Introduction This document contains the release notes for Ascent Capture Internet Server (ACI Server) 3.1. Version 3.1 is a maintenance release for ACI Server 3.0. These notes contain: Instructions for upgrading from a previous release of ACI Server Important notes about installing ACI Server Miscellaneous issues Please read through all sections before you install ACI Server. Windows NT Service Pack Requirements Service Pack 4 or higher is required for installing the ACI Server software on your IIS Web server and for remote stations running under Windows NT. Note that this is different from the information listed in the Getting Started with Ascent Capture Internet Server guide. The guide incorrectly lists the requirement as Service Pack 3 or higher. Note Microsoft recommends that Service Pack 3 be used for installing IIS on Windows NT Server. However, you must install Service Pack 4 before you install the ACI Server software. Additional Documentation These release notes are a supplement to the following: Getting Started with Ascent Capture Internet Server (PN 10300209-000, revision A) For more information about Ascent Capture, refer to the following: Getting Started with Ascent Capture 3 (PN 10300202-000, revision B) Online help provided from any of the Ascent Capture modules Release notes provided in your Ascent Capture package To install ACI Server, you should have a working knowledge of the Internet and Web servers, Microsoft Internet Information Server and its components, your network configuration, and Ascent Capture. For more information about Microsoft products, refer to your Microsoft documentation. There are many books on the market today that provide good background and reference information about Microsoft Internet Information Server, including: Title: Running Microsoft Internet Information Server Publisher: Microsoft Press Authors: Leonid Braginski and Matthew Powell ISBN: 1-57231-585-7 Title: Administering IIS 4 Publisher: McGraw-Hill Author: Mitch Tulloch ISBN: 0-07-065536-7 Kofax Image Products 1

Upgrading from a Previous Release Read the following sections to upgrade from ACI Server 3.0. Note You must upgrade the ACI Server software at your central site before you upgrade your remote stations. At your central site 1 Stop the IIS Admin Service on your IIS Web server station. To do so, run Control Panel Services, select IIS Admin Service, and click Stop. 2 Uninstall the ACI Server software from your IIS Web server. To do so, run Control Panel Add/Remove Programs and remove Ascent Capture Internet Server. Note The Add/Remove Programs utility will remove your ACI Server files from your software installation folder, although you may be prompted to manually delete leftover items when the utility completes. If desired, you can manually delete leftover files in the installation folder. However, Add/Remove Programs will not remove or change your IIS Web site settings previously configured for ACI Server. For example, it will not remove your ACIS virtual directory or change its properties. To retain your IIS settings configured for ACI Server, do not delete your ACIS virtual directory. 3 Insert the ACI Server CD into the CD-ROM drive on your IIS Web server station. The CD supports AutoPlay, so the installation will automatically begin. (If it doesn t, run Setup.exe from the CD.) 4 Follow the instructions on your screen to install the software. Note You must install to the same folder from which you removed the previous version. 5 When prompted to do so, reboot your IIS Web server station. 6 Run Control Panel Services to verify that your IIS Admin Service is started. If necessary, select IIS Admin Service and click Start. At each remote station 1 Finish processing all batches on the remote station and upload them to your central site. 2 Shut down all Ascent Capture modules. 3 Uninstall the Remote Synchronization Agent. To do so, run Control Panel Add/Remove Programs and remove ACIS Remote Synchronization Agent. 4 Run Internet Explorer. In the address box, enter the address of your IIS Web server. 5 Click InstallFromTheWeb. 6 Follow the instructions on your screen to install the software. 7 Configure the desired polling times and download batch classes from your central site. Refer to Chapters 3 and 4 in the Getting Started with Ascent Capture Internet Server guide for instructions. 2 Kofax Image Products

Installation Notes Retaining IIS Settings After Uninstalling ACI Server To remove your ACI Server software from your IIS Web server station, you should use the Add/Remove programs utility available from the Windows Control panel as described in the Getting Started with Ascent Capture Internet Server guide. The utility will remove your ACI Server files from your software installation folder, although you may be prompted to manually delete leftover items when the utility completes. Installing to a Folder Other Than the Default By default, the ACI Server software is installed on your IIS Web Server to the C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\ACIS folder. It is recommended that you install to that folder. If you choose to install to a different folder, you will need to create a virtual directory that points to your installation folder. To install ACI Server to a folder other than the default: 1 Start the procedure documented in the section Installing ACI Server in the Getting Started with Ascent Capture Internet Server guide. Perform the following steps: Step 1 - Install Windows NT Server Step 2 - Install Ascent Capture Step 3 - Install the ACI Server Software on the IIS Web Server. When you are prompted for an installation destination, choose the desired folder. 2 After you perform Step 3 - Install the ACI Server Software on the IIS Web Server, do the following. a Start the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). To start MMC, select Start Windows NT Option Pack Microsoft Internet Information Server Internet Service Manager. b Expand the Internet Information Server tree until Default Web Site is displayed. c Right click Default Web Site and select New Virtual Directory. The New Virtual Directory wizard will be started. d Create an ACIS virtual directory. (You must use ACIS as the alias of the virtual directory.) When you are prompted to enter the physical path of the directory containing the content you want to publish, enter the path to the folder where you installed the ACI Server software. When you are prompted for access permissions for the virtual directory, select Allow Read Access and Allow Directory Browsing. Then, click Finish to complete and close the New Virtual Directory wizard. 3 Continue the installation with Step 4 - Configure Default Web Site Properties. (You will have already selected properties for the ACIS virtual directory. Follow the steps in Step 4 to ensure the properties are set correctly.) Kofax Image Products 3

