It was great to see so many of you in attendance. And what a great band! Thanks again to Larry and Jamie Wheir. Tom Davis and the Race Team already have a record number of boats signed up for the winter series. Peter Gelinas jumped in with a Holiday Bonfire at Des Moines on Dec. 15. Join your fellow Club Members for some great holiday music. Buzz and Tish Greenman have some truly neat cruises in planning with at least one brand new destination stay tuned! And don t forget to mark your calendars for the New Year s Cruise to Arabella s. Next time you are visiting the Des Moines Marina, don t forget to check out the pictures on the bulletin board. Many thanks to Jeannie Walker for the artistic display. Speaking of pictures, Rose Edmiston reminds us that she could use some more pictures of club members enjoying our events for the history archives. If you have any keepers please get them to her. Let s have even more fun this year, but remember to boat safely. The Coast Guard reminds us that boating accidents have claimed two lives and injured 10 others this fall. Excessive speed, alcohol consumption, improper application of the navigation rules, lack of lighting at night, and not posting lookouts contributed to these and other accidents. Tom Schacht had heart surgery last Thursday, Oct.30 th at St. Joseph s Hospital in Tacoma. I talked to him on Sunday Nov. 2 nd and he reported the surgery went well. He expects to be in the hospital for three or four days more before transferring to a nursing home for a full recovery. The hospital phone no. is (253) 426 4101 if you want to call and wish him a speedy recovery. See you on the water! Tom The new Board of Trustees has had their first meeting and I am really impressed with the leadership I see. Cruises, Races, and Social events are being put together with one eye to tradition and another to improving them even further. To all of our Veterans, past and you for giving so much to what it is, a land of present, we thank make our country possibilities.
Social Corner Peter Gelinas, Chairman TTPYC ROCKS THE HOUSE WITH THE TROPICS Change of Watch brought more than a change of officers this year; it brought a whole new attitude, with a relaxed tropical theme & an emphasis on fun. Our Commodore, Paul Jones addressed the membership & recognized officers & handed out awards. Tom Spohn advanced to Commodore & introduced his cast of officers for 2009. Soon after we had all in attendance on the dance floor & swaying to the music ok, most did more than sway! It s been a rough time on the membership with strikes, economic uncertainty, and roller coaster stock market & many private & personal traumas & worries, but for one night we got to set it all aside & cut loose. We have some fabulous dancers in the club & everyone got in on the action. We want to thank all those who helped us put this on & all those who participated. Chris Thompson at Fairwood performed culinary magic & gave us a tropical meal to remember. With no budget left for decorations I hoped that each person would be a colorful addition to the room. Everyone far exceeded our expectations! Check out the pictures on the bulletin board by Anthony s taken by Jeanne Walker. Next year Peter & Amy Gelinas will head the social chair, be sure to offer a helping hand, & respond to RSVPs as requested. The membership has made great strides in using the web which saves time & money. Thank you all, it s been a great time serving the membership.. Larry & Jamie Wheir For all of you who keep asking: The TROPICS can be reached at:gregboehme@comcast.net website;http://web.mac.com/gregboehme/iweb/tropics/home.html Greg & The TROPICS 2 PLANNING AHEAD TO THE HOLIDAYS Christmas time is just around the corner. For the yacht clubs Christmas social event we are suggesting an informal gathering of Club Members to take place at the Des Moines Creek Park on December 15th from 7:10 to 7:30pm. The large Argosy Christmas ship will be parked there. On shore at the park a huge bonfire will be burning while the Christmas ship b lasts out a zillion watts of seasonal music over the loudspeakers. People on the Argosy parade (following) ship will go topside to hear the music which is also very easily heard on shore. There will also be a number of private boats that motor out to hear the music as well. After awhile the Christmas ship moves to a position just off Dash Point where the bonfire and music is repeated. Come one and all for the bonfire, fellowship, merriment, and music by the Rainier Youth Concert Choir. http://www.argosycruises.com/themecruises/xmasschedule.cfm#schedule A suggestion for an evening out; go watch Joey Jewell Nov 15/16, 2008 Auburn Avenue Theatre, with Swing Session and Matthew Vail. Go to the Social Page on website to obtain PDF for information. It should be a enjoyable night of Frank Sinatra aka, Joey Jewell. He will also be performing at the KIXI New Year's, Westin Hotel, with Swing Session Joey Jewell and Matthew Vail.
Race Fleet Corner Tom Davis, Race Fleet Captain We have had our change of watch and I am honored and excited to be your new Race Fleet Captain. Before I talk about the coming year I would like to thank Pat Stewart for the great job he has done in the past year. He has run Race Fleet with the same preparation and precision that he runs his own race program and we all know how successful that has been. Thanks Pat. I was privileged to sit on a panel implemented by Pat Waters with five other guys who wanted to see what we could come up with to put more life back into our racing program. Using the success of The Mid Sound Summer Social as a model and looking at other successful programs in the area we have come up with a plan. If you go to our web site www.ttpyc.org and then click on the Racing tab. Take a look at Rejuvenating the Race Fleet. Let me know what you think. Also, while you re there take a look at Crew List. Sue Waters has put together a blog site that allows you to help build a crew list and also make yourself available to help new sailors learn how racing works by either crewing or having experienced sailors help them crew their boats. The last race of the 2008 Winter Series will be held on November 8 th. Bill Walton and his crew have been doing a great job. This is going to be the last race for the 2008 season so even if you haven t raced any of the earlier races in the series, come on out. There will be an after race hamburger barbeque and trophy presentation at the quest dock. We are planning on doing this at about 2:00. Everyone is welcome. See you there.
