Macintosh Note: A VPN is a secure method for employees to access restricted University services while they are outside of the campus network. VPN connectivity doesn t work while employees are on the campus network. Install and configure the VPN client on the computer that you plan on using outside of the campus network. Instructions: Follow the steps in this guide to install and configure a VPN client on a Macintosh PC. If you need assistance, contact Aggie Tech Support by phone (336-334-7195) or e-mail (helpdesk@ncat.edu). You can learn more about VPN by reading the document "VPN Frequently Asked Questions". (Downloading the VPN client and the Employee.pcf file must occur while you are connected to the campus network.) 1. Download VPN client software for Macintosh (Note: You must be connected to the campus network to perform this step.) Login to your Personal Computer (PC) at the University. Map an available drive on your PC to the the "University Share Drive". (i) If you are using a Windows PC to map to the "University Share Drive", then map the available drive to the following path: \\Webdubois.employee.ncat.edu\UniversityShare If you are using a Macintosh PC to map to the "University Share Drive", then map the available drive to the following path: smb://webdubois.employee.ncat.edu/universityshare (ii) When you map the available drive on your PC to the "University Share Drive", you will be prompted for a username and password. Enter your Active Directory (AD) username and password which is usually the same as your NC A&T Email username and password. NOTE: NOTE: You must include "@ncat.edu" after the username. If you encounter a username or password error, you can obtain your Active Directory (AD) username and password by calling Aggie Tech Support (ATS) at 336-334-7195. (iii) After you finish mapping the available drive on your PC to the "University Share Drive", open the folder VPNClient. This folder has the VPN client software. Follow the steps listed below to download the VPN client software from the "University Share Drive" to a portable storage device like a thumb drive. (i) (ii) Connect a portable storage device (thumb drive, etc.) to your PC. On the portable storage device, create a new folder named vpnclient_software. Rev 2.9 7/20/12; 6/26/12; 2/21/12 Page 1 of 5

(iii) Copy the folder listed below from the folder VPNClient on the University Share to the folder vpnclient_software on the portable storage device. - vpn Client 4.9 for Mac OSX 10.x (iv) Also copy the following file from the folder VPNClient on the University Share to the folder vpnclient_software on the portable storage device. - Employee.pcf At this point, you have downloaded the VPN Client software for Macintosh to your portable storage device. Proceed with step 2. 2. Install and Configure VPN Client for Macintosh (Note: You must perform this step on the computer that you will use outside of the campus network.) (f) Login to the Remote PC. This PC can be a laptop for travel or a desktop for working from home. Copy the folder vpnclient_software on the portable storage device to your Remote PC. Change to the folder vpnclient_software. Change to the folder vpn Client 4.9 for Mac OSX 10.x. Double-click on the file vpnclient-darwin-4.9.01.0280-universal-k9.mdg. Proceed with installation of the VPN Client. At the end of the installation process, you will receive a message that the "Install Succeeded". (g) (h) After you have restarted your PC, start the VPN client. (i) Click on Finder. (ii) Click on Applications. (iv) Double-Click on VPNClient. After you start the VPN client, the following window will be displayed. Rev 2.9 7/20/12; 6/26/12; 2/21/12 Page 2 of 5

(i) Click the Import Icon near the top of the window. (j) A new window will appear and prompt you to select the connection entry to import. (i) Locate the file "Employee.pcf" which is located in the vpnclient_software folder that you copied to your Remote PC. (ii) Select the file "Employee.pcf file" by clicking on it. (iii) Click on Open. (iv) You will see a message that the file imported successfully. (k) Close the VPN client window by clicking on the "Red Button" in the upper left corner of the window. (l) At this point you have: (i) installed the VPN client, and (ii) configured the VPN client so that it will connect to the network at NC A&T SU. (m) Proceed with Step 3. 3. Create VPN connection on Macintosh On your remote PC, start the VPN client that you installed. (i) Click on Finder. (ii) Click on Applications. (iii) Double-Click on VPNClient. After you start the VPN Client, the following window will be displayed. (i) Note that the status of the VPN Client is displayed at the top of the window. The status is "Disconnected". (ii) Note that the VPN Connection Entries are displayed near the middle of the window. The only connection entry is "Employee". Rev 2.9 7/20/12; 6/26/12; 2/21/12 Page 3 of 5

Click on the connection entry named Employee. Click on the Connect Icon. Your will be prompted for your VPN username and password. Enter your Active Directory (AD) username and password which is usually the same as your NC A&T Email username and password. NOTE: Do NOT include "@ncat.edu" at the end of the username. NOTE: If you encounter a username or password error, you can obtain your Active Directory (AD) username and password by calling Aggie Tech Support (ATS) at 336-334-7195. If your VPN login is successful, you will see the following VPN Client Window. (i) Note that the status of the VPN Client is now "Connected". (ii) Note that there is a "gold lock" to the left of the Connection Entry "Employee". (f) (g) At this point, you have a secure VPN connection from your Remote PC to the campus network at NC A&T SU. The desktop on your computer will look the same. The only difference is that you can now access those applications at NC A&T SU which require you to be on the campus network. When you have finished accessing your applications at NC A&T SU, proceed with step 4. 4. Terminate VPN connection on Macintosh When you have finished accessing your applications at NC A&T SU, follow the steps listed below to terminate your VPN connection: On your remote PC, open the VPN Client Window. Then, click on the Disconnect Icon near the upper left corner of the window. If the disconnect is successful, your will see the following VPN Client Window: (i) Note that the status of the VPN Client is now "Disconnected". (ii) Note that the "gold lock" to the left of the Connection Entry "Employee" has disappeared. At this point, you no longer have a VPN connection from your Remote PC to the campus network at NC A&T SU. If you want to close the VPN Client Window, you can click on the "Red Button" in the top left corner of the VPN Client Window. Rev 2.9 7/20/12; 6/26/12; 2/21/12 Page 5 of 5
