4 Explore your options in civil engineering As a civil engineer you have a VIP ticket to all of the town s hot spots. Sky Tower, Harbour Bridge, Britomart without civil engineers they wouldn t exist. In fact, civil engineers are involved in all big infrastructure projects, such as motorways, airports, harbours, dams, bridges and tunnels. They also help us deal with pollution, traffic congestion and other environmental problems. And with many major new infrastructure projects currently being planned, New Zealand alone will need thousands of new civil engineering and land surveying graduates over the next 10 years. Unitec has trained many civil engineers and land surveyors. They re now in senior roles in New Zealand or across the globe. With our help you can get there, too. soil, material and fluid engineering labs, working with the latest Computer Aided Design (CAD) programmes, and using numerical modelling and project management software. But most of all you ll spend a lot of time with our civil engineering and land surveying staff, who are experts in all areas of civil engineering. Many of them are Chartered Professional Engineers (CPEng), members of IPENZ (Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand) or members of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors and Licensed Cadastral Surveyors. A significant number of our part-time lecturers are working in the industry bringing current best practice to our real-world curriculum. And all of them want to share their vast expertise with you. Study at the Department of Civil Engineering and you ll spend many hours in fieldwork exercises. You could be land surveying with the latest Global Positioning Systems (GPS) equipment, or on field trips to real infrastructure projects like motorways, bridges, tunnels and subdivisions. You ll be in our Our contact list reads like a who s who in civil engineering. IPENZ, the New Zealand Contractors Federation, the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors and InfraTrain are all there. 7 Anneliese Sabrowski Network Engineer, Auckland Motorway Alliance New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Civil) graduate Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil) graduate Master of Engineering Studies (Transportation) graduate, University of Auckland I ve always had an interest in architecture and took physics, science and calculus at college. The careers department suggested civil engineering as I wanted a career with lots of job opportunities and variety. Civil engineering appeared to tick all the boxes. My study was an awesome combination of practical and academic skills. Doing the diploma first gave me a really good grounding to build on and eased me into the subject. I love the variety of my work it s a fantastic mix of office and site work. Since graduating from Unitec I ve completed a graduate rotation programme, which involved spending a year working at a contracting firm, the council and as a consultant. I ve also gone on to complete a Master of Engineering Studies (Transportation) at The University of Auckland, and completed a Transpower Neighbourhood Engineer project with a student from Rosehill Special School, which was really rewarding and enjoyable.

Amy O Donnell Site Engineer, Fulton Hogan Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil) graduate I ve always been a practical person. I like building things and figuring out how they work. Now I build structures like bridges, retaining walls and motorway interchanges. It s really versatile - some days I m on site all day and others I m in the office. I wasn t expecting to move up the company so quickly. I even got a company car which I didn t expect in my first year out of uni! The degree programme at Unitec is very practical with lots of site visits and projects that are based on real-life construction work. This really helped to make sense of what we learnt in the classroom, and helped me realise it s what I want to do. I m really proud of my IPENZ Award for graduating top of my class, and the Hynds Engineering Award I got at the end of my studies. I finished my first job last year, which was a huge achievement for me. It s so rewarding to see the end product and think oh yeah, I built that.

And construction managers, site supervisors, quantity surveyors, property developers and architectural technicians are all key pieces of the puzzle. Without their contribution a project may not make it past the planning stage, let alone become a completed building. Want to work in construction? We can help you get started. Our construction programmes have been given the seal of approval by key industry organisations. The Bachelor of Construction (Construction Economics) is recognised by the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors and the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors. The Bachelor of Construction (Construction Management) is accredited by the New Zealand Institute of Building, and the Bachelor of Construction (Property Development) by the Property Institute of New Zealand. But no matter what you study, all our programmes focus on ensuring the construction industry is governed by best practice from construction management to property development. We know all the big players in construction - such as Fletcher, Hawkins Construction, Kalmar, Jasmax, Stephenson & Turner, Beca, Davis Langdon, NZStrong, Aspec, Rider Bucknell Levett and Arrow International. You ll get to know them too, as many leading companies stop by for a visit. There may be holiday work up for grabs, perhaps a scholarship or even permanent employment after you graduate. Some of our students also team up with a senior construction management or quantity surveying practitioner for a year, thanks to our mentoring scheme with the New Zealand Institute of Building and the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveying. Each year, the New Zealand Institute of Building also sponsors a number of student awards. And thanks to our strong links with Autodesk, you can explore how Autodesk software can be applied in building information modelling.

13 Tracey Wong Too Architectural Technician, CADViz Limited, Auckland National Diploma in Architectural Technology graduate I like the varied work, as each job is unique. I love the office atmosphere we have at CADViz, as the people are very supportive of questions. I was also fortunate enough to have the opportunity to learn a new CAD program on the job. It adds to my skill set and keeps things interesting. My Unitec qualification is very significant for my current role it has laid the foundation to further my learning and knowledge in my current job. It was encouraging that I was considered a person rather than just a student number. I also thoroughly enjoyed the paper History of Design. I was fond of learning about architects like Mies van der Rohe and their past works. I liked how his interpretation of architectural design has had an impact on today s infatuation with clean lines, free-flowing open spaces and raw industrial steel and glass. Learning about these artists and how their ideas have impacted the built environment really interested me.

14 Tonchi Glamuzina Site Manager, Fletcher Construction National Diploma in Construction Management graduate National Diploma in Quantity Surveying graduate I ve always been intrigued by the built environment and I aspired to manage large commercial construction projects. I started as a carpenter to get the practical building knowledge and then moved onto the diploma to get the management knowledge. My qualifications opened up employment opportunities and helped me get to where I am now. I ve worked on lots of exciting buildings including the iconic University of Auckland Business School and buildings within the historic Mt Eden Prison. The detail, planning and execution of the buildings can be very challenging and exciting and I use the theoretical knowledge I learnt at Unitec every day. I m particularly proud of managing the ASB North Wharf building site. It was a very technical and challenging build, and I m proud to have left my mark on Auckland. The next step for me is to progress into project management of large commercial projects.

Study options Autodesk Training 27 Autodesk Training Centre Professional development courses We re part of the worldwide Autodesk Authorised Training Centre network, and currently offer training in two Autodesk products: AutoCAD: the leading 2D computer-aided design package that has been the industry standard for the last two decades. Revit Architecture: state-of-the-art 3D software used by most of the larger architecture practices around the world. The courses listed below are delivered as intensive three-week blocks (from 6pm to 9pm two nights per week) throughout the year. Programme fees for 2014 have not yet been set and Unitec is currently reviewing them in the context of the Ministry of Education s fees maxima policy.
