Contact Information: Ms. Ariel Lewis E-mail: alewis@miamiartscharter.net Room: 111D English III Honors Miami Arts Charter School Ms. Lewis 2014-2015 Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide grade 11 students, using texts of high complexity, integrated language arts study in reading, writing, speaking, listening and language for college and career preparation and readiness. Textbook: McDougal Littell Literature: Grade 11 (ISBN-10: 0-395-93181-9) Reading List: The Crucible by Arthur Miller* The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams *Students will be provided copies of The Crucible, which appears in the course textbook. Other texts will have to be acquired by purchasing or borrowing from a library. Students may purchase hard copies or electronic copies (to be read on laptops or e-readers/tablets). Under no circumstances will students be allowed to read course literature from cell phones. Classroom Expectations: What you can expect from me: I believe in holding students to clear, high standards. I practice honest communication with students in regards to their academic and personal performance. In my class you will be challenged to work hard and with discipline. 1

I also aim to be generous with my time and encouragement. If you need help, please tell me. If you have a question, please ask. You will not be bothering me. The best way for me to know what you need is for you to tell me. What I will expect from you: Show up to class on time. Respect the room/school and the people in it. Participate actively. You should be speaking every day in class. Be present. Keep cell phones off and put away. Ask permission to use other electronics. Honor Code: The honor code, which is attached at the end of the syllabus, ensures that all students have an equal opportunity to learn and master the material. Cheating of any kind is strictly prohibited. Students found cheating will receive a zero for the assignment, will not be allowed to make up the assignment, and will receive a referral. Homework Policy: Students will not be given busy work to complete at home. However, they may be asked to complete assignments at home if they are not completed in class. This includes reading, writing assignments, and projects. Students are expected to have assignments completed and ready to turn in by the due date. Students will be given ample notice if an assignment needs to be typed and printed. Absences, Tardies, and Make-Up Work: Students are expected to come to school every day and be on time to class. Students who are late will be marked tardy in the gradebook. If a student is tardy or absent three times, parents will be notified of the infraction. If a student is tardy or absent five times, he or she will be referred to the administration. If a student is absent, it is his or her responsibility to bring a note of excuse to the front office. Students with excused absences will have the opportunity to submit missed assignments in a timely fashion. Students must ask for the missed work on the day of their return to class and will be given three school days to complete and hand in assignments missed due to absence. Website: The class website is the best way to keep track of upcoming assignments as they are posted. Major assignments will be listed with instructions online, while smaller assignments will be announced and posted in the classroom. You can and should sign up for the course e-mail list by visiting www.miamiartscharter.net. 2

Discipline: Students are expected to follow the Miami-Dade County Code of Student Conduct at all times on campus and at school-related events. The student code of conduct can be found at: http:://ehandbooks.dadeschools.net/policies/90/index.htm The following steps will be taken upon infraction: 1. Verbal warning in class 2. Student/teacher conference outside of the classroom 3. Parent/guardian e-mail or phone call 4. Parent meeting and office referral Late or missing work will be treated as a classroom discipline issue and parents will be notified. Course Supplies: For this semester, students are required to have: 1 single-subject college-ruled notebook a two-pocket folder or equivalent for collecting course handouts pens and/or pencils copies of course literature not provided in class (see reading list) access to a computer with word processing and the internet During the semester we will use a number of other supplies in our day to day activities.
