Dear Parents and/or Guardians: In an effort to provide additional opportunities for those students desiring an extension of the school year, we are offering a junior high summer school program again this year. All summer school classes will begin on Monday, June 8 and end Friday, June 26. Classes run Monday thru Friday. Classes will meet at Lincoln Junior High School, located at 1320 Olympus Drive. Transportation will be available for summer school this year. Information regarding your student s bus number and location of drop-off and pick-up will be sent to your home by the NCUSD 203 Transportation Department. BUS TRANSPORTATION is ONLY available for Session 1 arrival which is at 8:30 a.m. and at the end of Session 2, which is at 12:00 p.m. The deadline for registration that includes transportation is May 20, 2015. Eligibility for transportation will follow the regular school year bussing policies found at: http://www.naperville203.org/domain/874. Course offerings are listed in following pages. Summer School Program is offered on a tuition basis only for all courses. In-District tuition is $160 per 1.5 hour course/out-of-district is $240 per 1.5 hour course In-District tuition is $320 per 3.0 hour course/out-of-district tuition is $480 per 3.0 hour course. A non-refundable cancellation fee of $25 per class will be charged for students canceling registration after May 29, 2015. No refunds will be granted after June 10, 2015. 2015 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS All courses run Monday, June 8, 2015 - Friday, June 26, 2015 (Monday thru Friday) CODE HS Grades: Incoming 6 th -8 th CodeHS is an online program which will introduce students to programming and computer science principles in order to spread the knowledge of computer science to students through on online medium. In this self-directed and self-paced class, students will learn the fundamentals of computer science while creating their own animations, graphics, and games for the web. Students will acquire knowledge through watching videos, working in the browser and then getting help and direct feedback from Summer School Staff. ENRICHED MATH Grades: 6 th - 8 th This course is designed for Honors Math students entering 6 th, 7 th, or 8 th grades. This class is not intended to fill in learning gaps or cover material that students will learn the following year in Honors Math. Rather, this class will engage students in challenging math related activities in order to help increase critical thinking skills and improve analytical abilities. This course does not meet the requirements of junior high Honors Math. While the class is geared for Honors Math students, students in general education who show outstanding math achievement, motivation, and passion for math may also be considered. If the student is not currently enrolled in junior high Honors Math, a short letter of recommendation from his/her current math teacher should accompany the registration form or be emailed to jdiscipio@naperville203.org. ESSENTIAL LITERACY SKILLS Grades: 6 th -8 th This course strengthens listening and note taking skills and provides instruction in reading and writing for students. It focuses on improving reading strategies and comprehension skills as well as accuracy and fluency. Additionally, CRISS and basic test taking strategies will be reviewed. Basic organizational skills that facilitate the development of student responsibility will also be emphasized. 3

5 th GRADE MATHEMATICS Grades: Students who have COMPLETED 5 th GRADE This course, for students who have completed 5 th grade, is designed to review fundamental skills of multiplication and division, operations with fractions and decimals and basic expressions/equations/inequalities as contained in the 5 th grade curriculum. This class is designed for students with below-average skills in math who need reinforcement before entering the 6 th grade. 6 th GRADE MATHEMATICS Grades: Students who have completed 6 th grade This course, for students who have completed 6 th grade, analyzes the student s present performance in the 6 TH grade mathematics curriculum and provides instruction in basic computation, fractions, decimals, percents, measurement, and problem solving. This class is designed for students with belowaverage skills in math who need reinforcement before entering the 7 th grade. 7 th GRADE MATHEMATICS Grades: Students who have completed 7 th grade This course, for students who have completed 7 th grade, analyzes the student s present performance in the 7 th grade Math and provides instruction in the focus areas of geometry, number sense and basic computation. This class is designed for students with below-average skills in math who need reinforcement of 7 th grade math concepts before entering the 8 th grade. PLTW: FLIGHT AND SPACE 3 hours per day Grades: Incoming Grades 6 th -8 th Do you have an interest in airplanes, rockets and space? The exciting world of aerospace comes alive through the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Flight and Space summer course. Students explore airplanes, rockets, aerodynamics, and flying, living and working in space. They will use their knowledge to design, build, and test a working aircraft wing. Custom-built simulation software allows students to experience space travel and driving and navigating on the moon. Take Off this summer for the exciting world of flight and space. READ, WRITE and RUN Grades: Incoming Grades 6 th -8 th The academic focus of the course is literacy based, offering several different learning opportunities for students to work collaboratively in the following areas: Literature Circles, Vocabulary Building, Socratic Seminars, and Readers Theater. A fitness component has been incorporated into this course to help fireup the synapses enabling the brain to build new bridges for future learning! 4

SHAKESPEARE IN THE SUMMER Grades: Incoming Grades 6 th -8 th This course is designed for Project Idea (PI) students entering 6 th, 7 th, or 8 th grades. During this course, students will read and compare modern day Shakespeare to classical Shakespeare. They will also prepare small group and individual performances using costumes, make-up, scenery, props, and movement. In addition, students will participate in character development, voice, and movement workshops. This course does not meet the requirements of the junior high PI class. While the class is geared for PI students, students in general education who show outstanding critical thinking, motivation, and passion may also be considered. If the student is not currently enrolled in PI, a short letter of recommendation from his/her current language arts teacher should be emailed to jdiscipio@naperville203.org. 5

REGISTRATION Registration will begin on January 7 th, 2015. Students planning to attend Junior High Summer School should register for courses as soon as possible, as enrollment is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Some classes do fill up and close quickly. Also, a minimum student enrollment figure for each class must be met in order to run the course. Register for Junior High Summer School using one of the following methods: ONLINE Register online at https://naperville203.revtrak.net. (Please Note: There is an additional 3.6% transaction fee on the total tuition bill). OR 1. Click on Summer Learning & Athletic Camps 2. Scroll down to the Junior High Summer School heading 2. Click on the subject area that you are interested in 3. Click on the course number that you wish to register for 4. Credit cards are the only method of payment for ONLINE registration. PAPER- Using the form on the last page of this packet. 1. Registration forms must be signed by the student s parent or guardian. 2. All students need properly completed forms and the tuition/course payment at the time of registration. 3. Cash and check should be used for PAPER registration. 4. If you register your child using the paper registration packet, you will receive an email confirmation once your paperwork is processed. 6
