Double-click the time in the lower right-hand corner of the Desktop on the taskbar. Click on the tab labeled "Time Zone." c. Make sure the time zone is set to Central Time i. A checkmark should be in the box labeled: "Automatically adjust clock to daylight savings time " Click OK 2. Create Migrator Account a. Navigate to Local Users and Groups to add New User i. Right-click on My Computer, Select Manage i Select Local Users and Groups and expand Right-click Users and select New User in the drop down box. 3
b. Add "migrator" as a new user i. Add new user in the New User dialog box i Assign "migrator" as the username for the new (administrative) account In the "Full Name" blank, add your name (for reference) Assign and confirm the password, which is "M1gration" v. Uncheck the item "User must change password at next logon" vi. Click Create and then Close. 3. Assign Migrator Account to Administrator group a. Get into Users Properties i. (Right-click My Computer, Select Manage, Select Users) b. Open the new Migrator account Properties box i. Click the "Member Of" tab Click "Add" at the bottom left area of the box 4
c. Type "administrators" in the Select Groups dialog box i. Type "administrators" in the blank labeled Enter the object names to select" i Click "OK" Click "OK" in the next dialog box to finalize 4. Copy files & folders from the user s profile a. Get into C:\Documents & Settings\UserName (Where UserName is the current profile where the user saves their documents.) i. Open My Computer or press + E on the keyboard. Locate the local Hard Disk (usually C:\). i Create a folder named BackUp on the Hard Disk. Create four subfolders in Back Up Folder named Favorites, Documents, Desktop, and Start Up v. Open the each folder (Desktop, Favorites, Documents, and Start up) on the C: Drive. Then in the Back up folder you created, move all information within each folder and then paste it in the new subfolders you created in step vi. Once all files have been copied, select all of the directories in BackUp, right click one of the selected folders, and select properties. Make a note of the Size or Size on Disk properties and compare these with each login that you do throughout the instructions. Also spot check the files with each login to ensure that the Migrator account and the client s account can see the files. 5
5. Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP a. Get into Local Area Connection i. Right-click on the My Network Place or Network Neighborhood Click Properties i In the Network Connections dialog box Right-click on the Local Area Connection v. Select Properties. b. Check IP address settings i. Scroll down in the Local Area Connection dialog box i Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Click Properties Be sure you are now in the General tab area of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties; while there v. Verify that the check box is checked for "Obtain an IP address automatically" vi. Click Advanced. c. Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP 6
i. Click the WINS tab to enter the next area i From the WINS tab, confirm that Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP is selected. Click OK on the Advanced Window Click OK on the TCPIP Window, to bring you back to Network Properties dialog box. v. Verify that the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is checked. vi. v vi Click Close Verify that Client for Microsoft Networks is checked Click OK 6. Remove Novell Client a. Navigate to the Local Area Connections i. Right-click My Network Places Select Properties b. Remove Novell Client in Local Area Connection Properties i. Click Novell Client for Windows (should be near the top of the list) i Click Uninstall "Yes" in the confirmation of the Uninstall request Check the size of the folders in the BackUp directory as well as perform a spot check to make sure all files are still available. c. Reboot if asked and log in as Migrator d. Join OSU Domain 7
e. Get into "Computer Name" tab My Computer Properties i. Right-click My Computer i Click Properties Click the "Computer Name" tab In the Computer Name tab, click the Change button v. Click the Domain radio button in the Computer Name Changes box vi. v Type OSU in the blank Click OK f. When asked to authenticate: i. Log in as you, using your personal account g. At the Welcome screen, click OK i. You will need to restart the computer. i Click OK Click OK to restart the computer h. Check the size of the folders in the BackUp directory as well as perform a spot check to make sure all files are still available. i. Reboot 7. First-Time Client Log-In to the new Domain a. Computer restart and initial login screen b. Have the client log in with her or his new username and password. 8
