The MS and MSE degree prgrams prepare engineers fr dctral study r industrial psitins that specialize in research, prject management and prduct innvatin. The dctral prgram emphasizes riginal research and prvides students with a strng backgrund fr emplyment by academic institutins, gvernment labratries and industrial research labratries. The Schl ffers a brad based curriculum in design, systems and cntrl; fluid mechanics science and engineering; mechanics and dynamics f slids; and transprt phenmena, thermdynamics, and energy. 2.a. Admissin Requirements A minimum grade pint average f 3.0 (n a 4.0 scale) is required fr graduates f accredited United States institutins. All applicants are required t take the general Graduate Recrd Examinatin (GRE); a subject specific GRE is nt required. Students wh d nt have English as their primary language are required t achieve minimum cmpetencies. Financial Supprt Plicy The Schl will allcate a limited number f graduate assistantships each year. The fllwing guidelines will be used t determine the recipients f this supprt. i) All financial supprt will be based n merit. Criteria used t determine merit will be the applicant's GPA, GRE scres, TOEFL scre (if applicable), letters f recmmendatin and Statement f Purpse. assistantship, applicants shuld cntact faculty members listed as mechanical r aerspace engineering graduate faculty, as research assistantships are decided by individual faculty members. ii) The decisin as t whm will receive Schl financial supprt (i.e., frm the general Schl fund) will be determined by the Schl s service needs (e.g., teaching assistants). All graduate students n Schl supprt will be assigned apprpriate teaching related duties. Internatinal students must pass the SPEAK test with a minimum scre f 55 t be eligible fr Schl teaching assistantships. iii) The decisin as t whm will receive supprt frm research grants and cntracts in the frm f a Research Assistant (RA) psitin will reside with the principal investigatr frm whse funds the student will be paid. Students may cntact individual faculty t see what pprtunities may exist. iv) Students making satisfactry academic and prgram prgress (see Sectin 6), subject t the availability f funds, are eligible t receive a maximum f three semesters f Schl supprt (a teaching assistantship) as MS/MSE candidates and five semesters f Schl supprt as PhD candidates. Students n academic prbatin r new prvisinally admitted students are nt eligible fr Schl supprt. v) Students receiving financial aid must register fr 12 hurs f credit each semester in ttal; these hurs may include research and dissertatin credits. These students must als register fr MAE 594 Graduate Research Cnference. Nte that an audited curse des nt cunt tward the 12 hurs and requires a petitin t the Schl. If a student n a TA/RA psitin falls belw 12 credit hurs during the semester, the Schl has the right t revke the TA/RA psitin and benefits. The 12 credit hur registratin requirement is nly fr the fall/spring. Students receiving a TA/RA psitin in the summer sessins must be enrlled in at least ne credit hur. 4. Graduate Prgrams 4.a. Graduate Curses Graduate curse fferings in the Schl cver the classical areas, including aerdynamics and fluid mechanics, design and manufacturing, heat transfer and thermdynamics, slid mechanics and dynamics, and system dynamics and cntrl as well as interdisciplinary tpics in micr and nantechnlgy and sustainability. A list f current curse fferings in these areas is given in Appendix A. Students must als satisfy a mathematics requirement. Curses that may be used t satisfy this requirement are als listed in Appendix A. Audited curses d nt apply tward the degree prgram and cannt be listed n the ipos. In general SEMTE graduate students are nt granted permissin t audit a curse until the student has filed a Plan f Study (ipos) and has cmpleted all cursewrk n the ipos. 4.b. Dctr f Philsphy (PhD) The Dctr f Philsphy (PhD) degree is directed tward riginal research. The student is required t write and defend a dissertatin that describes an riginal cntributin within the chsen discipline. The research results shuld be suitable fr publicatin in a reputable, schlarly jurnal. The Schl currently ffers majrs in Aerspace Engineering, Aerspace Engineering (Engineering Educatin), Mechanical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering (Engineering Educatin). 4
4.b.1 Selectin f a PhD Advisr The student must select a prgram cmmittee chair (faculty advisr) with the selectin being made prir t cmpleting 42 credit hurs. The prgram cmmittee chair s name must be filed with the Schl s graduate prgrams ffice thrugh the Plan f Study (ipos) accessed thrugh the MyASU prtal. A change f prgram cmmittee chair requires apprval f the Graduate Prgram Chair. 4.b.2 PhD Qualifying Criteria A graduate student pursuing a PhD prgram f study in Mechanical Engineering, must cmplete within the first year f his/her graduate studies at ASU, three (3) 500 level (preferably cre) curses in the majr area and ne (1) 500 level mathematics curse with an average GPA f 3.25 r abve. The PC chair, in cnsultatin with the student, will establish a PC, the purpses f which are t: 1) Apprve the plan f study (ipos). 2) Prvide guidance fr the student's research. 3) Administer the cmprehensive examinatin. 4) Administer the dissertatin defense. The PC shall cnsist f at least five ASU faculty members with the majrity being frm the Mechanical r Aerspace Engineering Graduate Faculty, but at least ne being frm utside the Mechanical r Aerspace Engineering Graduate Faculty. 