1 There are a variety of choices for student accommodations with costs ranging from 22,000-50,000B a semester (5 months). Non-air-conditioned rooms are less. A room usually has a bed, desk and chair for furniture, a closet and an en suite bathroom with shower. Most rooms and apartments have no kitchen facilities but a hot plate or electric pot can be purchased inexpensively. Some apartments offer small refrigerators, microwave ovens, water delivery, TV and cable, and internet access for extra fees. It is very easy to purchase freshly cooked food everywhere as well as abundant fresh fruit and vegetables so there is no need to cook. As you will see, this is the usual practice of many Thais. When renting an apartment, it is a good idea to take a Thai friend with you, as they will know what is and isn t expensive, and to shop around. Some questions to ask when renting an apartment What are the water and electricity rates? Is there a telephone in the room and what is the charge for the service and use? Some apartments charge a fee just for having a telephone in the room, whether you use it or not, and then charge for the calls you make on top of that. How much does the telephone cost to use, and for how long? Be aware that telephones in most apartments have a set limit of time per call before the line cuts out. You will be charged a set rate, for example, 5 baht, per call. How long is the contract for? The usual period of time is three months, but some apartments will want you to stay for six months. What are the rules, if any, for the use of the room? Most apartments will have rules about the use of the room, make sure you can live with them. Is there a port for internet, and if not, what is the charge to make the connection possible? Generally the cost of the connection by the telephone company is not expensive, but the apartment may want you to pay a lot of money for the privilege. Also check the rate per hour for using the net. 2 Make sure you look closely at the room, and the area in which the building is in. Here are some things to look for. Where is the building? If it is in a soi, is the soi well-lit and is the area safe? The local people will be able to tell you if there are any problems. Is the building near water? Water means mosquitoes. Is there a security guard, or security cameras in the building? Has the door got a lockable door handle, and a security chain or peep-hole? Some apartments have a system where the only way to close the door is to bolt it from the inside, or lock it via a padlock from the outside. There is no door handle. If you are living with another, this could be inconvenient. Also make sure that there is a way to check who knocks on your door, without opening it. It is a bonus if the door has a mosquito net. Does the air circulate, with the door shut? Thailand can be a very hot and humid country, you will want a room where the air flows freely with the door shut, so that the room does not become stuffy. Is there somewhere to hang hand-washing, and clothes that you have machine washed? For those of you who have clothes that must be hand-washed, or wash your clothes by machine, check that there is a place that you can hang your washing to dry. What kind of furniture is included? Many rooms are rented out without including furniture. If you want furniture, you will have to ask what, if any, is available and at what cost. Changes to the room? If you find a room you like, but it is missing something that you want, you can ask if they could make a change to the room. This may include putting a mirror in the bathroom, arranging an internet port, or putting nails in the wall so that you can hang picture or a clock. This will cost extra, and you will have to negotiate the price with the owner.
3 The International Program in which you are enrolled or the Office of International Affairs can assist you in finding accommodation. However, we usually reserve space for new incoming students in Amarin Mansion and New World City Hotel. After you check out other accommodations and become familiar with the environment, you can decide to stay or move to a new apartment. Rental costs may change and you may have to pay for "extras" such as water, TV, small refrigerator, etc. Thammasat Dormitory Thammasat (Tha Pra Chan campus) does not have on-campus housing. However there is a Thammasat dormitory in Talingchan area, about a 30-45 minute bus ride. It is a six-floor, co-ed dorm with a 500-bed capacity.
