MA Education (Leadership and management) Introduction The MA in Education (Leadership and Management) is designed primarily to support the continuing professional development of teachers and other graduates who are working as members of the Children s Workforce or are employed in early childhood settings. One key challenge for schools is to develop different levels of leadership that reflect the roles people adopt and responsibilities held. This qualification is designed for aspiring head teachers, deputies and other senior leaders to reflect on their role in the school and begin to consider and develop their own styles and philosophies of leadership. Page 1
University of Chester Induction Saturday 15th September 9.30am - 1pm at Riverside Campus The induction day is designed specifically for students who are new to the MA Education programmes at Chester. You will have opportunities to meet with key academic and support staff, check on your enrolment arrangements and attend briefings which are designed to provide you with the information you need to commence your studies with confidence. Whilst the agenda is quite full, you will have opportunities to chat informally with tutors and fellow students. We aim to make the day welcoming and relaxed but also productive and informative. The University online learning portal The University online learning portal is called Sharepoint. It has been specifically designed by the University and is tailored to meet our particular needs. It is essential that you enrol each year that you are on the course as this will keep your student access open and you will be able to fully utilize all of the resources on offer to you. On enrolment, you will be automatically assigned a log-in which will be your chester\ student number and a default password (usually your date of birth in reverse order eg 25 December 1980 = ). Once you have logged in you will be able to change your password to something more secure. Your university log-in also includes an account. Your address will be your student number@chester.ac.uk (eg @ chester.ac.uk). You can access your s from anywhere in the world by logging into Sharepoint. You can also have all your university s automatically forwarded to your personal address. Sharepoint includes all the usual online resources you would expect from a Virtual Learning Environment: information, documentation, discussion boards, module resources for your studies, immediate access to your assessment results, communication tools, assignment submission and feedback, etc. You will be shown how to use the online facility in the induction session. Fees The fees for are 425 per 20 credit module. Students usually complete three 20 credit modules per year. The full cost for the MA is 3825, the cost for a PG Diploma is 2550 and for a PG Certificate is Page 2
MA Education (Leadership and management) The academic credit structure All MA degrees are made up of 180 credit points known as CAT points (Credit Accumulation Transfer). You can move these between Universities. At the University of Chester these points are accumulated through 20 credit modules. Each module is designed to take one term to complete. This is a typical pattern for a full MA, although you can take up to six years to complete the full programme from the first time you register. Term 1 Term 2 Term 3 Year 1 Module 1-20 CATs CD7018 Critical Training for Leadership Module 2-20 CATs CD7020 Mentoring and Coaching Module 3-20 CATs CD7170 Leading Through Effective Teams Year 2 Module 4 (optional) - 20 CATs CD71431 Emotionally Intelligent Leadership Module 5-20 CATs CD2038 Change Management Module 6-20 CATs CD7032 Research Design Year 3 Dissertation - 60 CATs CD7034 A Postgraduate Certificate comprises 3 modules ( 60 CATs) and usually can be completed in 3 terms. A Postgraduate Diploma comprises 6 modules (120 CATs). You will need to accumulate 100 credit points before you embark on Research Design. Research Design must be taken before you embark on the Dissertation. The programme integrates professional practice, theories of leadership and school-based enquiry. You will have the opportunity to conduct action research in your own path settings to effect school improvement. It takes as its central premise, the understanding that managing people is perhaps the most important aspect of successful leadership. The dissertation is ordinarily worth 60 credits. It is an independent, original piece of research, and usually takes around a year to complete. Throughout your dissertation you will be provided with a supervisor from the University within the specialist area that you want to investigate who will support and guide your study. Although you are not required to attend any further teaching sessions during this period, other than meeting with your supervisor, we run dissertation research workshops on the two teaching Saturdays each term. There is no obligation to attend, but we hope that they will provide research students with a peer community, act as a forum to exchange research ideas and raise issues about the course, and offer you the chance of meeting another academic member of staff to help you with your study. Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) Applications for accreditation for prior learning can be made in relation to any of the non-core modules on the MA in Education (Leadership and Management) up to 90 credits. The pathway facilitates critical reflection on practice for those who already have successfully completed NPQH (National Professional Qualification for Headship) and who wish to complete a Masters qualification to strengthen their professional profile. The University awards 60 credits to NPQH, in line with the UCET national protocols. Page 3
