Public Services Designed specifically for managers working in the public sector, these innovative short courses can be taken individually or combined to form a recognised qualification such as a postgraduate certificate, diploma or even a full Master s degree. We can also deliver short courses to a cohort from your organisation. Whether you re working in local government, the NHS, education or the emergency services these courses will develop your knowledge and practical skills in order to make you a more effective leader. When and where will I study? Courses are usually taught over three days at weekends at our de Havilland Campus. They run throughout the year with start dates in September, January and April. The following modules are offered as independent short courses, or can be built up to form the compulsory elements of your Master s qualification. If you wish to pursue the Master s qualification, there is no set time period that you need to complete the courses in they are as flexible as you need. Leading and Managing Strategically Bringing a number of strands together, this course provides you with an overview of the development of leadership theory, before moving into contemporary themes and the concepts of systems thinking. Performance Measurement and Accountability You ll explore accountability issues, quality management, performance measurement and the allocation of control and resources in order to ensure the smooth running of projects. The Public Service Context Using the latest theory, this course focuses on developing your understanding of the interaction of your organisation and its environment, with particular emphasis on the impact of key macro-environmental drivers such as the government and technology, and socio-economic trends. Delivering Public Services This course gives you an in-depth understanding of the issues and complexities of delivering contemporary public services. It looks at the ethos and values of public service, organisational arrangements, operations, marketing, technology and much more. 9

Public Services (continued) Coaching and Mentoring Skills for Leadership During the course, emphasis is placed on how your skills can be used to coach and mentor your colleagues so that they reach their full potential. You ll be encouraged to integrate your learning with your own experiences. Contemporary Strategic Management Covering a wide range of perspectives, this course looks at topics such as defining strategic management, differing concepts of change, the interventions of management across a range of situations and much more. Strategic Partnerships This is an opportunity to develop practitioner research skills: methods of gathering evidence, analysing data, and carrying out empirical and qualitative research.