Installing the Remote Synchronization Agent from the CD-ROM After you install the ACI Server software on your IIS Web server station at your central site, you can install the Remote Synchronization Agent on your remote stations. The Remote Synchronization Agent was intended to be installed via the ACI Server Installation page displayed in a browser. However, it is possible to install the Remote Synchronization Agent on a remote station from the ACI Server CD. To install the Remote Synchronization Agent from the ACI Server CD: 1 Follow the instructions for Setting Up a Remote Station in Chapter 2 of the Getting Started with Ascent Capture Internet Server guide. Perform the following steps: Step 1 - Install Ascent Capture Step 2 - Configure the Appropriate Internet Explorer Security Settings 2 Read through Step 3 - Install the ACI Server Remote Synchronization Agent. Then, rather than installing from your browser, insert your ACI Server CD into your CD-ROM drive and run E:\Download\Setup.exe (where E: is your CD-ROM drive). Note The CD supports AutoPlay, which you will need to bypass. To bypass AutoPlay, press Shift as you insert the CD into your drive. If you do not bypass AutoPlay, cancel out of the installation that will automatically begin. If errors are displayed, click OK to dismiss the errors. 3 Make certain the installation banner is Remote Synchronization Agent. If it isn t, cancel out of the installation and try again. Make sure you run the Setup program from the Download folder on the CD. 4 Follow the instructions on your screen to install the software. 5 Continue the installation with Step 4 - Download Batch Classes and Configure Polling Times from the Getting Started with Ascent Capture Internet Server guide. Installing the Remote Synchronization Agent Over a Secure Connection When installing the Remote Synchronization Agent via the ACI Server Web page, problems may occur if you use a secure connection to your central site. (For example, you use HTTPS in your address line) This is a known problem with InstallFromTheWeb. Workaround: Install the Remote Synchronization Agent from the ACI Server CD. Refer to the previous section for instructions. Alternatively, do not use a secure connection to perform the installation from the ACI Server Installation page. Proxy Server Support ACI Server supports proxy servers. To use a proxy server, you must enable and configure the proxy server address and port number in Microsoft Internet Explorer for every PC that uses a proxy server. To configure your proxy server settings, select the following: For Internet Explorer 4.x, select View Internet Options Connections For Internet Explorer 5.x, select Tools Internet Options Connections LAN Settings 4 Kofax Image Products

Miscellaneous Issues Remote Synchronization Agent Event Log Remote Synchronization Agent event information is now recorded in the Windows NT application event log. Publishing Batch Classes after a Download In some cases, batch classes cannot be published immediately after batch classes are downloaded to a remote station. If the central site s administrator attempts to publish batch classes within a few seconds after batch classes are downloaded to a remote station, the following error may occur: Fatal data base error - The Microsoft Jet engine cannot open the file filename. It is opened exclusively by another user or you need permission to view the data. Workarounds: Wait a few seconds and try to publish again. Do not try to republish immediately after a download. Stop the ACIS Web site while publishing, and start it again when publishing is complete. Central Control of Polling Times When polling times are set from the Central Administration page, they affect all remote stations. However, the settings won t become effective at a remote station until the remote station synchronizes with the central site. Workaround: If you want to centrally set polling times for all your remote stations and control when the new settings are sent to the remote stations, do the following: 1 Open the Central Administration page and set the desired polling times. Click Submit to save the settings. This will store the settings in a file on your IIS Web server. 2 To update a remote station, double click the system tray icon ( ) at the remote station. The Remote Synchronization Agent Status log will be displayed. Click Synchronize Now to update the remote station with the new polling times. All new polling times and batch classes will be downloaded to the remote station, and all completed batches will be uploaded to the central site. (If the system tray icon is not visible, reboot your remote station.) 3 Repeat step 2 at each remote station. Using the Remote Synchronization Agent Status log from the system tray icon (as described in step 2) is not the only way to synchronize a remote station with your central site. For example, you can also synchronize your stations from the Manual Synchronization page. Just open the Manual Synchronization page from a remote station and click Download Classes. Refer to the Getting Started with Ascent Capture Internet Server for more information. Kofax Image Products 5

Running Certificate Server 1.0 on Windows NT 4.0 There is a known problem running Certificate Server 1.0 on NT 4.0. Please see the MSDN Knowledge Base article titled Certificate Server Fails to Start with Event ID 7000 or 7009 at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q217/3/39.asp for instructions on updating your ODBC registry settings. The article includes a registry script that will update your registry so that Certificate Server will start. Appendix A - Resolved Issues The following table contains a list of Software Problem Reports (SPRs) that have been resolved since the ACI Server 3.0 release. Each item consists of a Kofax SPR number followed by a short description of the problem that was resolved. If you need further information about any item in the list, please note the SPR number prior to contacting Kofax Technical Support. SPR Number Description of Problem (These problems have been fixed) 17830 The English version of the Remote Synchronization Agent (RSA) did not work correctly on non-english versions of Windows. 18350 With the previous release, it was possible for a remote indexing station to assign document numbers already used by another station. This caused newer documents to overwrite the older documents during release, resulting in the permanent loss of the older documents. 18568 In some cases, problems occurred when the Remote Synchronization Agent (RSA) polled the central site. An overflow error would occur, causing the RSA to shut down. To continue, the remote station had to be restarted. 18888 In some cases on non-english versions of Windows NT, directory browsing for virtual Ascent directory caused problems. 18920 In some cases, closing the Remote Synchronization Agent did not remove the tray icon. 19672 The OCR full text path for image files was not used correctly at remote stations. 19818 OCR full text files temporarily saved at a remote station were not deleted when the batch was uploaded to central site. 6 Kofax Image Products
