1 MBA International Human Resource Management

2 MBA International Human Resource Management is aimed at professionals and graduates, who would like to develop their business and management skills to boost their current career, make a career change, start their own business or lead their existing business into its next growth phase. I decided to study at Coventry University London Campus because the course offered exactly what I was aiming to achieve; an MBA which also includes international case studies, which is increasingly important in today s global market. Also, the location is excellent, as the university is positioned in a modern building in the heart of London s business district. James Terzeon MBA International Human Resource Management Who is the programme aimed at? MBA International Human Resource Management is an exciting, vibrant and intensive programme. It questions conventional wisdom and introduces new perspectives, new patterns of thinking and new insights into business, management and human resources in an international context. The programme aims to provide students with the core knowledge and skills to operate successfully in a contemporary global business environment to make them highly attractive to employers internationally. Core modules can provide a solid grounding in the key business areas of strategy, marketing, finance and leadership, whilst the mandatory modules in human resources management (HRM) offer an opportunity to develop specialist knowledge in strategic human resource management, recruitment and selection, talent management, training and development and organisation development. The learning and assessment of the programme reflects an action-centred learning approach and is focused upon group work, business simulations and real-world activities, all of which are underpinned by analysis and synthesis. Teaching, learning and assessment has a clear focus on career-building, covering not only the necessary knowledge and understanding, but crucially also cognitive, practical and transferrable skills required in a competitive international labour market. Students will study contemporary HR issues relating to international leadership, managing diverse cultures, international organisational development, recruitment and selection within multinational and transnational companies, the use of technology in International HR and staff development in a global context. Benefits of this programme The programme aims to develop students as individuals who are well-equipped to meet the leadership challenges of the future. Upon successful completion of the MBA, students can emerge from the programme with excellent analysis skills, clear perspectives on strategy and strategic thinking, and highly effective communication and research skills, all of which are valued by employers in the private, public, and third sectors. The programme provides a framework within which students can develop an analytical understanding of international business in the context of a changing environment. It helps students foster a commitment to personal development, a reflective style of management and a responsibility for their own learning. Students will also be provided with opportunities to develop a range of additional skills to be able to apply a variety of international business tools and techniques in real-world scenarios. By choosing this course, students can benefit from: flexible start dates in September, January and April; a unique experience delivered by an institution with strong foundations in educating business leaders; work-related activities and lectures from high-profile business figures; help to progress their career through additional training in areas such as CV writing, presentation skills and interview technique; a programme that questions conventional wisdom and replaces that body of ideas with new and developing perspectives, new patterns of thinking and new insights; an action learning approach focused upon team work, business simulations and real-world projects, all of which are underpinned by analysis and synthesis; business start-up advice and support for students who wish to star their own business; an opportunity to obtain a dual qualification MBA International Human Resource Management plus CMI Certificate Level 7 Strategic Management and Leadership qualification* *Subject to registering as a CMI member; CMI membership fees apply.