University of Chester APCL To claim credit for prior accredited learning (credit you have already achieved from Chester or any other university)you will need to complete an Accreditation of Certificated Learning (APCL) form and bring a copy of your certificate to The MA in Education (Leadership and Management) Programme Leader, Jo Bacon, who will process your application for APCL. You can transfer 60 credits from a PGCE at Masters level and there is no charge for this. You must provide a copy of your certificate unless you did your PGCE with the University of Chester. 60 credits can be awarded for a PGCE which is at Masters level 60 credits can be awarded for National Professional Qualification for Headship Other National College programmes may also be awarded credit Leading from the Middle can be submitted with an additional critical reflection for which we provide tuition and guidance. This is equivalent to 40 credits but the normal module fee is charged at 440 (2 x 20 credits). You must provide a copy of your certificate and write a 2, 000 word critical reflection of the impact of your learning on the course. This reflection will be marked. APEL You may also submit a claim for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APEL). This may be for work you have accomplished in a professional capacity. This has to be submitted in the same way as an assignment and we provide tuition and guidance. There is a fee payable for each 20 credits that you bring in. Currently this Is charged at 210 per 20 credits. You can only import half of an award through the APL System, ie. 90 credits. However, if you have a post-graduate certificate or diploma from another university you can import the full credit from that award. Assessment Assessment is at the end of every module and is most commonly an essay, or a research report or a case study. The hand in dates are set at the start of each subsequent module i.e. three times a year. Module One 2 Feb 2013 Module Two 13 April 2013 Module Three 1st weekend of academic year Date TBC What if I need to extend the deadline for the submission of an assignment? You can have an extension to a module or defer from it. Extension If, for quite legitimate reasons, you are unable to submit your assignment by the deadline, you can apply for an extension. The form for this is available on Sharepoint in the MA online learning space. Your request must be sent to the Programme Leader (and copied to the module tutor) prior to the deadline, allowing sufficient time for them to respond. We encourage students to try their utmost to meet deadlines as we know from experience that this can lead to other problems with your studies. We keep a record of those applying for extensions and will contact anyone who seems to be continually struggling to meet deadlines. If you require an extension please contact Richard Betts at r.betts@chester.ac.uk Deferral Our Assessment Board is in January each year. Our reassessment Board in May. If you cannot submit your work in time for one of these boards you need to Defer your module using the form on the MA Programme space in Sharepoint. If you require an extension please contact Richard Betts at r.betts@chester.ac.uk What happens if I need to take time out? Typically it will take 3 years to complete an MA Education (Leadership and Management) programme following the delivery pattern highlighted on page 2. However you have up to six years to complete your MA from the start of registration and up to three years to complete a Postgraduate Certificate. If, for any reason you wish to suspend your studies you will need to complete the relevant proforma (again available through Sharepoint) and explain the circumstances. We ask you to indicate when you are likely to recommence your studies which is as much for your benefit as our information. Page 4
MA Education (Leadership and management) What happens if I fail something? Your tutor will contact you and discuss additional support with you. You can resubmit any failed work, once more, usually at the next submission date. We recommend a tutorial before any resubmitted work is assessed. Electronic submission All assignments are submitted electronically through an online submission portal attached to each module. The Icon is a pigeon. The process is similar to adding an attachment to an . The system automatically logs the date and time you submitted your assignment, sends you a receipt and also notifies the relevant tutor that your assignment is ready for marking. You will be shown exactly how to submit your assignments electronically as part of the induction session. Electronic submission eases the process for you in handing-in your work, as it can be done from anywhere in the world. It also safeguards you and us by providing clear evidence of your submission and providing us with safe storage for your assignment. It also means we can access your work from anywhere in the world, at any time, as can second markers and our external examiners. Tutors will usually return your annotated work and feedback electronically which means you should receive feedback promptly. We aim to return work within 4 weeks of submission. Weekend Dates The study dates for the academic year are: Induction Day Saturday 15th September 9:30am - 1pm Trimester 1, 2012 / Module 1 Friday 12th October and Saturday 13th October Friday 16th November and Saturday 17th November Trimester 2, 2013 / Module 1 Friday 1 st February and Saturday 2 nd February Friday 8 th March and Saturday 9 th March Trimester 3, 2013 / Module 2 Friday April 12 th and Saturday April 13 th Friday May 10 th and Saturday May 11 th Modules Masters of Arts (MA) in Education Programme Please ensure that you have enrolled for each module you that attend. If you are not sure at the beginning of the year it is better to wait and enrol module by module than have to change module. Disabilities and Specific Needs If you have any disability, Specific Needs or illness that would require assessment through different circumstances, please contact Jo Bacon, MA Education (Leadership and Management) Programme Leader. For more detailed information, please follow this link disability-support Calendar of events The MA Education is delivered part-time through two weekend schools per term. The dates for are shown below. Sessions run from 5.00pm -7:00pm on a Friday evening and 9.30am to 4.00pm on the Saturday. There is no other attendance, though you may want to attend individually negotiated tutorials, particularly when studying for your dissertation. It is expected that you attend all sessions. Sometimes you may experience unavoidable difficulties and you find you have to miss a session. We would expect you to contact the module tutor to discuss alternative arrangements. Page 5
