FEES Check with the treasurer regarding any fees you might owe and get them paid as soon as possible Remember your senior fees ($25.), as well as cap and gown ($27.28), are due ASAP! ACT or SAT? Most Ohio and western Pennsylvania schools will take the ACT. Highly selective, East Coast or West Coast schools may prefer the SAT. Go online to the colleges' websites for information. Plan ahead. Registering online you have a better chance of getting Fitch as your test site. REMEMBER November 8 late registration for the December 14 ACT test. NOTE: If you haven't taken this yet and plan to go to college REGISTER SOON!!! Also, remember Fitch's school code is 365-695. Check with your college to see if you need the writing test. NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE NCAA Clearinghouse will only accept test scores sent directly from ACT and SAT. Make sure the code 9999 is on your registration materials. If you fail to do so you will need to submit a request (and fee) for an Additional Score Report. YSU Early Advisement and Registration Program gives you a jump start to your college planning. You must submit your Admissions Application and fee by February 15, 2014 to receive an invitation to participate. Universities such as Ohio State, Case Western Reserve, Cincinnati and NCAA want official test scores. This means the score must be sent directly to them from ACT or SAT. Go online to the websites to access additional score reports. As usual, a fee accompanies the transaction! We will continue to send copies of your test scores with your transcript to the schools when you make your request. Please give us a few days time to process although we usually can mail them by the next day's mail. COLLEGE APPLICATIONS It's time to make application to the college of your choice. REMEMBER all require an official transcript to be sent to their admissions office. The easiest way to do this is let us send everything at once when you send your application and the fee, so bring your completed application, check for the fee, and addressed, stamped envelope to Mrs. McGlynn or Mrs. Dockry and they will do the rest. If a letter of recommendation is needed, please allow at least a week for this to be done and see someone who knows you well and will give you a favorable recommendation. We have Student Brag Sheets for you to complete and give to the teacher who is writing the recommendation. College and scholarship applications should be typed. This always makes a better impression. If your college requires the Common Application you can access it at www.commonapp.org. COLLEGE PROGRAMS YSU has a Bachelor of Science in applied science in forensic science. Students will complete an internship at a forensic science laboratory. Designed to give students broad theoretical and practical background in scientific, legal, and investigative aspects of forensic science, graduates of the program would be prepared to continue their education in forensic science graduate programs or immediately begin careers in crime laboratories. YSU's Histotechnician Program is a 2-year Associate in Applied Science degree.
Working in laboratories you would prepare blood, tissues, and fluids from humans using a variety of precision instruments. The results of the tests detect and diagnose diseases. Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity are important. See YSU's catalog for details. Income range: $20,000 to $35,000. Deadline: December 31, 2013. The most popular areas at Baldwin Wallace are education, business and science. Various visitation days are available. BW has a new major sustainability. It examines human relationships to earth and looks at future needs that address social, environmental and economic well being. Also, BW is now test optional which means the ACT scores are not used as a factor for admissions. The student must still submit the scores after they have been admitted to determine Math and English placement. Profusion Therapy (operate heart-lung machines) pays $50,000-$60,000 for starting salaries with a 4-year bachelor's degree. Carlow College in Pittsburgh is one of the very few colleges in the country that offers this major. For more information, call 1-800-333- carlow. Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland) has outstanding Biology, Business, Engineering and Nursing Programs. Highly competitive criteria for admissions. Average ACT is 27-32. They only accept the Common Application. Early Action deadline is November 1, PPSP is December 1, Regular Decision is January 15. The University of Cincinnati is best known for Music (rated 2 nd behind Julliard) and Interior Design is rated #1 in the nation. Transportation and Industrial Design only accepts 60-80 students. Also, they have a strong co-op program, especially in Engineering. Their Engineering program is called ACCEND. If you are a high achiever, excel in math and science; take honors-level and AP courses this program is for you. Earn your bachelor's and master's degrees in just 5 years. DeVry University has locations in Cleveland and Columbus. It is a technical school that offers associate and bachelor degrees in business, engineering, computers, and telecommunications (without taking many general education requirements). If you prefer a hands on approach, check out DeVry. They also offer scholarships $2,000- $10,000, minimum GPA 2.7, top 5% of class. Did you know that St. Vincent College and Gannon University has an agreement with both Duquesne University and Lake Erie College of Medicine to admit some of their students to Duquesne's Pharmacy Program? Eastern Gateway College Affordable Tuition Earned credits will transfer to any state school. Gateway Grant is available to students with a 2.5 GPA that will cover full tuition. Great way to start college if you want to start in June 2014, use the Gateway Grant and your tuition is free. Transfer your credits to your university for Fall 2014. Eastern Kentucky has begun a new program, PGA Golf Management. Graduates will receive a Bachelors in Business Administration, major in Marketing with a concentration
