2 Postgraduate Certificate in Executive and Business Coaching Selecting the right coach training programme for you We appreciate that selecting the right coach training programme is a difficult decision. There are many offerings in the market and, at present, no industry-wide validating body to set standards and guarantee consistency of product and quality. As founder members of the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC) we are committed to remedying this situation. There are three categories of coach training currently on the market: 1. Non-validated coach training courses 2. Courses validated by the coaching provider organisation 3. Courses designed and delivered by a specialist coaching consultancy and validated, typically at postgraduate level, by a partnering University and/or professional bodies such as the EMCC This programme falls into the third category, being both EMCC accredited and validated by two universities at postgraduate level. As such it has high credibility and provides an ethical framework for good practice including guidelines for supervision and standards for coach practitioners. This should give great peace of mind to both those looking to train as a coach and, once trained, to those who will hire them. This is an advanced coach training programme underpinned by principles of Gestalt psychology. Delegates are introduced to a wide range of models and techniques which are embedded through extensive practice, including the Use of Self as an instrument of change - "the highest order coaching skill" (Bluckert). Accreditations and validations European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC) - Senior Practitioner Level Postgraduate Certificate validated by Leeds Metropolitan University (60 CATS points) Module 1 (of 3) MA in Executive and Business Coaching Eligible for Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Level 7 Diploma in Leadership Coaching and Mentoring Upon completion of this programme delegates may apply to complete either Postgraduate Diploma (Coaching Psychology or Coaching Supervision) before progressing on to the one year MA course directly with LMU. Benefits and outcomes After completing the course you will have 90 hours of supervised coach practice already under your belt, and as such you will be ready to build a strong and sustainable coaching practice - independently or as a resource within your organisation. You will also have: A sound understanding of the theory and practice of coaching, in particular coaching people at senior levels in organisations. Highly developed self-awareness and awareness of your impact, enabling you to work with the psychological, relational and cultural aspects of coaching. 2

An integrative understanding of your own unique approach to coaching - putting your signature on your coaching practice. A close network of coaches who will have journeyed alongside you on the course - for support, co-consultancy and learning. Who is this course for? People join this programme from a variety of backgrounds. 4 Demonstration sessions from course tutors University awards at postgraduate level (LMU and UCD) Accredited by the European-wide coaching professional body, the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC) at Senior Practitioner Level Level 7 qualification in Leadership Coaching and Mentoring awarded by the Chartered Institute of Management (CMI). Course design reflects the three higher level competency categories of business and executive coaching: business-mindedness, coaching skill and psychological-mindedness. Course format The programme runs over a nine month period and comprises six workshops which provide the equivalent of 100 training hours. There are two 2-day workshops where the focus is skills practice and group supervision. There are four 3-day workshops which address the interweaving strands of theory, personal and professional development, and skills practice. They cover: The Fundamentals of Coaching: Topics at this workshop include the main themes and principles in coaching, the TGROW model, contracting and ethical behaviour. The Psychological Dimensions of Coaching: Amongst other things at this workshop we look in depth at Gestalt approaches to coaching (PB Coaching s central underpinning orientation), Emotional Intelligence and Gallwey s Inner Game. Coaching for Behavioural Change: The main themes at this workshop include the Prochaska Change Model and Kegan and Lahey s Immunity to Change process. Coaching in the Organisational Context: Applying coaching to organisations is a huge growth area. We explore the concept of "role" and the idea that role is what links the individual to the organisation. How do we relate to our role? What happens when the role is not clear to individual or organisation? We also explore the development of coaching cultures and one-toone coaching of executives and senior leaders. Course content 1. Coaching Theory and Principles: Relevant concepts and thinking from Coaching, Management / Leadership theory, Consulting Psychology, OD and Change Management, Sports Coaching/Psychology, Adult Learning Theory, Human Growth and Potential Movement, Counselling/Psychotherapy, and Success literature. 2. The Coaching Relationship: How to create a safe, supportive yet challenging environment that produces trust, respect and the conditions for learning. 3. Key Coaching Skills: The full spectrum of coaching skills both basic and advanced including: listening, questioning, feedback, challenging, goal setting, the centrality of awareness etc. 4. The Four Aspects to a Coaching Session: How to work with the client's story, their thought processes, their emotions and the coach's use of self. 5. The Six Key Factors in Successful Coaching: Good coaching process, good coaching method, the skills, experience and commitment of the coach, the coaching relationship, the coachability of the client and professional boundary management. 6. The Psychology of Coaching: The psychological and emotional dimensions to performance issues. The personal development of the coachee and the coach. Psychological skills and 4
5 concepts relevant to coaching drawing on thinking from cognitive/behavioural psychology, psychodynamic theory, constructive developmental psychology, gestalt and emotional intelligence. 7. The Use of Self: Using one's own internal processes as a source of information and a guide to intervention referred to as the highest order coaching skill (Bluckert) 8. Corporate Applications of Coaching: The key applications of coaching in the organisational context including coaching for leadership development, coaching for behavioural change, coaching for emotional intelligence, coaching for culture change. The differences between coaching, mentoring, counselling and consulting. 9. Line Manager and Internal HR Coaching: The key skills of line management and internal HR coaching, the benefits of adopting a coaching style, and the issues involved when acting as an internal coach. 10. Executive Coaching: The overall competencies of an Executive Coach, types of issues brought to sessions and how to structure the Executive Coaching process. 