Ex.No 3 Installation of Active Directory Service Active Directory (AD) is a directory service created by Microsoft. Active Directory uses a number of standardized protocols to provide a variety of network services, including: Lightweight Directory Access Protocol LDAP, the industry standard directory access protocol, compatible with many management and query applications. Active Directory supports LDAPv3 and LDAPv2. Optional Kerberos-based authentication. DNS-based naming and other network information. Features include: Central location for network administration and security. Information security and single sign-on for user access to networked resource. The ability to scale up or down easily. Standardizing access to application data. Synchronization of directory updates across servers. Functions: Active Directory stores all information and settings for a deployment in a central database. Active Directory allows administrators to assign policies, deploy and update software Active Directory networks can vary from a small installation with a few computers, users and printers to tens of thousands of users, many different network domains and large server farms spanning many geographical locations.
Structure: An Active Directory structure is a hierarchical arrangement of information about objects. The objects fall into two broad categories: resources (e.g., printers) and security principals (user or computer accounts and groups). Security principals are assigned unique security identifiers (SIDs). Each object represents a single entity whether a user, a computer, a printer, or a group and its attributes. Certain objects can contain other objects. Forests, trees, and domains: The Active Directory framework that holds the objects can be viewed at a number of levels. The forest, tree, and domain are the logical divisions in an Active Directory network. Within a deployment, objects are grouped into domains. The objects for a single domain are stored in a single database (which can be replicated). Domains are identified by their DNS name structure, the namespace. Tree- A tree is a collection of one or more domains and domain trees in a contiguous namespace, linked in a transitive trust hierarchy. Forest- At the top of the structure is the forest. A forest is a collection of trees that share a common global catalogue, directory schema, logical structure, and directory configuration. The forest represents the security boundary within which users, computers, groups, and other objects are accessible.
Considerations when installing a new Windows Server 2008 forest When you install AD to create the first domain controller in a new Windows Server 2008 forest, you must keep the following considerations in mind: You must make forest and domain functional level decisions that determine whether your forest and domain can contain domain controllers that run Windows 2000 Server, Windows Server 2003, or both. To read more about forest and domain functional levels please refer to the links below. Domain controllers running the Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 operating system are NOT supported with Windows Server Servers running Windows NT Server 4.0 are NOT supported by domain controllers that are running Windows Server 2008, meaning you MUST have additional DCs running Windows 2000/2003 to support older NT 4.0 servers. The first Windows Server 2008 domain controller in a forest must be a global catalogue server and it cannot be an RODC.
Part 1 Server Manager/Initial Configuration Tasks Roles can and should be added from Server Manager (but they can also be initiated from the Initial Configuration Tasks wizard that auto-opens the first time you log on to the server). 1. 31 14. Choose the name for your forest root domain on the following window. Click Next after choosing your fully qualified domain name. the wizard will check if that forest name is already in used:
15. After a few seconds, the wizard will ask you to enter the NetBIOS name: the default NetBIOS name should be fine.
16. Click on the Next tab. on the following screen, choose the forest functional level. Choose Windows Server 2008 it ensures that any new domains created in this forest will automatically operate at the Windows Server 2008 domain functional level, which does provide unique features. Click on Next. 17. Clicking next, the dcpromo wizard will check for DNS configurations. If DNS is not installed on your system, choose the DNS Server option on the following screen. here you get the info that tells you:
18. Click on Next. If your server does have static IP address assigned on the server, you might get the following warning: as you can see, having dynamic assigned IP address is not recommended. Use static IP addresses for servers whenever is possible. Choose your option, and click Next. 41 Ex No 4.Installation of DHCP Introduction to DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a core infrastructure service on any network that provides IP addressing and DNS server information to PC clients and any other device. DHCP is used so that you do not have to statically assign IP addresses to every device on your network and manage the issues that static IP addressing can create. Installing Windows Server 2008 DCHP Server is easy. DHCP Server is now a role of Windows Server 2008 not a windows component as it was in the past. To do this, you will need a Windows Server 2008 system already installed and configured with a static IP address. You will need to know your network s IP address range, the range of IP addresses you will want to hand out to your PC clients, your DNS server IP addresses, and your default gateway. Additionally, you will want to have a plan for all subnets involved, what scopes you will want to define, and what exclusions you will want to create.
Procedure to install DHCP on Windows Server To start the DHCP installation process, you can click Add Roles from the Initial Configuration Tasks window or from Server Manager à Roles à Add Roles. 2. When the Add Roles Wizard comes up, you can click Next on that screen. Next, select that you want to add the DHCP Server Role, and click Next.
3. If we do not have a static IP address assigned on your server, we will get a warning that you should not install DHCP with a dynamic IP address. We will be prompted for IP network information, scope information, and DNS information. If you only want to install DHCP server with no configured scopes or settings, you can just click Next through these questions and proceed with the installation. 4. In this case, we chose to take this opportunity to configure some basic IP settings and configure my first DHCP Scope. We were shown the network connection binding and asked to verify it, like this: Figure 3: Network connection binding What the wizard is asking is, what interface do you want to provide DHCP services on? we took the default and clicked Next.
5. Next, we entered my Parent Domain, Primary DNS Server, and Alternate DNS Server (as you see below) and clicked Next. We opted NOT to use WINS on the network and clicked Next. 6. Then, we are promoted to configure a DHCP scope for the new DHCP Server. We have opted to configure an IP address range of to cover the 25+ PC Clients on my local network. To do this, we clicked Add to add a new scope. As you see below, we named the Scope WBC- Local, configured the starting and ending IP addresses of , subnet mask of , default gateway of , type of subnet (wired), and activated the scope.
7. In the Add Scope screen, we clicked Next to add the new scope (once the DHCP Server is installed). 8. We chose to disable DHCPv6 stateless mode for this server and clicked Next. Then, we confirmed the DHCP Installation Selections (on the screen below) and click Install.
9. After only a few seconds, the DHCP Server is installed as shown below:
Managing DHCP on Windows Server Like the installation, managing Windows Server 2008 DHCP Server is also easy. Back in my Windows Server 2008 Server Manager, under Roles, we clicked on the new DHCP Server entry. While we cannot manage the DHCP Server scopes and clients from here, what we can do is to manage what events, services, and resources are related to the DHCP Server installation. Thus, this is a good place to go to check the status of the DHCP Server and what events have happened around it. 2. However, to really configure the DHCP Server and see what clients have obtained IP addresses, we need to go to the DHCP Server MMC. To do this, we went to Start à Administrative Tools à DHCP Server, like this:
3. When expanded out, the MMC offers a lot of features. Here is what it looks like:
The DHCP Server MMC offers IPv4 & IPv6 DHCP Server info including all scopes, pools, leases, reservations, scope options, and server options. 4. If we go into the address pool and the scope options, we can see that the configuration we made when we installed the DHCP Server did, indeed, work. The scope IP address range is there, and so is the DNS Server & default gateway.
Testing Windows Server 2008 DHCP Server 1. To test this, we have a Windows Vista PC Client on the same network segment as the Windows Server 2008 DHCP server. To be safe, we have no other devices on this network segment. We do an IPCONFIG /RELEASE then an IPCONFIG /RENEW and verify that we received an IP address from the new DHCP server, as you can see below: 2. Also, we went to Windows 2008 Server and verified that the new Vista client was listed as a client on the DHCP server. This did indeed check out, as you can see below:
Result- DHCP was successfully configured and tested on Windows Server 2008.
