1 Digital Photography Class Syllabus Contact #: or Room: D Office Hours: By appointment Course Description: This course is designed for students interested in fine art photography. The content of the course will allow students an opportunity to learn basic to intermediate photography skills, digital/ manual camera operation, and graphic editing software. This course includes basic photography concepts, techniques and hands-on-training. The focus for this course is photography as an art form and for vehicles of self expression. Objectives/ Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students should Understand the a Digital SLR camera Know how to use Adobe Photoshop software (photo editing software) Know how to use studio lighting equipment. Know how to critique and talk about one s own artwork. Develop their writing ability, computer skills and creativity pertaining to various projects Be able to create a body of work, create a portfolio, and successfully exhibit their work. Class Materials: An account: **Must be a gmail account Notebook/ Composition book to take notes. Flash drive: a 4GB or higher memory or External Hard Drive Black/Blue pens or pencils Digital Camera (optional but highly recommended) Headphones/ Earphones (Required) Daily Procedures: Be on time. As per school policy, three (3) tardy marks are equal to one (1) absence. Attendance will be strictly taken every day of class. Read agenda on the Projector Screen Read Goals and Objectives on Sony TV Clean your work area/ put away keyboards. Clean and tidy Classroom Check the MHS Website everyday Tardy Procedures: 3 Tardies equals 1 Absence. Ask your fellow student for missed instructions/projects etc. before asking the teacher. After 3 Tardies, you will pickup trash outside and around Bulding D If you are 40 minutes late, you are considered absent. Restroom Procedures: Ask before using the restroom. 1 person at time when using the restroom. There is limited time for class work, use it wisely! GO TO RESTROOM BEFORE OR AFTER CLASS!! Writing: Each student should have a journal or log book for the class. The logbook will be turned in/ looked at during midterm and end of each quarter for grading and to evaluate the student s writing skills and ideas. Basic Camera Operation Skills: Students will learn a variety of techniques and know the operation/ functions of a digital SLR camera.
2 Basic Photo Editing Skills: Students will learn the basics of Adobe Photoshop. Each student should know the variety of tools within the software to create, manipulate and edit their photos or images that will be used in their photo projects and critiques. Assignments: Students will be expected to cover student activities both on and off campus. Assignments will be graded on completion of the assignment(s). Quiz: Handouts will be given out to students in preparation for the CAMERA OPERATION/ FUNCTION QUIZ. Please study for your quiz as they will test you on skills needed to OPERATE/ BORROW AND USE A DIGITAL SLR CAMERA. Individual Projects: Projects will be assigned throughout the quarter. They will be graded on rubrics such as completion, creativity, effort, critique, body of work and overall presentation. Since ample time will be given to complete your projects, no late assignments will be accepted. Final Exams: These will be given according to the MHS final exam schedule. Final exams will be your final photo project portfolio and end of year photo exhibit. Class Participation: Students are expected to attend every class on time. Students are also expected to be respectful, helpful, and participate in class activities. You will receive a grade for your overall class participation. Grading Scale: 93%100%= A 83%-92%= B 73%-82%=C 63%-72%=D 0-62%=F Evaluation: 1. Critique: % a. Written ideas and notes in laptop/ journal/ Log Book 2. Short Projects % a. In class exercises, assignments, etc. b. 1 to 3 day projects 3. Class Participation: % a. Discussion & Participation 4. Projects: % a.