i. Click OK 8. Verification of DNS settings (or ipconfig check) a. Open a Command window i. Click Start; then click Run In the Run dialog box: type in "cmd" (without quotations) b. At the Command prompt, get IP address i. Then type in "ipconfig /all" and then press Enter c. Verify the IP addresses i. Note: If these settings are not correct You many need to change these settings manually. d. Check the size of the folders in the BackUp directory as well as perform a spot check to make sure all files are still available. 9
9. Add the client's new Administrator account a. Log into the MIGRATOR account i. Use "migrator" for the login name i Log into the Local Domain (not OSU domain) Check the size of the folders in the BackUp directory as well as perform a spot check to make sure all files are still available. b. Get to Administrator's properties i. Right-click on the My Computer icon i Select Manage Expand the Local Users and Groups file by clicking on the "+" sign. v. Click the Groups folder vi. v Double-click the Administrators group and click the Add button in Administrator Properties vi In the space provided "Enter the object names to select" Type: osu\[username], where "[username]" is the new username the client received when activating her/his account. ix. Click Check Names x. Click "OK" 10
c. Log in with the client's personal migration service account (not Migrator) if you get an Authentication dialog box i. Click OK Close the computer management console 10. Copy the User Profile a. Get into User Profiles i. Right-click My Computer on the Desktop and select Properties Click the Advanced tab in the System Properties dialog box i In User Profiles, click the Settings button under User Profiles 11
b. Copy User Profile i. Select the user profile with previous username Make sure the file size is less than 2 GB NOTE: If the username is the same as that of the computer, choose the profile that begins with the name of the computer, rather than the one that begins with osu ALSO NOTE: If the user profile is greater than 2 GB, find the largest folder and copy the contents of this folder to a temporary folder on the root of C:\. i Click "Copy To" c. Copy profile to the new username folder in the Copy To dialog box i. Click the Browse button i Browse to the C: drive Browse to the Documents and Settings folder. Select the folder with the new username (in this case, "pistolpete") NOTE: If the new username is the same as the old, select the folder that is followed by.osu or.000 or some other designation v. Click OK d. Put the new profile into "osu\[username]" i. Click Change on the Copy To dialog box. In the space provided, type: osu\[username] 12
i Example: osu\pistolpete (where "[username]" is the new username the client received when activating their account. Click Check Names If the name is found,log in when prompted to user account. The format of the displayed name will change: the username will be followed by parentheses and the firstname.lastname@okstate.edu email address will show. Click "OK" e. Enter your personal migration account if you get an Authentication dialog box i. Enter your personal Migration Service (personal migration) account (not Migrator). Click OK to begin i In the next dialog box (Copy To), click OK to begin copying the profile You will be notified that the existing folder with the new username will be deleted and rebuilt. Click Yes. If a problem occurs while attempting to delete the folder restart the computer, and begin again at Step 4. DO NOT USE "LOG OFF!! During the file progress the cursor will change to an hourglass and no other indicator will appear. Once the copy process is complete, the Copy To dialogue box will disappear. f. If the profile copy fails, settings will be lost, however the files that were saved should still be located in the BackUp directory. g. Close dialog boxes and restart computer to finish the process 11. Client Login to the OSU Domain a. Logging in if Novell Client login screen appears 13
i. Click the Workstation Only checkbox. This will leave only the Windows tab available. i Click the Advanced button to expand the options Ensure that the From field (at the bottom) lists the domain name (i.e. osu) and not a computer name (i.e. PetesPC) b. Logging in if the Windows login screen appears i. Click the Options button to expand the options if the domain field is not visible. i Ensure that the Log on to field lists the domain name (i.e. osu) and not a computer name (i.e. PetesPC) Enter the username and password the user obtained during activation c. If the profile copy failed, move (not copy) the folders from BackUp to the new profile created when the user logged in. d. If the profile copy did not fail, delete the Back up folder you created in step 4a i 12. AFTER MAIL MIGRATION: a. Delete the temporary administrator accounts i. Get into Administrator account (see #3 above for more details) i Delete the temporary administrator accounts In the User's menu, select the Migrator account Click Remove v.