3 A Real Business and Professional Experience Business leaders, employers and students tell us that work experience is highly important to them; we are therefore committed to providing students with practical experience opportunities during their studies, to enable them to apply what they have learnt. Work experience at Coventry University London Campus can be undertaken in a variety of ways; an internship, business simulation project, consulting project, entrepreneurship project and for some programmes, the opportunity to work or study abroad. As an alternative to completing an internship or consulting project, students can opt to complete a dissertation write-up. Industry partners We work with a range of small, medium and large employers to offer students work experience opportunities during their programme and to ensure that our programmes evolve in line with the latest development in the industry. Some of our key industry partners we work with include: Career prospects and work experience Graduates with an MBA International Human Resource Management from Coventry University London Campus have the opportunity to work in a number of varied and exciting careers. 4 Programme Structure Term 1 10 weeks Academic and Professional Skills Sustainable Strategy - from Planning to Implementation Marketing in a Global Age Term 2 10 weeks Employability and Consulting Skills Leading in a Changing World Finance, Funding and Legislative Frameworks For Success Global HRM Strategies Term 3 10 weeks Term 4 10 weeks Core Modules Business and Management Research Methods or Entrepreneurship Resourcing and Talent Management Developing People Internship, Consulting Project, Entrepreneurship Project, HRM Simulation Project or Dissertation International Organisational Development Business and Management Research Methods or Entrepreneurship Students as future managers and leaders will need to document their company, industry or consultancy research based on accepted procedures within the business and management academic community. This module introduces students to the major theoretical perspectives and research strategies and associated methodologies in business and management research. Finance, Funding and Legislative Frameworks for Success The aim of this module is to explore key accounting and finance practice and the associated decision making tools within organisations. It will cover the nature of accounting and finance tools within a variety of business environments and consider appropriate management techniques to help identify strategic options. Drawing on the disciplines of financial and management accounting, this module will enable students to gain an appreciation of the type of financial information that is routinely produced by organisations for internal and external use. The module will use a wide range of business scenarios and apply relevant accounting techniques to critically evaluate and interpret financial information. Sustainable Strategy - from Planning to Implementation The module challenges concepts of strategy, its scope, purpose and outcomes and provides a practical outline of a number of different approaches to strategic management. The module also highlights the international scope of strategic management, the globalisation of technologies and markets and looks at the role of strategic alliances and international collaborations in establishing and nurturing competence for the achievement of strategic advantage. Marketing in a Global Age This module studies marketing: the application of marketing techniques and concepts to a number of different environments. It analyses the nature of marketing, the core concepts, techniques and processes. Students will have the opportunity to learn the complexity of managing marketing and applying theory in practice, to assess the effectiveness of marketing, discuss some of the difficulties in implementing marketing as well as the general ethical issues that arise from its use. Students will also appreciate how different aspects of marketing relate to and interact with each other. Therefore, this module aims to facilitate students understanding of applied marketing. Whilst building on and utilising basic knowledge of marketing literature, it seeks more to develop student critical analysis and understanding of marketing in practice. It seeks less to impart theory or knowledge but more to provide an environment in which advanced masters students can exchange their ideas, experiences and thoughts in order to build up critical understanding and appreciation of the value and limits of marketing in practice. Leading in a Changing World In a volatile and unpredictable economy and even in good times, leaders must demonstrate extraordinary performance to their employees, customers, shareholders and other stakeholders. The ability to lead sustainable strategic change is a key characteristic of effective senior managers and executives. Globalisation has increased the complexity of the role of a leader, in particular in delivering the challenge to integrate different national and organisational cultures to deliver international business strategies. This module examines the knowledge, skills, behaviours and techniques of leadership and explores the role of leadership in relation to other business themes such as globalisation, strategy, innovation and organisational development. Leadership is one of the most pervasive social phenomena. As such it is also a controversial one. This module will provide students with an opportunity to consider and develop some key leadership skills to support them in building their international business careers. Students will be expected to prepare themselves to address contemporary leadership issues such as globalisation, virtual teams and corporate social responsibility. This will be achieved by the acquisition of a critical understanding of the impact of such issues in practice. Consequently, the module aims to provide students with an understanding of the major philosophical issues within business and management research and enable students to identify the nature and characteristics of qualitative and quantitative research. Students can also learn to identify which theoretical perspective is appropriate to research the dissertation problem under consideration and to develop the theoretical foundation appropriate for the research problem. Students will understand the differences between primary and secondary data collection and how to collect/collate data and analyse and interpret it depending on the nature and characteristics of the research. Students planning on starting their own enterprise or to continue in their own business after graduation can benefit from other forms of business research. These are addressed in the alternative module to Research Methods that leads to the entrepreneurship project in the final term. In this module, students will explore various entrepreneurship and start-up models and research as a platform for the market research of a potential business opportunity. Students will then create a feasibility study and learn how to find relevant current data with judgement and confidence towards justifying a perceived opportunity and its implementation.

