ELECRAMA: the global gateway to the indian power story The World s largest power transmission and distribution confluence ELECRAMA-2012 was the 10th edition of ELECRAMA events that marked its tryst with history, yet again surpassing its earlier editions in terms of complete value generation to every stakeholder and partner who have been a part of this movement of epic proportions. As a business event, ELECRAMA-2012, once again pushed the envelope by delivering superior trade and business opportunities, especially, through the stellar concept of a Reverse Buyer-Seller Meet (RBSM) which put the different worlds in interface with each other for business. INAUGURATION ELECRAMA-2012 got to an electrifying start with the inaugural speech of the Union Minister of Power Mr. Sushilkumar Shinde, who lauded the efforts of Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers Association (IEEMA). Appreciating ELECRAMA s scope in the T&D sector, Mr Shinde said The government is delighted to see exports of high-end T&D equipment form Indian shores, while just a few years ago, we used to import T&D equipment. ELECRAMA-2012 was graced by the global leaders from the industry like. IEEMA CEO SUMMIT IEEMA CEO summit was organized in partnership with UTV Bloomberg, a leading business broadcaster. The Global Leaders of the power transmission and distribution business converged at the IEEMA CEO Summit on the sidelines of ELECRAMA-2012. The cream of the Indian electrical industry descended to hear the global industry leaders in discussion about India s role in the global power ecosystems and the tasks needed to shape the contours of future power networks. Moderated by Celebrity Bloomberg host Mini Menon, the eminent panel consisted of Elecrama-2012 brand ambassadors and power industry heavyweights which included Mr. Gilles Schnepp, Chairman & CEO, Legrand SA, Mr. Jean Pascal Tricoire, President & Chief Executive Officer, Schneider Electric and Mr. Gregoire Poux- Guillaume, President of Alstom Grid and Mr. Shomit Dasgupta, Advisor, Planning Commission; who were engaged in a thoughtprovoking discussion in the IEEMA CEO summit. GRIDWEEK ASIA 2012 A co-located event ELECRAMA hosted the maiden Gridweek Asia, an extension of the annual Gridweek conference held in Washington D.C, USA. The event was jointly organized by IEEMA and Clasma Events. At the inaugural session Mr Sam Pitroda, Advisor to the Prime Minister, Government of India and Chairman, Indian Smart Grid Task Force, said that the government is planning to set up Smart Meter Task Force. The premier event had the players in the smart grids space form US, Europe and other parts of the world in full attendance along with key stakeholders from the Indian power transmission sector. The galaxy of speakers delivered a ringside view of development, technology and opportunities in the smart gird field. CIGRE TUTORIALS A concurrent event at the venue The CIGRE Tutorials held at ELECRAMA-2012 saw eminent international experts of CIGRE from France, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Brazil, South Africa and USA. The key topics of tutorials were Insulated Cables, Sub Stations, Overhead Lines, Power System Protection & Automation. CIGRE provides an international forum to engineers working in various fields, with the objective to develop technical knowledge and exchange of information. Addressing a large audience of engineers from utilities and industry, Mr R N Nayak, CMD, PGCIL observed that with renewable energy playing a crucial role in future, smart grid is the way to go. UTILITY DAY Utility Day is one of the most important events at ELECRAMA considering that the common man is directly linked to Discoms. This is the forum where public and private utilities exchange best practices, knowledge and accomplishments. Mr. P Uma Shankar, Secretary, Ministry of Power, announced the government s slew of initiatives including 100% metering and providing interest subsidized finance to Discoms through National Electricity Fund (NEF). INDUSTRY DAY Industry Day at ELECRAMA-2012 was flagged off by Mr S Sundareshan, Secretary, Department of Heavy Industry, Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises. COMMERCE DAY Commerce Day was organized with the objective of highlighting the strengths and capabilities of the Indian electrical equipment manufacturing industry. Mr. Sanjeev Sardana, Mentor for International Business Division of IEEMA, said, to increase the share of exports, specific action need to be taken. Domestic manufacturers of electrical equipment need to focus more on Going Global as the latent demand for electricity is present, in virtually every developing country around the world. The Government of India has set a target of doubling exports, to reach USD 450 billion by 2014. IEEMA is targeting a 5% share of global trade in the next ten years. Mr. Sanjeev Sardana also highlighted the rebalancing of the global economic order and markets in Asia, Africa and LatAm emerging as high potential markets INNOVATION DAY Innovation Day was organized by IEEMA during ELECRAMA-2012 to encourage the scientific and academic community to come forward with solutions that could be game changers in the electrical sector. Mr Suresh Prabhu, former Union Minister of Power, in his impassioned keynote address said IEEMA should identify issues that need to be addressed and throw them up to the students of engineering and technology, and then let them come up with innovative solutions. Dr. R. Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India said that there is enormous amount of knowledge in India in power sector and ELECRAMA is instrumental in spreading this knowledge. He also handed over the prizes to the student teams and their guides who won the prizes at Engineer infinite 2012- the All India Engineering Talent Contest conducted by IEEMA.
CHANGEXCHANGE The RBSM (Reverse-Buyer Seller Meet) at ELECRAMA-2012 had an unprecedented and overwhelming response from both foreign buyers and Indian manufacturers of electrical equipment. The estimated business generated, on a conservative basis, was over Rs. 200 crore and another Rs. 500 crore worth of business is in the pipeline The event had over 2,000 scheduled meetings, arranged between foreign buyers and Indian sellers. 276 buyers from 31 countries from Africa, ASEAN, CIS and Latin America attended this mega RBSM, spread over five days, held in conjunction with ELECRAMA-2012, with the support of the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry. More than 683 Indian sellers represented the India supply side at ChangeXchange event including major Indian companies manufacturing electrical equipments. ENGINEER INFINITE The Engineer Infinite 2012 Student Project Competition activities began with the announcement in July 2011 and culminated in a grand exhibition of the project prototypes made by the students. The projects were on varied subjects and some had ingredients of futuristic and path breaking potential among them. 43 projects were selected for display at ELECRAMA-2012 from 799 valid entries received from 20 States of India. At final competition, a panel of judges interviewed the teams in depth to identified prize winning projects. The awards were given away by Mr. Suresh Prabhu, former Union Minister of Power and Dr. R Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor to Government of India.