University of Chester Autumn Term 2012 Module Code Module Title Module Description Tutor CD7018 Critical thinking for Leadership This module aims to provide an insight into how critical thinking can inform school leaders and help with decision-making. Participants will have the opportunity to revise or learn new skills that will help them read and write using their critical skills. They will be encouraged to question the documents they read and to present an argument for their own ideas and philosophy of education. David Cracknell CD7131 Emotionally Intelligent Leadership The module aims to develop a critical understanding of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and the way that it impacts on leadership and practice. It investigates research associated with EI and will enable participants to make informed judgements about the way that EI leaders work. Robert Haigh CD7032 Research Design Research Design is a module that helps you to prepare for your dissertation, and should be undertaken only prior to the dissertation. During this module you will be introduced to possible areas of study, gain knowledge about how to frame a research question, and be encouraged to acquire practical skills that will help you to gather and analyse any data that you need to complete your research. Theoretical, historical and philosophical projects are as equally welcome as studies that focus on empirical data. This is a particularly important module because it forms the basis of your dissertation. Paul Moran/ Jane McKay / Jo Bacon Page 6
MA Education (Leadership and management) Spring Term 2013 Module Code Module Title Module Description Tutor CD7038 Change Management A key function of leaders in educational settings to plan and implement In an increasingly change and cope with an increasingly dynamic environment. The importance of having a sound knowledge of the key issues around leadership and change management are essential for existing and emerging leaders. This module investigates the role of leadership and how it enables and underpins managing effective change. Johanna Bacon CD7020 Mentoring and coaching for leaders Mentoring and coaching have been recognised as effective strategies for enhancing the quality and performance of personnel within organisations. A considerable amount of energy (and money) has been invested in researching and developing practices in these fields - but there is also a fair degree of hype and hyperbole surrounding the claims of the benefits of such approaches. This module aims to provide you with a clear and realistic view of what constitutes effective approaches to mentoring and coaching in an educational context and provides you with an opportunity to conduct a small scale enquiry within your own organisation and evaluate the outcome. Paul Moran/ Jane McKay / Jo Bacon Summer Term 2013 Module Code Module Title Module Description Tutor CD7170 Leading through Effective Teams This module examines some of the main thinking behind the concept of effective teamwork using a wide range of relevant research and theoretical frameworks and perspectives. Students will consider the importance of goals, roles, processes and relationships as features of effective teamwork and identify how the factors that promote and inhibit effective teamwork can be managed. Leadership and Management Any three of these Modules needed CD7018 Critical Thinking for Leadership CD7038 Change Management CD7020 Mentoring and Coaching for Leaders CD7170 Leading Through Effective Teams CD7131 Emotionally Intelligent Leadership Post Graduate Diploma Students may exit with a PG diploma upon successful completion of all six modules. Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership and Management Masters in Education (Leadership and Management) Students may exit with a MA Education (Leadership and Management) upon successful completion of six modules including research methods and a dissertation. Research and dissertations The dissertation is preceded by a compulsory research methods module. This is designed to prepare you for your dissertation. We have found, from experience, that this module is extremely beneficial which is why it is now a compulsory precursor. A dissertation provides you with an opportunity to focus on an aspect of your work which has been selected by you. It enables you to become an expert in that field and, hopefully, contributing something original to the field of education. You will be supported through your studies by a dissertation supervisor who will monitor your progress and provide personalized support through tutorials face to face and online. Rules and regulations We appreciate that as you are trying to balance your studies with full time employment and your family commitments, sometimes things do not go according to plan. We are governed by rules and regulations which are designed to make sure the system runs smoothly but also to ensure there is parity of experience for all. All this information is in the Programme Handbook. We have tried to be generous with the deadlines for assignments, giving you plenty of time to prepare and submit your work. If things go wrong for you, please contact any of us via and we will do our best to find a mutually agreeable solution. Page 8
