4 Introduction At TAFE Queensland, anything s possible. The benefits of tertiary study are well recognised and TAFE is an integral part of that picture. The supportive environment offered by TAFE prepares many people for university-level qualifications and provides credit and reduced study time at university along the way. Increasingly, professionals, high-achieving university graduates and people from a wide variety of backgrounds are also turning to TAFE for the quality, value-for-money training that provides the challenges and practical programs they are seeking. TAFE Queensland has developed strong links with universities. Credit transfer arrangements are in place between TAFE Queensland and all the major Queensland (and some interstate) universities across a broad range of vocational training areas. Am I eligible? This publication helps you to locate information about credit transfer arrangements between the whole of TAFE Queensland (that is, qualifications available at any of the TAFE institutes) and various Queensland universities. In many cases, individual TAFE institutes have separate arrangements with Queensland universities in addition to those covered in this publication. TAFE also gives credit for university study you may have completed. For further details contact the relevant institute. International students This publication is primarily for domestic students. However, where programs are open for international student enrolments and both the relevant TAFE and university are registered through CRICOS, credit may apply. Not all dual awards apply. Contact the international area of the TAFE and university concerned for more information. How do I apply? Before enrolling, you should always contact both the relevant TAFE institute and the relevant university to make sure you have the correct and up-to-date information, and to find out the necessary application procedures. See page 5 for university contact details and page 31 for TAFE institute contact details. What types of credit are there when moving from TAFE to university? Credit transfer can be: Block credit: Credit for a whole year or stage of a university qualification. This credit is awarded for the whole of the TAFE qualification and does not depend on any specific units of competency or modules. Specified credit: Credit is based on the student having a completed TAFE qualification that includes specified units of competency or modules which are then mapped to particular components within the university qualification. Unspecified credit: Credit for components of a university qualification, comprising elective or other optional components only. This may be up to the equivalent of a whole year but usually not all of the first year of a university qualification. Some applicants may have grounds for credit transfer other than those listed in this publication. Students who believe they may qualify for credit transfer should make individual application to the relevant university. Remember that availability of credit does not guarantee entry into a university qualification often there are restricted numbers of places available at university, and sometimes there are additional prerequisites necessary for entry. Some TAFE programs, for which guidelines or formal agreements have been established, are no longer current. However, they remain listed (indicated with a single asterisk) as the university will continue to give credit to TAFE students holding these older qualifications. Can I get credit when I apply to study at TAFE? Many university graduates undertake further studies at TAFE Queensland to give them additional practical knowledge and skills they can use in the workplace. Each TAFE institute will be able to advise if any credit applies to university graduates or other people applying to study at TAFE. TAFE also offers Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which is a process to recognise your formal or informal training and education, work experience or general life experience. TAFE institutes can offer support and advice on this process. Disclaimer While every effort has been made to ensure the information in this publication is accurate, changes may occur at any time. Contact TAFE Queensland and the relevant university to obtain the most up-to-date information. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should note that although no offence is intended, the publication may contain images that cause distress. My TAFE teacher encouraged me not to give up on my life long desire to study law. 26 Other pathways to university Getting into university In order to get into university, at the very least you will need a Tertiary Entrance Rank or an OP (Overall Position score from Queensland senior schooling). There may also be prerequisites or other requirements. You may also be eligible for credit for any TAFE studies you have completed, which may help reduce your study time and cost at university level. You should always check all the details with the relevant university and the relevant TAFE institute. This publication concentrates on information about getting credit for your TAFE studies, but there are other ways in which TAFE Queensland can help you on your pathway to university. For further information on getting into university, consult the website of the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre: Adult Tertiary Preparation Program The Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation Program offers students the opportunity to satisfy university prerequisites. Successful completion of this program provides a Tertiary Entrance Rank that is used by universities to select students for their programs. Depending on your performance in the Adult Tertiary Preparation Program, you may achieve a Tertiary Entrance Rank of up to 91 (which is approximately equivalent to OP 6). If you combine your performance in the Adult Tertiary Preparation Program with results in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (a special aptitude test that demonstrates your potential for tertiary study), your Tertiary Entrance Rank can increase to 98 (which is approximately equivalent to OP 2). If undertaking an Adult Tertiary Preparation Program at TAFE, it is recommended that you consider including the course university study skills, as you may obtain credit at some universities for their study skills preparatory courses. Improve your Tertiary Entrance Rank Studies in Certificate (III or IV), Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree programs at TAFE Queensland may also provide a pathway to most universities by potentially improving your Tertiary Entrance Rank. The table below shows minimum Tertiary Entrance Ranks that may be given for successful completion of TAFE Certificates (III or IV), Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas or Associate Degrees. Competency-Based Training with Performance Level Assessment can lead to an increased Tertiary Entrance Rank. For more information on Tertiary Entrance Ranks derived in this manner, please contact the Tertiary Placement and Performance Unit on telephone (07) Some universities also accord bonus ranks for completion of TAFE qualifications. Queensland University of Technology and Griffith University for example, will allocate a minimum ranking of 87 (OP 8) if you finish a diploma and a minimum ranking of 93 (OP 5) when you complete an advanced diploma. Contact the universities for details of any such bonus schemes. Griffith University will allocate these rankings only for study at Brisbane North, Metropolitan South, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast Institutes of TAFE, Southbank Institute of Technology and SkillsTech Australia. Dual awards In many cases, credit transfer arrangements are incorporated in dual awards. That is, you can choose to study a combined diploma/degree program and have a guaranteed place in the university program once you successfully complete your TAFE studies. You don t have to reapply through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC); you can gain practical experience and you may be able to complete the whole program in the time it takes to do a degree. One of the other benefits of a dual award is the combination of practical hands-on skills with theoretical knowledge, which is always highly valued by employers. With a dual award qualification, you may also be able to get part-time work in your chosen field while you continue to study for your degree. Different TAFE institutes have different dual awards with different universities. Dual awards across TAFE Queensland are listed on the following pages. TAFE qualification Minimum tertiary entrance rank (competency-based training) Maximum tertiary entrance rank (using performance level assessment or special tertiary admissions test result) Certificate III 68 (approximately OP 16) 82 (approximately OP 10) Certificate IV 74 (approximately OP 13) 89 (approximately OP 7) Diploma 82 (approximately OP 10) 91 (approximately OP 6) Advanced Diploma/ Associate Degree 91 (approximately OP 6) 98 (approximately OP 2) assuming competency is achieved in every course (subject) 26 TAFE and university pathways
