Sessions and Speakers New Supervisory Committee Member Training/Current Member Refresher The supervisory committee serves a critical function in credit unions. To be an effective volunteer leader, you need the skills and knowledge to understand and addresses key risk areas of a credit union and provide effective audit results. Whether you re new to the role or a veteran, this nuts & bolts session will help you better understand your duties as a supervisory committee member, as well as your role with members, directors, staff, auditors, and regulatory agencies. Everyday Ethics - Common Grey Areas; Black and White Actions Conflict of interest or just an oversight? An arm s length transaction or too much involvement? Overseeing ethics and potential conflicts at your credit union is an important duty for supervisory committees. Whether it s personal advantage, preferential treatment, undue influence, gifts, or indirect financial advantage -- the supervisory committee is charged with reviewing and ensuring that benefits to the credit union s officials and professionals do not exceed benefits to the credit union or its members. And, when ethical questions arise, supervisory committees must be ready and able to stand up for the ownership rights and financial stakes of each member. In this session, supervisory committee members will learn how to review, question, and enforce that the best interests of all members govern decisions and actions at all levels. The Supervisory Committee Member s Guide to Conflict On the Committee and with Your Board Participating as a member of a supervisory committee is a very important role in financial services. It offers an intimate experience for participating in the oversight and compliance of a credit union. Your fellow supervisory committee members bring a wide range of experiences and perspectives. Wherever individuals with strong convictions work together there will be differences; how we engage and manage those differences determines whether such conflict will get in the way of collective wisdom, or, enable it to emerge. And, sometimes, it limits our ability to oversee the credit union and maintain appropriate access and communication with the Board of Directors. Conflict can be constructive. Managed well it promotes change and adaptation, awareness of self and others. It can even strengthen relationships and heighten morale. Managed poorly however, conflict can also be destructive, hurting individuals and damaging relationships and credit unions. In this session, learn the most practical applications to the most frequent types of conflict in credit unions around the nation. The lessons you learn from others may be exactly what your supervisory committee needs to manage any level of conflict. Conference Details Jeff Rendel Jeff Rendel, Certified Speaking Professional, knows the financial services marketplace. With experience as a federal banking regulator, financial services executive, and Congressional lobbyist; he understands the balancing act of safety, soundness, sales, and strategy. As President of Rising Above Enterprises, Jeff works with financial services providers that want elite results in leadership, sales, and strategy. Each year, he addresses and facilitates for nearly 100 financial institutions and their business partners.

As a federal banking regulator with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Jeff examined a wide array of the nation s banks and partnered with all levels of executive management. As a financial services executive, he oversaw the strategic operations of a leading California community bank, directing corporate initiatives and helping guide the bank to record growth, market share, and financial results. As a chief lobbyist to Congress, he represented financial institutions on the West Coast, serving as a first and main resource to Members of Congress as they sought to understand implications of legislation upon financial services. A highly sought after and accomplished speaker; he is a professional member of the National Speakers Association (NSA) and has earned the NSA s Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation. Fewer than five percent of the world s speakers hold this achievement. Outside of the office and off the platform, Jeff is an avid reader and is learning the particulars of being an ice hockey referee. His much better half, Jayne, adds indispensable balance to his life. Together, they enjoy succulent gardening and their respective alumni loyalties to their college teams. It s a divided home from time to time. Little Miss Molly s arrival in 2005 made his life whole. When he s not on a stage or on an airplane, Jeff is on a sheet of ice, proving no match for Molly, as she figuratively and literally skates circles around him. Electronic Payment Trends and Risks An evolving landscape and technology on how the consumer performs electronic transactions today creates an understanding to manage the risk. Traditional payment channels have included online and mobile banking, however, mobile payments is garnering more attention. Find out the trends and risk exposures facing these payment channels. Understand where the transaction trends are moving, who some of the vendors are, and how cross channel fraud monitoring is becoming one of today s must have to manage overall transaction risk. This session will focus on transaction risk vulnerabilities and what controls and practices your credit union can consider to help reduce risk. Ken Otsuka Ken Otsuka is a Senior Consultant Risk Management in the Credit Union Protection Risk Management Department for CUNA Mutual Group. In this role, Ken assists credit unions in identifying areas of risk in their operations, and recommends appropriate loss controls to reduce loss exposure. A graduate of Northern Illinois University, Ken earned a Bachelor s Degree in accounting. He received a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation in 1982.

Data Breaches Drive Information Security and Compliance into the C-suite Associations and analysts across regulated industries are urging leaders to prepare for more stringent oversight and governance of their information security program and initiatives by Congress and the NCUA. With so many credit unions outsourcing IT operations, it is important for leadership to remember that they are still responsible for the security of their credit union and its members. TraceSecurity Cybersecurity Expert Wes Withrow will discuss this increased scrutiny and elaborate on how credit unions can prepare to prove they have strategic plans in place that ensure information security and compliance is part of their everyday business and that their leadership understands how emerging cyber-attacks could affect their business. Wes Withrow Wes Withrow is a Cybersecurity Subject Matter Expert. For more than 15 years, Wes has worked in IT and information security. He began his career as a systems engineer at Under Armour, the global leader in performance apparel. Wes then joined the nation s largest university affiliated research center, The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, which for over 70 years has provided our nation with critical contributions in the area of national security and space. At the Applied Physics Lab, Wes served in roles that included enterprise IT operations management, systems engineering, and information security, working closely with multiple branches of the Department of Defense. Wes leveraged the diversity of his expertise to become the CIO at a business and technology consulting group responsible for providing managed IT services to industries that include legal, finance, oil and gas, healthcare, and education. Wes obtained a Master of Science in Information Systems from The Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Davis and Elkins College. He holds 13 industry certifications, which include the CISSP, CompTIA Security+, CompTIA Network+, Six Sigma, and HIPAA from both The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the U.S Department of the Navy, and has firsthand experience responding to state-sponsored cyber attacks. BSA /OFAC Compliance Update Despite the passage of time, regulatory attention to BSA/OFAC has not decreased and annual training is still required. During this session, you ll get the training, updates and information you need to help your credit union meet regulator expections.
