The NSW government has made changes to the provision of vocational education and training in NSW through its Smart and Skilled reforms that commenced 1 January 2015. Smart and Skilled provides eligible students with: an entitlement to government-subsidised training up to and including Certificate III (including all apprenticeships and some traineeships); and government funding for higher-level courses (Certificate IV and above) in targeted priority areas, subject to funding availability. To be eligible for a TAFE NSW government subsidised place individuals must be: an Australian citizen, permanent resident or humanitarian visa holder, or New Zealand citizen; and aged 15 years or older; and no longer at school; and living or working in NSW. If you already have a Certificate IV or higher you will not be eligible for subsidised training at Certificate III or below, except for apprenticeship or traineeship qualifications. Some courses are subsidised by the NSW Government. Fees for funded (subsidised) places in a course are set by the NSW Government. If you are eligible, you will only pay a set portion of the cost of training.
