8 PARENTS AND CAREER ADVISORS POLYTECHNIC WEST REALISES THAT HELPING YOUR CHILD DECIDE WHICH OPTION TO TAKE WHEN IT COMES TO FURTHER EDUCATION CAN BE DAUNTING. PRACTICAL STEPS FOR PARENTS Below are some steps you can take to help your child succeed in the changing world of education, work and training. WHERE TO START? Students are more likely to choose a career which suits them if they understand their own likes and dislikes. As a parent, you can help your child develop self-awareness by discussing these simple ideas with them. Remember, skills they use at school, at work, at home, in the community and on the sporting field are all relevant. Ask your child what they have and have not enjoyed learning, and why Support your child when they want to try new things and expand their horizons Pursue new interests together to reinforce the importance of learning at all ages Help your child get to know what they are good at Help your child to investigate jobs that relate to their interests. WHAT S NEXT? Most tertiary education courses will require a pass mark in English or its equivalent. Many will also require a pass in maths. Polytechnic West recommends that English and math based courses be completed by those students hoping to continue into further education. Talk to school staff about their performance, strengths and abilities Ensure there is a balance between study, work, rest and play Provide time and space for homework Set tasks around the home to encourage responsible work habits Encourage participation in voluntary, casual or part time work so skills and work practices can be learned Encourage your child to keep their options open; the wider the range for consideration, the more likely they are to find one that works for them Interview friends, family or neighbours in occupations of interest Go to career expos and open days. PROSPECTIVE STUDENT LIAISON Polytechnic West s Prospective Student Liaison team is available for: Campus tours (Armadale, Balga, Bentley, Carlisle, Midland, Jandakot, Thornlie) Parent information evenings Career expos I BELIEVE A VET PATHWAY IN SCHOOL PROVIDES A GREAT INSIGHT INTO WHAT YOU CAN ACHIEVE IN YOUR CHOSEN CAREER. Encourage your child to keep their options open when selecting their subjects for further study and remind them to take their time. Online workshops Presentation bookings. The team can also present information on pathways (from high school to vocational study to university), course information (including associate degrees), entrance requirements and applications. ROBERT RUBERY 2014 VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING BEAZLEY MEDALIST For further information please contact the Prospective Student Liaison team on I was finishing year 11 and 12 at high school and had a passion for computers, IT and digital media. This passion led me to taking the more hands-on VET for Schools pathway at Polytechnic West. I thought it was a great opportunity to improve myself over time, instead of applying for a computer science degree at university after year 12; which I thought was too soon. This pathway appealed to me because I got to have more flexibility, keeping my options open. I thoroughly enjoyed it and believe it is a great way to learn industry specific skills you would otherwise miss out on in the ordinary high school stream with ATAR classes, then jumping straight to university. I d say honestly to anyone thinking about what to do; give the VET pathway consideration and don t dismiss it as a less effective option, because it will definitely take you closer to where you want to go in life. All the work experience has helped me grow as a person

Polytechnic West has been incredibly supportive of me in all my endeavours over the last few years. The lecturers are extremely knowledgeable and all bring their extensive experience from working in the industry to the classroom. I ve been truly blessed that at my age, in this industry, I ve been given a second chance that I can do something else with my life, and not many people have that opportunity. Granted, I had to use some initiative of my own to get there, but we have an industry that supports such initiative and that s really a bonus. Get out there and do it, because the opportunities and training pathways now exist

My first year on the job was at the Mount Whaleback mine site on the outskirts of town. There were not many girls around the site, and going in at 16 it was a bit intimidating, but it didn t take long for that to go away. I love my job and I know it s what I want to do so at the end of the day all that other stuff doesn t matter. I settled in really well at Polytechnic West. The facilities were huge and way better than what I could have expected. The lecturers didn t just do the minimum; there was plenty of help. They always backed me up. I m definitely keen to upskill at some point; I want to do a Certificate IV in Fluid Power. Probably not right away though, I might settle into life as a fully qualified fitter first. 43

DANIEL LI LA JUDGE AWARD BEST YOUNG BAKING APPRENTICE IN AUSTRALASIA I finished an engineering degree at uni and decided to start a baking apprenticeship on a whim for a bit of fun. Every single lecturer at Polytechnic West has been extremely supportive and have all been willing to go out of their way to help me out. I want to travel overseas to learn from bakers around the world. Bread is done differently in every corner of the world, so there are always new things to learn. I was very nervous, as entering the LA Judge competition was the first time I had done anything like it. After spending three days with the candidates from the other states, it was clear that the level of competition was extremely high. It was surreal and completely unexpected to hear my name announced at the ceremony