in PGA Golf Management. Edinboro University offers all non-pa residents a lower tuition rate. Tuition for out-ofstate students is now $10,200.00 + room and board. Gannon University, located in northwest PA (about 2 hours away) is best known for its health sciences and engineering programs. They also have a 4 + 3 and a 3 + 3 Physical Therapy Program. Geneva College (Beaver Falls, PA 40 minutes away) has direct entry into their Engineering Program and 100% placement of graduates in the past 10 years. Goshen College NAIA, only 1,000 students, known mainly for medical areas, 100% placement of nurses. Hocking College's Music Program is designed to prepare students for careers in music production, performance and business management. In addition to an introduction to all aspects of music, students select one area of specialization. Each quarter, students will learn from visiting lectures, notable professionals in the music and entertainment industry. During the second year, students spend a quarter at Havering College in London, a school renowned for its pop music production and performance program. Hocking College is also well known for Wildlife Resource Management and National Resource Law Enforcement. Kent State University Most popular unique majors include Architecture, Interior Design, Fashion Design, Speech Pathology, and Aeronautics. They also offer a BS in Nursing with 96% passing rate. Scholarships are generous, entrance to main campus begins at 21 ACT, 2.5 GPA. Marietta College (2-2 ½ hours) is known for their Petroleum Engineering program. Also, one of the only Ohio schools with a cadaver lab. They also offer a 5-year Masters degree in Psychology. A new major is International Leadership with Pre-Law. Students will study abroad or in Washington D.C. during their 3 rd year. Mercy College Nursing school that is based in Toledo, but classes are taken at St. Elizabeth's and Kent State Trumbull. 3.0 GPA and 22 ACT is required. Small class size makes Mercy College very attractive. Visit the web @ www.mercycollege.edu. Mercyhurst College (Erie, PA) has a unique major called Intelligence Study. It is designed for those who want to fight terrorism in the U. S. Government. Mercyhurst also works directly with the FBI with 100% job placement. The Forensic Science program, another popular major, allows you to specialize in criminology, toxicology or wild life investigation. The Fashion Merchandising program allows you go to to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and return to Mercyhurst to complete your bachelor's degree. Mercyhurst also has a Dance major with emphasis on ballet. 85% of
students live on campus. Muskingum College Well known for their PLUS PROGRAM, offering academic support for students with learning disabilities and ADHD. For more information, call 740-826-8280. NEOMED Medicine and Pharmacy Applications should be submitted by December 15 for regular admissions. ACT scores must go directly to NEOMED. If interested, it is best to apply to all four (Akron, Kent, YSU and Cleveland State) for maximum consideration. New Castle School of Trades recently opened a new facility. Math is a necessity. One of the few schools preparing students for the Marcellus Shale Company. 1-800-837-8299. Oberlin College has an outstanding Conservatory of Music (nationally ranked). Many scholarships are available. The college takes great pride in the internship program and the new science center. Ohio Northern University has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. They have started a Forensic Biology major that is science based. Of course, direct entry to the pharmacy program is sought after by many prospective students. In the College of Business, finance is a new major. College of Pharmacy deadline is 12/1. OSU Honors & Scholars Program Deadline December 1, 2013. Scores range from a 27-30 with class rank of 10-20%. Complete online Honors Application by January 15, 2014. OSU All students should apply by February 1. FAFSA Deadline is Feb 15. Ohio University is best known for their journalism and education programs. They boast 85% placement into medical school. Apply before February 1. Average ACT is 21-26, GPA is 3.4. Journalism & Visual Communications deadline December 15, 2013. Honors College deadline is December 1, 2013. PTI (Pittsburgh Technical Institute) has a new program in School of Health Care Practical Nursing (12 month program). www.pti.edu. Slippery Rock - About 1 hour away in Western PA, is best known for their College of Education. Unique programs include Therapeutic Recreation Services (includes equestrian studies) and Safety and Environmental Management. They have a new recreation center, including a rock climbing wall and a new Science and Technology Building. $5000 grants are awarded to qualified Ohio residents. Minimum requirements: 2.75 GPA and 20 ACT. February 15 for most scholarships. Thiel College (45 minute drive, in PA) has small classes, co-ops, and internships, and a 98% placement into career positions within 6 months of graduation. Academic
requirements for acceptance are not as stringent as many other small liberal arts schools. Check it out! Universal Technical Institute is known for the NASCAR Institute. www.uti.edu. Ursuline College Located in Cleveland, is known for their nursing program (direct entry, 2.75 GPA, ACT 20) fashion, business and social work. Predominately a female school (1600 students), the minimum GPA is 2.5 and 17 ACT. U.S. Air Force ROTC is available at many Ohio colleges (BGSU, MIAMI, OSU, CIN). Once college is completed, you enter the Air Force as a military officer. For scholarships, students must have a 2.5 GPA, pass a physical, ACT of 24. Waynesburg University Located 1-1/2 hours from home, excels in nursing (100% passage on state boards), education (5 year degree with Masters) and criminal justice. They also offer a degree in marine biology, where the students spend 3 years at Waynesburg and 1 year at Florida Institute of Technology or UNC. Westminster College Many scholarships are available to Ohio and Mahoning County residents. If you are planning to attend Westminster, make application by December 15 for early action or after December 15 for rolling admissions. The College of Wooster ranks #2 (U.S. News & World Report) in Independent Study Program, #14 in PH.D.'s, 96% of the students received financial aid and is featured in Colleges that Change Lives.
