autumn 2015 toamnă 2015 CONFERENCE The professional association of opera houses and festivals in Europe Asociația profesională a instituțiilor de operă și a festivalurilor de profil din Europa Professional Development 18-21 November 2015 Bucharest National Opera education

2 CONFERENCES toamnă 2015 Parable of the Talents Recently returned from our intensive Opera Management Course in Peralada, I am more than ever aware of the qualities required to become an effective cultural manager. Skills in specific areas, yes, but also a holistic overview. A balance of energy and patience. The ability to work within and, where necessary, take the lead in a team. Mastery of detail, and unswerving dedication to achieving a goal. During the same week in August, Bucharest National Opera held its International Singing Competition, Le Grand Prix de l Opéra. The jury chose ten talented artists aged between 23 and 29 as finalists and prize-winners, originating from Georgia, Korea/Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia/England and Turkey. These laureates have been invited to perform again at a gala concert which will conclude our conference in Bucharest on 21 November. Earlier, in May of this year at our Madrid conference, we presented the winners of the most recent European Opera-directing Prize, and later that month I was in Moscow on the jury of Helikon Opera s NANO competition for young directors. Just before our Bucharest conference, Independent Opera will stage Max Hoehn s prize-winning production of Šimon Voseček s Biedermann and the Arsonists at Sadler s Wells in London. The questions of how to discover, encourage and nurture emerging artists, creative teams and cultural managers are a central preoccupation of opera companies today. As we learn from the Parable of the Talents in St Matthew s Gospel (chapter 25), a man going on a journey entrusts his servants with his property, to each according to his ability, challenging them to profit from it. For, to everyone who has more will be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This autumn s conference will focus on methods of achieving professional development across a wide spectrum. It involves General and Artistic Directors, Education and Human Resources managers and Executive Assistants. It also embraces the development of our new Opera Platform and the opportunities for change presented by rehousing opera. We promise you a stimulating few days in Romania s capital city. Nicholas Payne 2015 Opera Management Course in Peralada Douglas Montoya Mejia

autumn 2016 CONFERENCES 3 Programme The programme for the Bucharest conference follows a journey over its three and a half days. It begins with an overview of Romania s place in European opera today. Thursday focuses on the task of cultural managers and how they may become inspirational and effective leaders. Auditions that evening set the scene for Friday s exploration of artistic development, not only the training of singers but also how they may become more versatile and complete artists. Friday evening s staging of Oedipe by George Enescu will have been heralded by Thursday evening s party at the splendid Cantacuzino Palace which houses the Enescu Museum. Saturday looks at how to discover and encourage directors of opera, while also bringing together interactive and specialist debates covering key topics including the integration of education within an opera company s remit. It concludes with a gala concert showcasing the impressive international prize-winners from this year s Bucharest Singing Competition.