4.b.4 PhD Plan f Study (ipos) The student in cnsultatin with his/her PC chair and the PC must file a POS prir t cmpleting 42 credit hurs. The POS must meet general University requirements including the need fr rigrus fundamental knwledge f engineering principles. Candidates fr the PhD degree must cmplete a minimum f 84 semester hurs f curse and dissertatin wrk distributed belw. Thirty (30) credit hurs f apprpriate cursewrk frm a previusly earned master s degree may be applied tward the ttal credit hurs; at least fifty fur (54) hurs must be taken at Arizna State University. A minimum cumulative grade pint average f 3.25 is required. At least eighteen (18) credit hurs f cursewrk directly related t the research area (majr) At least nine (9) credit hurs f mathematics At least nine (9) credit hurs f graduate curses utside the majr research area; these must be restricted t mathematics, engineering and/r science Twelve (12) hurs f MAE 799 dissertatin MAE 792 research credit hurs may be applied tward the 84 ttal hurs Nte: The PC and the Graduate Prgram Chair must apprve any changes t the POS. The examinatin will be administered by the PC. The student must prepare a written dissertatin prspectus, and submit that t the PC in advance f the examinatin. The prspectus is cnsidered as the written cmpnent f the cmprehensive exam. During the examinatin, the student will rally defend the prspectus t the PC and answer questins related t it, as well as n general principles related t the student s field f study. This is cnsidered as bth the ral cmpnent f the cmprehensive exam, and as the dctral dissertatin prspectus defense. It is the student s respnsibility t bring the required frms (Reprt f Dctral Cmprehensive Exams and Results f Dctral Dissertatin Prpsal/Prspectus) t the defense and then t the graduate advisr fr Schl prcessing. Qualified PhD students shuld take the examinatin by their sixth semester as full time students in the Mechanical r Aerspace Engineering PhD prgram. The Engineering Educatin cncentratin cmbines research in engineering with research in educatin. The research results shuld be suitable fr publicatin in a peer reviewed jurnal. The PhD dissertatin cmmittee must include at least tw (2) members frm educatin related disciplines. Designatin f ne f these tw members as the dissertatin c chair is encuraged but nt required. Students will be required t satisfy all MAE qualifying and cmprehensive requirements and t abide by all plicies set frth by the Schl fr Engineering f Matter, Transprt, and Energy. Nte that the Engineering Educatin cncentratin, in effect, requires six (6) credit hurs f cursewrk beynd the minimum required fr a PhD in mechanical r aerspace engineering with n cncentratin. Students wishing t pursue the Engineering Educatin cncentratin must apply directly t that cncentratin and are nt able t submit a plan change; if a student is admitted int this cncentratin and wishes t pursue a general Mechanical r Aerspace engineering degree, s/he will have t reapply t the general PhD prgram. 4.b.7 PhD Candidacy PhD students achieve candidacy status in a letter frm the Graduate Cllege Dean upn passing the cmprehensive examinatin and successfully defending the dissertatin prspectus with an apprved ipos n file. This is sent directly frm the Graduate Cllege and is fund in the MyASU system. 4.b.8 PhD Final Oral Examinatin The dissertatin defense is an ral and public examinatin administered by the PC in accrdance with Graduate Cllege guidelines. The purpse f the examinatin is t evaluate the student's research effrts and written presentatin (dissertatin), and t determine if the candidate is wrthy f receiving a PhD degree. The majr area f emphasis f this examinatin is the student's research dissertatin and the general areas f study related theret. The final dissertatin defense must be taken within five years f passing the cmprehensive examinatin. It is the student s respnsibility t adhere t and be familiar with the deadlines set frth by the Graduate Cllege regarding defenses. Students must be registered in at least ne credit hur at the time f their defense. 4.c. Masters in Passing (MIP) Students wh are enrlled in the Mechanical r Aerspace Engineering PhD prgram and wh d nt have a previusly earned MS r MSE degree may apply fr a Masters in Passing (MIP) upn cmpletin f 30 hurs f apprpriate graduate cursewrk. The MIP requires a separate ipos frm the PhD and all 8

Graduate Student Advising Fr initial advising, incming students will reprt t the Graduate Prgram Chair wh may arrange fr a temprary advisr based n the student's stated area f interest. The initial faculty advisr shuld be cnsidered temprary until such time as a permanent PC chair is designated. If a particular faculty member n a research grant r cntract is directly supprting an incming student, that faculty persn 9
will be the PC chair. The graduate advisr can assist with the prcess twards cmpleting the degree, nt academic cntent (i.e. registratin, ipos questins). 8. Admissin t PhD Prgram Withut MS r MSE A highly qualified graduate student may be permitted t bypass the MS r MSE and prceed directly t the PhD prgram prir t cmpleting 12 credit hurs f graduate level cursewrk. Students may als apply directly t the PhD prgram withut an MS r MSE degree. A student may change t the PhD prgram after cmpleting 12 credit hurs, but nly 12 credit hurs frm the master s cursewrk cmpleted at Arizna State University may cunt twards the PhD. The Graduate Affairs Cmmittee (GAC) will cnsider a request fr an MSE r MS student t change t the PhD prgram after receiving the fllwing: A letter f intent frm the student.
