2 ACSA and SCTS Education welcome you to the Introduction to Surgical Care Practitioner A Master class in conduit surgery in CABG. SCPs are often unable to attend the SCTS conference due to Consultant Surgeons and specialist registrar s educational commitments. The ACSA and SCTS education team plan to organise a yearly SCP educational meeting which will be focused upon the need of the SCP, being beneficial in providing continuous professional development. The course provides you with the opportunity to develop the clinical skills and competencies in an interactive friendly environment. The course offers an opportunity to practice techniques in the wet-labs and simulators. It offers an opportunity to network and build relationships with fellow colleagues around the country. We have a keen faculty of surgeons from all aspects of the specialty interested in education who are eager to share their knowledge with you. The Course directors have organised an exciting programme to address your needs in line with the normal practice to develop your current surgical skills and also improve your continuous professional development. ACSA and SCTS Education is delighted to offer this course in partnership with corporate sectors which in line with Ethicon, Maquet, Sorin, Terumo, Sonasite, Karl-Storz etc. This Master class will be repeated once in every year with rolling programme to provide easier access to all SCP s in the country. 3 Message from SCTS Secretary Surgical Care Practitioners are becoming more and more pivotal in delivering cardiac (and thoracic) surgical care. There are around 250 SCPs in the UK involved in cardiothoracic surgery - and as junior doctors are phased out of their service requirement this staff group of SCPs will increase in number and importance. As a group they are qualified nurse or ODP and are affiliated to SCTS and or ACSA if they choose to. They assist in theatres, see patients pre and post operatively and also help in outpatients. They are routinely harvest the saphenous vein for bypass surgery and occasionally the radial artery. They are also work as an assistant to surgeons in all cardiothoracic surgical procedures. This is challenging technical surgery which is vitally important for the success of the bypass procedure as well as making sure the wounds heal without complications. So, the educational developments of SCPs are important for the cardiothoracic society and also for their continuous professional development. Mr. Simon Kendall MS, FRCS.