5 Specialist Modules Resourcing & Talent Management A major and fundamental objective of the human resources (HR) function is the mobilisation of a workforce. Organisations can only function if they are able to assemble together teams of people with the necessary skills, attitudes and experience to meet their objectives. A further objective is then to retain effective performers for as long as possible. From time to time it is also necessary to dismiss people from organisations. This module focuses on these activities, focusing not just on the practical aspects of recruitment, selection, employee retention and dismissal, but also on the strategic aspects to equip learners with the knowledge and skills required for resourcing and talent management within a global context. Skills can be sourced by hiring employees, but also through other means such as the employment of agency workers, subcontractors and consultants, or through outsourcing arrangements. As the skills that employers seek become more specialised, employment markets have tightened, leading to increased sophistication in the area of resourcing and talent planning. This is reflected in the increased use of proactive diversity management, employer branding, work life balance initiatives and innovative approaches to job design, which are covered in this module. Organisational Development This module will critically evaluate a range of factors that shape and influence the performance of an organisation. The module will begin with an exploration of the role of organisational development in developing organisational structure, behaviour and culture before moving on to look at the different models of planned change. The study of managing change will require students to understand the drivers of change in international organisations. As future managers, students will also need to apply their knowledge of change to be able to successfully implement and review the impact of change in their organisation. This module will move on to look in more detail at some of the key challenges facing organisational and personal effectiveness, and the interventions that can be used to facilitate effective change. Developing People This module aims to provide a grounding in the strategic management and development of people in organisations. The module is based around the main elements of the training model including training needs analysis, training design, training transfer and evaluation. In order to fully understand the context of training and development in organisations, students will consider the topics through a range of lenses - individual, team and organisational - as well as gain an appreciation of the challenges that globalisation brings to the successful delivery of international employee development strategies. Students will also consider the impact of aspects such as organisational structures, new technologies and the changing nature of the workforce. Students will be given the opportunity to develop an understanding of business strategy in order to formulate appropriate employee development strategies. Throughout the module students will explore the gap between the theory and what actually goes on in practice. Why don t theories of learning make the transition from the textbook to actual practice in organisations? Are training departments in organisations really perceived and run as key strategic functions? What is the role of the line manager in developing their teams? Final term options: Internship/Consulting/ Entrepreneurship/Simulation/Dissertation We offer a range of options to students in their final term of the programme where they apply the core knowledge and skills gathered during the course of their programme, through research and simulation activities. These options include work place internship consulting activities with partner organisations, dissertation, or business practice simulation. Students embarking on any of these options are supervised and supported by staff of the MBA teaching team to ensure they get the best quality learning experience in the course of these activities. Global HRM Strategies This module considers the political, economic and social factors that impact on international human resource management and employee relations. Through the study of the module students will have the chance to learn how to identify the human resource challenges and opportunities that face multinational organisations, such as how national and regional differences impact on the employment relationship. Students will also have the opportunity to evaluate international HRM strategies and policies in a range of operational areas including the integration of markets such as China and India. We will look at the theory, the research evidence and real life case studies to illustrate and critically examine the challenges facing organisations in managing their current and future work force. The module will build on existing level of knowledge of HRM practices to address the strategic imperatives in international business. These will include the metrics of human capital, the use of compensation and talent management strategies to attract and retain employees. Students will also examine the business skills and abilities of leaders in human resource management to successfully deliver such strategies. Academic and Professional Skills This module helps students to develop the key research and study skills to successfully manage learning at postgraduate level. By exploring their chosen area of business, student will develop expertise in research and writing skills for business, presenting original industry relevant research, developing multicultural teams, and making successful decisions in complex and ambiguous situations. ASPIRE Programme As an integral part of all postgraduate programmes, ASPIRE continues our commitment to delivering the business skills that employers demand from graduates entering the workplace. Students will follow a series of bespoke non-credit bearing modules that support the development of professional and industry relevant skills that can be applied to their real business experience on campus, and practiced in the final term. The programme includes the latest in career coaching techniques to prepare students to present themselves successfully to potential employers. Employability and Consulting Skills This highly interactive module helps students understand the needs of employers in their chosen career and to present themselves with confidence and passion to potential employers. During the module, students will receive tailored feedback on their personal presence and impact in a business environment and how to develop their ability to secure employment. Activities include building effective working relationships at work, understanding the needs of employers and delivering compelling presentations. On successful completion of the ASPIRE programme, students will receive a Certificate of Participation to reflect their commitment to their own personal and professional development as a future leader a criteria for students looking to be recognised by leading professional bodies.
