Guidance and Information Pack PGCE (PCET)/Certificate in Education (PCET) My name is Fay and I enrolled on the PGCE to train as a teacher I am a keen dancer and have gained experience teaching at a private dance school but I wanted to gain a formal teaching qualification, which would enable me to teach schools and colleges with students aged 14+. During my course, I have completed my teaching practice in two local high schools with pupils aged 14 16. I had supportive mentors in the schools and enjoyed putting the PGCE module theories into practice! I have developed knowledge of curriculum design, behaviour, assessment and teaching and learning strategies. Round Two: (Subject to availability of places) 6 th July 2015 Interviews held from July September Round Three: (Late applications) 29 th August 2015 Interviews held in September This award is aimed at those wishing to gain the skills, knowledge and qualifications to secure a full teaching role in the Post Compulsory Education and Training sector, such as within: further education colleges sixth form colleges school sixth forms work based training adult and community education and training. A full role is defined as the delivery of teaching or training that involves: the planning (e.g. schemes of work and lesson planning) and the delivery of teaching and learning activity; the assessment of learners; and related student support. The full teaching role carries the full range of teaching responsibilities, whether on full time, part time, fractional, fixed term, temporary or agency basis. What will the course cover? The course is designed to develop your professional capabilities in becoming a self evaluative and reflective educational professional. You will develop your planning, resourcing, managing, assessing and evaluating skills in your specialist area and grow your understanding of post secondary education and how you might play an active role in its future development. This is a modular award, studied at Ashton Sixth Form College. You will be required to attend lectures and have secured prior to enrolment at least 100 hours of teaching in your chosen area across the course. PGCE (PCET) and Certificate in Education (PCET) will cover the same modules and will complete assignments at level 4 and 5, however PGCE (PCET) will also cover work at level 7. The modules of the course include: Module One: Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Post Compulsory Education and Training (PCET) The purpose of this module is the develop trainees knowledge, understanding and skills relating to teaching, learning and assessment in education and training. It includes understanding the role and responsibilities of a teacher in education and training; agreeing individual learning goals and planning; and delivering and assessing inclusive teaching and learning. It involves creating and maintaining an inclusive learning environment and evaluating own practice and also covers expectations in relation to the minimum core in teaching, learning and assessment. 3

Guidance and Information Pack PGCE (PCET)/Certificate in Education (PCET) Module Two: Theories, Principles and Models in Post Compulsory Education and Training (PCET) The purpose of this module is to develop trainees knowledge and understanding of theories, principles and models applied to education and training. It includes application of theories, principles and models of learning; communication and assessment in education and training; the application of theories and models of curriculum development within own area of specialism; and the application of theories and models of reflection and evaluation to the evaluation of own practice. Module Three: Developing Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Post Compulsory Education and Training (PCET) This unit is designed to develop trainees knowledge, understanding and skills relating to developing teaching, learning and assessment in education and training. It includes investigating practice in own area of specialism; applying theories, principles and models of learning; communication and assessment in relation to planning; and delivering and assessing inclusive teaching and learning. It also involves applying theories of behaviour management in creating and maintaining an inclusive learning environment and applying theories and models of reflection to evaluating own practice. It covers expectations in relation to the minimum core in teaching, learning and assessment. Module Four: Action Research and Wider Professional Practice in Post Compulsory Education and Training (PCET) The purpose of this module is to develop trainees knowledge, understanding and skills relating to wider professional practice in education and training. It includes understanding professionalism and professional values in education and training; the policy context of education and training; the impact of being accountable to stakeholders and external bodies; and the organisational context of education and training. Completion of this module also requires an understanding of the nature and purpose of action research and conduct action based research on a change to your practice. 4

Guidance and Information Pack PGCE (PCET)/Certificate in Education (PCET) Teaching Practice: Students on the Certificate in Education (PCET) or the PGCE (PCET) are required to have access to at least 100 hours of teaching practice over the duration of the course within a recognised location, as defined within the LLUK regulations. If you are already teaching or have secured teaching practice yourself, it is required as part of the entry requirements that your manager confirms that you will be able to fulfil the teaching, attendance and study requirements of the programme. If you do not currently have access to this teaching practice, from September 2014, Ashton Sixth Form College are able to offer teaching practice in a number of subjects within the College. If you would like to undertake your teaching practice at College, please indicate on your application form. Following a successful course interview, you will then be invited to a second interview with the Head of Subject in your area. Please note that teaching practice within the College is not guaranteed. The College also works in partnership with other colleges and may be able to offer information, advice and guidance on how teaching practice at these institutions may be secured. If this is something that you are interested in, please indicate on your application and this possibility will be discussed further at interview. How is the course assessed? The Certificate in Education (PCET) and PGCE (PCET) are assessed through a range of formative and summative assessment methods, which include assignment writing, presentations and observations. The PTLLS short course is assessed through a number of tasks, including some academic writing and an observed micro teaching session. How long does the course take? The full time route will take one year to complete, with attendance to the following lectures and teaching practice: Monday: 9.00am 12.00pm lectures Tuesday: 9.00am 1.00pm lectures Thursday 5.30pm 8.30pm lectures A minimum of two full days (or equivalent) of teaching practice per week. The part time route will take two years to complete, with attendance to one or two of the lecture sessions above each week, however this may vary and will be discussed with you further later in the application process. You will also be expected to spend at least one full day (or equivalent) on teaching practice per week. How much does the course cost? The fees of the one year full time route are 5,600. The two year part time route costs 1,800 in the first year and 2,100 in the second, totalling 3,900. Students accepted onto this programme are generally entitled to a tuition fee loan from Student Finance England. Further information on student finance can be found in the accompanying Student Finance 6

Students might also ask their workplace for support in funding this course. Where can I progress to? On successful completion of the Certificate in Education (PCET), you may wish to top up to a full Degree and on successful completion of the PGCE (PCET), you may like to progress to studying at Masters level. What will happen at interview? At the interview, you will need to bring along and present proof of any relevant qualifications, including English and Maths; any academic qualifications you may have; evidence of accreditation of prior learning, such as previous teaching qualifications; and evidence of 100 hours of teaching practice. The interview consists of: An interview with a small panel An ICT task A writing task A presentation Anyone who is wishing to be considered for teaching practice within the College itself will also be required to attend an additional subject based interview with the relevant Head of Subject. 7