11. Coaching Ethics and Good Professional Practice: Working to an ethical code, the role of supervision, boundary management and the importance of CPD. 12. Applying the Learning: Developing a strategy for practicing your coaching whether you are a line manager, internal HR specialist or independent business coach. Our philosophy of coach education The theoretical aspects of coach education are a vital aspect of learning to coach effectively but theory alone does not produce an excellent coach. Coaching, after all, is a practical activity and any quality coach training must be grounded in sound professional practice. This is why we devote so much attention to our practice/feedback model of coach development. At each workshop you work in small groups rotating around the roles of coach, coachee and observer, with an experienced Coach Practice Tutor (CPT) present at all times. The feedback and learning from these sessions is often the most significant part of the programme for many delegates. However, there is yet another fundamental dimension to advanced coach training - the personal development of the coach. We strongly believe that the coach needs a place to address and work on their own issues if they are to operate with the emotional intelligence required of an effective coach. Our coaching certificate pays special attention to this and is a hall-mark of our approach. We work, and train others to work with, the psychological dimensions of business and executive coaching. Our underpinning orientation is Gestalt psychology, and we explore the psychological and emotional levels that are present in the coaching relationship. Exploring this territory and its relation to performance greatly adds to the personal development of the coach in training. Finally, we are firm advocates of coaching supervision and see this as essential to sound professional practice, and so we build this into our workshop structure. Practice and skill development Skill development is achieved by regular coach practice / feedback sessions which are held at every workshop of the training programme. You work in small groups of three and take turns rotating through the roles of coach, coachee and observer. These are genuine sessions where the 5
6 coachee brings a live performance issue, not simply role plays. The quality of the feedback gained in these sessions is a hallmark of the training. Additionally, you are asked to build up a case-load of 4 6 coachees back in your work environment and coach regularly between workshops. By the end of the programme, you are expected to build up a minimum of 90 supervised hours of coaching practice. Supervision: Group supervision is provided at the workshops. In addition you are required to engage in a minimum of 6 hours of 1:1 supervision whilst you complete your 90 hours of coaching practice off the workshops (see costs section). Finally, there is a demonstration coaching session between a course leader and a member of the training group at most workshops. Personal development We strongly advocate the value of being coached yourself during the time you are on the training programme and can provide assistance with setting up these arrangements, and we encourage attendance on other developmental processes which might meet identified areas of learning. Practical information Dates The course is delivered over 16 days and is structured into six non residential workshops, all held at our premises, 3 Albion Place in central Leeds. 8 Testimonials Since completing the Post Graduate Certificate with PB Coaching, my professional and personal development has risen to new heights. The return on the original investment in the course has been twofold; firstly in professional and financial terms I have acquired business as a qualified coach worth 10 times the original investment through direct clients and through new networks developed on the back of my new qualification. Another spin-off is that I and two fellow students enjoyed our work together so much we decided to set up a new business providing coaching and professional/personal development programmes together. Secondly the personal impact of completing the certificate has been something of a revelation. It helped me embark on a journey of self-discovery which I continued on the Diploma course last year this was a profound experience for me and one that continues; frankly the personal development has been immeasurable it has changed my life. D. Scott, Director - Coaching and development consultancy The course was excellent and easily the best piece of personal and professional development I have ever been engaged in. The tutors were all excellent and I appreciated their integrity, experience and willingness to both challenge and support the group to ensure the most learning took place. Occupational Psychologist I gained a tremendous amount personally from attending the PB Coaching Postgrad. The experience challenged my own leadership style and caused me to reflect on the person I am and the person I want to be. I feel that this was very much as a consequence of the depth to which each topic area was explored. The real difference for me from other courses was the amount of this programme that was spent working at the psychological level. There has been a real benefit back at the organisation from my completion of this programme as I am using the learning to develop a Coaching Culture within the organisation as a principle vehicle to achieve significant culture change. In addition I am now a qualified resource for the organisation to use in delivering coaching sessions within the organisation reducing the need to pay for external coaching support. I would highly recommend PB Coaching when choosing a post grad programme as there are significant benefits for the individual and the organisation as a direct result of the approach taken by PB. Simon Barber, Chief Executive 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust I came to PB Coaching as an experienced coach and NLP Practitioner. The course exceeded my expectations. The facilitators were excellent. Their style was supportive and they were good role models. They created an environment for us to learn, experiment and bond as a group. The range of topics was challenging and broadening. I learnt much about coaching and much about myself. I feel more confident and competent as a coach. The administration team were excellent (especially Sue). Overall, this has been my best experience of learning with other people. Thank you. Paul Girling, Managing Director Independent Consultancy I was recommended this programme by someone who had previously attended and was told of how it had transformed both their coaching and how it had developed the individual as a person. The structure of the programme enables you to learn a vast amount about yourself and how this links to your effectiveness as a coach. The blend of learning styles used on the course really helps facilitate your learning - from experiential groups, coach practice, being coached, observing coaching, feedback, theory sessions and group discussion. Much of the learning has been about me as an individual that enables me to be a better coach. Much of the theory I am also able to apply in the workplace and it has certainly broadened my understanding of people and change. I cannot recommend the programme highly enough I loved every minute of it and am now enjoying putting what I have learnt into practice both personally and professionally. E. Bate, Sales Learning & Development Lead Nestle The postgraduate certificate has been insightful, challenging and extremely rewarding. On a personal level it has represented singularly the most impactful journey of self development I have experienced in my life to date. On a professional level, I have developed the skills and confidence to coach executives to a high standard, and have received exceptional feedback in coach practice to this effect, I thoroughly recommend this programme!
