Page 2 Course Description The course will employ a mixture of interactive lectures, case discussion, and cadaveric labs for MENA (Middle East / North Africa) delegates to achieve the following: To gain an understanding of the core principles underlying planning and undertaking complex primary and revision hip surgery. Understand the latest scientific data that supports different techniques in the field of THA Learn about the pros and cons of various surgical approaches and also appropriate surgical techniques during complex Primary & Revision procedures. Gain awareness of the additional associated considerations for revision hip surgery such as preoperative planning, patient selection and complication Management Chairman Dr. Philip J Roberts, FRCS (Tr & Ortho), MB BS, FRCS University Hospital of North Staffordshire Stoke-on-Trent, UK Philip Roberts is Clinical Lead for the Fractured Neck of Femur Specialist Unit at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, which currently manages over 600 patients annually. He completed his degree in Infection and Immunity in 1989 and qualified from St. Mary s Hospital, London, in 1992. He studied Orthopaedics at Oxford and gained a registrar position on the Stoke/Oswestry rotation, finishing with a fellowship in Cardiff. Philip was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the UHNS 2003. He was appointed NHS Institute Clinical Lead for service improvement for fractured neck of femur patients and Vice-lead for total knee and hip replacement patients in 2008-10. Mr Roberts work is focused on the hip. He has a passion about infection prevention and believes if managed aggressively this is the most important avoidable complication for surgical patients. He is a member of the UHNS Clinical Governance Committee, the British Medical Association and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
