It is a great honor for me to invite you on behalf of the AO Alumni Association (AOAA) Hungarian Chapter to the AO Seminar on Geriatric Fractures This year the AO Seminar - sponsored by AO Education and Synthes Medical Hungary Kft. - will take place from nd November 2008, Siófok, Hungary. The effect of osteoporosis on quality of life and its expected impact on the health care system has become a primary topic of discussion around the world. The two contributing factors are increase in life expectancy due to the improvements in the treatment of chronic disease and the aging of the baby boom generation. This generation s increased life expectancy will create the largest demand for health services for elderly that has ever existed. The European population over the age of 65 is 17%, in the next ten years that number is expected to 20% and in 2050 could be over 30%. Osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures will become a public healthcare crisis as a larger percentage of population ages and lives longer. The course addresses the importance of managing the geriatric fracture patient. Elderly patients that suffer from an acute osteoporotic fracture and in addition from a number of severe co morbidities, represent a relevant number of our fracture cases. With this seminar we would like to demonstrate how the overall care of elderly fracture patient can be substantially improved. Improvement may be confirmed by reduction of length of stay, by degreasing readmission rates and increasing capabilities to reintegrate these patients following hospital demission. The purpose of this course is to update the already more experienced orthopedic-trauma and general surgeons with the presently burning issues in current elderly fracture management. Besides formal lectures that cover the most of the common fractures of spine, shoulder, elbow, distal radius, hip and knee, a large amount emphasis will be given to the crucial aspects of osteoporotic bone management, minimally invasive techniques, intraoperative tricks and hints as well as postoperative care. There will also be opportunities for informal discussions and case presentations, which should encourage the most valuable exchange of experiences involving both experienced international (Austrian, Czech, German, Israeli) and local (Hungarian) faculties together with participants.
